hello saugmon,
i'm sorry to bother you again but i promise i wont bother you in a while.
hows the ripping ability of the 1620s?? i knew the 1650s doesnt do well against the scratch cd and stuff. are they about the same level??
so buying a used plexy 716 from ebay is not that bad right??

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

That should be a pretty good burner. I've heard of some of their owners having to crossflash them to the ligitimate Benq 1640's firmware to get top performance from them.
Benq being bought by lite-on,Plextor going with the majority of rebadges-What's the world coming to?
I checked newegg.com and not a single Benq dvd burner drive, UGGH!
All my benqs are pretty decent rippers,especially my 1640 that's in a single drive 598 mhz pc. The gf's kids use that pc to play all my cartoon backups. They do have trouble ripping scratched dvds,but I've seen them rip some very nasty -scratched discs,meanwhile another disc with 1 scratch won't rip.

My second Plextor I bought from eBay and have no problems with.My first Plextor external 716 I bought new was like $249.00 and thats still going strong. My Benq 1620 didn't fare as weell but my 1650's are workhorses and really inexpensive I only use the good media but they have their own tastes for media as far as Quality scans for what there worth.My Lite ons are ok except 2 of them have been RMA to Newegg in the last year and the Samsung was cheap and a waste of money IMOH. went to bestbuy over the weekend and couldnt find 1 cake box of the sonys's +/-r's that were MIJS...that sucks so i bought the wife a ipod..lolgo in for some dvd blanks and get a ipod...lol
as far as drives.. i love my new lite-on SHW-160P6S....with my 8x+r hub printable verbs i havent had 1 bad disc or a bad scan with them

hello dunker,
that burner is fantastic however you do have to be very careful on the rebate forms, make sure yhou fill out everything and stuff.
these rebate are kinda difficulte to get from tiger direct and might take forever.

Bestbuy: All their sony were MIT and a label covering the top and they had tons of them.
Kmart: Had some 25 pks of +1x-8x MIJ sony,but round/white foam spacer,Fuji all MIT
Staple's: MIT on all their sony-labels covering the spacers on most of them.
Walmart: Full hub/White inkjet printable Hitachi Maxells-25 pk for $13.
No High quality media bargains,but got majority of my christmas shopping done!!!!

Thanx for the Birthday Wishes -No tequila unfortunately ! but a Nice Dinner @ Olive Garden ! Is it just me or have DVD burners in general gone up a lot lately ? I realise that A. ( I'm Cheap !!!) & B. (It's almost Xmas) But sheesh! On Benq Burners ! They seem to have become like Gearge Carlin's Mythical Blue food ! ( Why is there no Blue food ?) Rare & exotic and impossible to find ! Except for the Benq 1670 ( which does'nt have all the Benq Goodies ) Perhaps it would be worth it to start a Rebadge Benq Page Crossrefferencing Other brands of DVD burner that are Benqs unde the skin? I don't think I would've paid the full retail on the plexy either Even though they're great Burners ! Would probably have went with a nice Benq & a good supply of media ( If they were available ? Oh well !Polaroid 5 MP Digital Camera with 2.4 LCD - I532 $149.99 @ TARGET if you still are looking !Even though I use the BeJabbers out of My Little VIVITAR digital camera ! I think I will Probably Break out the Old Canon Ae-1 Film is more expensive than reusable SD cards I know & film processing cost too ! But Digital cameras atleast the fairly inexpensive point and shoot kind ( NON - SLR ) seem to fall down in action shots & during Low Light Photos ! I'm not Knocking them ! I understand that there are DIGITAL SLR's Too but I already have the Canon AE1 . Anyhow ! I hope everyone get's all the TECHN0 -Goodies & Non Tech Presents they want for Xmas - As well as Whirled Peas! OOPS ! I mean World Peace ! CIAO!

well, i kinda like to disagree with you a little bit.
the dvd burner price have come down a little compare to like
last year. only price have gone up is the benq and its because
they are not selling them. you can still get a quality burner like liteon, nec and pioneer under 40 bucks. last year around this time the benq 1640 were selling at that price in newegg.

Yujenh- Well then maybe it's just Me then ( Cheapskate !!!!! I said it firat LOL!) Anyhow I agree with your right to disagree ! You Can still get a BENQ Reasonably Priced but It would be the 1670 which does'nt do all the QSuite goodies Thought It does Do DVD -Ram & Booktyping I think !Any other Benq'a will either be Rebadged or out of stock OR extermely overpriced ! I've got a BESTBUY giftcard coming for Xmas from my son in law so we'll see what's available after ! Will probably put it towards more Memory for the laptop & some Verbatims or sony's if I can find some MIJ's preferablY ! But you never know ! ya! know !!! Happy Hunting ( Bargains) & Merry Xmas!

There and Rite Aid and CVS I always look in the back of the shelf since they don't rotate them shelves. I'm waiting on Walgreens that have some 10 pack full hub printables to put them on sale theres 5 packs that have been hanging there for the last three months.As BIGTOXY69 said check em all our big Lots when they have Verbs are to expensive.Chris

I don't know if Kmart price matches. My nearest ones are 1 hr away because most of the nearby stores closed down.
I'm well stocked up on media for the time being and will only get it if it's at a cheap/clearance price. Keep an eye at Wal-Mart.They've been clearing out a lot of japanese Maxells- full hub white inkjet printables and reg discs. I am very well supplied on Maxell-002-00 White full hubs because of my local wallyworlds clearances.

I did find one pack of 50 Sony DVD-R MIJ (white oct.) at Walgreens for $15.98. Everything else is MIT. I'm still spoiled on + though. I hope my 400+ TY I have on hand will see me through. ;-)

I found the only Sony MIJ in the University area Circuit City, white octagonal spacer, MIJ, yup, TYG03 disks, he he he. The Staples around here only has MIT disks. Too many AD people around here.
