Sony DVD+R 8x Made in Japan code as Taiyo Yuden (YUDEN000 T02) and as Garmoon said, arguably some of the Best DVD+Rs ever made by anyone. No big deal at all. I am sure the Sony 16x Made in Taiwan play just fine. But quality speaking, they are not like the TY made.
Ask DocTY~ AKA Kivory666. He is our resident Expert on Taiyo Yuden made DVD Media. If those Sony DVD+R MIJ 8x don't play in your player, there has to be a reason other than the media, unless you got a bad batch. Which I never have. Not yet.
If booktyped to DVD-ROM, those should play perfect on your player.
Of course, they should not be burned above 8x, depending on your burner & firmware. Anyway, to each his own. Use what works best for you.
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

@catfreak
My bad about about MIJ Maxell +RWs. Of course they were made in Taiwan.
But the sale at Office Depot in Baton Rouge was for 16X Maxell +R and -Rs DVDs. Buy one get one free. Nothing but Taiwanese made.The sale was last Sunday thru today Saturday(23rd). Yeah the RWs were $7.99 for 15 pack. Be curious to see if sale is same this week. All sales seem to be be same here week in and week out at BB, OD, CC, CompUSA(we don't have Staples) as rest of USA sales.

@basquiat,
You have the good stuff there! Verbs are going to be good, period. You would probably be okay at 16x, but personally I don't go above 8x. Most of the time, I stay with 4x. However a couple of members say to always burn at max speed in order to keep the laser beams and motor in the drive operating smoothly. I've never heard of that except here on AD. The best advice, do what makes you comfortable and gives you a quality burn.
edit: As for the smell, it's a combination of the plastic, dyes, and lacquer in the discs, and the plastic case they came in.

And the catfreak speaks !
He's right alright ! & From what I understand the Singapore Verbatims Are all DVD+R Dl's now Or atlaest DL's I'm not sure if Verbatim makes or is going to make DVD-R DL but The singapore plant is supposedly only Cranking out DL Media ! Not that you might not find some SL ( Single Layer ) Singapore Made Verbatims but They'll be old stock! Points to ponder ! Ciao!

Just got back from Staples. I really didnt need anymore DVD's, but I looked on the sales table and they had 50 pack Sony 1x-16x DVD-R's for $14.98. There were about 12 left and I looked through and found 2-50 packs that have the octagon spacer. I bought those two. I just used NeroInfoTool and they code out as TYG03. I dont have a camera here, but my sister has one. If you want me to take a picture I will.

rcm999- Yeah !
With samsclub I think their media selection varies with the location ! Here in Louisiana The 100ct. spindles are verbatims , 75Ct. spindles maxell & The Sony 50/25 Double pack . I have seen Fuji's on occasion but only MIT's The old Blue label and the new grey shrinkwrapped ones ! & Sams prices tend to run slightly higher than The Big retailers Sale prices but Lower than their non- sale prices ! Though the prices can fluctuate if somebody throws a really big sale ! Have a Good" un Ciao!

Haven't tried any Houston area Best Buy's lately (I go to 3 of them) however a Walgreens I visited had 3 Sony -R's & 2 +R Sony's. All 50 packs of 16x media. First thing I did was to check all 5 for that octagonal spacer. Found one in -R (Yipee!!) & you bet I bought it. So check other stores where Sony DVDR's can be found. You never know where some MIJ TY's might show up!!

I've still got 50 of the MCC004 verbs left to burn up yet. Won't be in the market for a couple of weeks yet, but the sales certainly are worth looking at.
Hi to all my friends. Been so busy this summer, haven't had a chance to spend any time here. Hopefully it will slow down soon. Cheers all.

If the sony 8X MIJ +Rs have white octagonal spacer then they a TY T02s. Not so for 16X +Rs media. Some -R 16X Sony media are TYs.

@pahick-
Just hit ALT-PRINTSCREEN to do a screen capture of the Neor Infotool and hit CTRL-V to paste it into your favorite editing program. However, I've seen the quality scans of TYG03 and know they are ***sweeeeeet!***
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

That comes out to 46 cents a piece. I buy TY online for 32 cents a piece delivered, and my last batch came out to less than 30 because it was on sale. No tax or gas either.

I've purchased lots and lots of Sony/Yuden DVDs from WalMart because at times, they are the only vender that has the MIJ Sony discs . . But, as Dunker pointed out, 46¢ each is too much to pay for them . . I wait until my wife needs to make a WalMart trip and I get a local ad . . . WalMart will price match . . plus, if my wife is shopping, I can get her to pay for them . . last time I had her purchase discs was 2 months ago and they cost $12.50/50 . .
And . . if you shop at a 'brick and mortar' store there is no such thing as a RMA
Just my 87¾¢ worth . . .

Hi.... First Post. Have not lurked long but have learned alot about media from you guys. I recently started burning DVDs and thanks to your posts I purchased 3 50 packs of the Sonys with the octagon stopper before I even knew what they were. I have been to every best buy and circuit city in Louisville KY last week looking for the octagon spacer with no luck. Thanks to pahick posting about the 50 packs at staples I went back to the site of my original purchase and dug thru everything on the shelf and came up with 6 packs -R X16 with the white octagon spacer Made In Japan. Thanks to all for the great posts!
