Just picked up 2 100 spindles of 16x Verbatims 4.7GB -95102 at Buy.Com for US$36.42 with a US$15.00 rebate. Did I mention free shipping? Plus, they gave me an additional 7% off in a email offer as a returning customer. Net US$19.92, or 20 cents each. I've had success with Buy.Com's rebates in the past, so......hey!
From my limited knowledge of the market, this offer sounds pretty good.
Here's the URL (are we allowed to post URLs?)

I screwed up my math somehow. On my email order confirmation, they're telling me that I spent US$67.74 for two, or $18.87 each after rebate. 19 cents each.

saugmon- I've bought verbatims from buy.com a couple of times ! They box & pack them really good & if you get a deal with free shipping so much the better ! I don't know if they are still running this promotion but for awhile they had a $30.00 off your purchase deal if you signed up for a Buy.com Credit card & used it for the order! I got a Spindle of verbatims & The DVD set of The Complete Greg The Bunny for what I would have probably paid for the verbatims alone !The seem to be pretty decent to do bussiness with ! Just remember to use the google check out if you can ( atleast for your first order !) It can same you money if they are still running that too !Well My Spindle of MIT Sony DVD+R's that I don't remember buying now had two more Brothers,Sisters , Siblings ? not sure if Blank media gas a gender ! But it was lonely LOL! Anyways Only slightly negative thing about Buy.com is the don't seem to put the DVD+R Verbatims on sale or atleast not often anyways ! well saugmon good luck with your Pollywogamous Family ( oops !I almost said Polygamist ! My mind ! I miss it so Much !!!!) & Happy Burning & VERBATIM hunting CIAO!!!

This has probably been touched on here at AfterDawn many times, but do the +R's really make that much of a difference for single layer DVDs? The -R's I've used seem to work just fine. I think I read that we should avoid +R DLs (or is it -R DLs? -I'm old and I forget things). But for 4.7 GB DVDs, does it really matter?
Thanks.

For single layer -r seems to be the most combatible with more dvd players, +r is good for bitsetting your disk to dvd-rom. I perfer to use -r more so then +r. For DL, you wanna go with DL+r's and avoid DL-r's. I hope this helps you out.

For the average burner, the formats usually don't matter a lot because they'll play those backups on a couple stand alone players.
Now someone who makes a living at backing up wedding and other home video's onto dvd, they will see the compatability difference because those backups will be playing on a lot more drive.
If you have a booktyping capable drive: Benq,Plextor,Lite-on,LG,etc,the plus format booktyped to dvd rom is by far the most superior of the formats. It works on +r/+RW/and +R DL.Counting those 3 for the plus and the 3 for for the dash, then you have a total of 6 different types of media for your player/s to read. RW media is trickier on stand alone players and the DL media may be even more trickier. That's why it's best to Booktype DL media-totally different format and a lot of players haven't seen them.
If you have no booktyping capability, the Dash format should give you the highest stand alone compatability rate,as apposed to the plus format. You'll also see NEC and Pioneer drives love the dash format.
Burner quality also helps out. Some of the low quality drives-not going by the price-do give lower stand alone player compatability as well as more errors on their backups. HP is a prime example, LOL. You can't judge a burner by the price. I paid $35 for my Benq 1640 and it fares as well as my-when it was brand new- $140 Plextor PX-716A.
If dash R fares ok for you, then stick with it.It's cheaper if you purchase it off the net stores. If you run into any stand alone players that doesn't recognize your backups and give you any of the following error messages, then you may have a format issue:
Dirty disc
No Disc
Wrong Region
Wrong Format
I've seen all 4 of those error messages, and after booktyping-no more compatability issues.

I've used a couple different batches in the +8x speed:
MBI- Moser Bauer
Cmagnetics- CMAG
If the label says Made in India-which most of them are- Moser Bauer
If they say Made in Taiwan, most likely cmags.
I had no trouble with them, but the MBI staples discs were given to me because a buddy with an NEC 1100A had terrible results with them.
They definitely score lower than my ritek, ricoh,Ty,Hitachi, and verbatims. Some burners will have a harder time with them, same goes for stand alone players.
Office Depot is the only House brand that I'd use. Pretty decent Ritek and Ricoh media at an excellent price when on sale.
If you can use the flash drive,go for it and test them out for yourself!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Saug, I tested out after the OfficeDepot test lol. That 75spindle of those week before last will not work on my stand-alone recorder, it rejects every one I tried as "unable to record on this disc" Prob nothing wrong with them but my standalone was never rated for 16x and has been abandoned by funai. I guess if you get a whole year of service out of anything these days, you're @!!@ lucky.

Thanks very much for that cogent explanation. I wasn't sure what "booktype", the noun or verb, meant. I'll check into it some more to see if I can do it with my NEC ND-3500AG or some software. Sounds like fun!

Booktyping is also called Bit-setting,in case you run into that word. By booktyping, the backups are actual dvd-roms,but you're changing the beginning of the disc-when the disc is first read,so that players think they are dvd-rom format. A little trickeration and usually the cure of those no disc errors from stand alone players and other drives.
I believe the NEC 3500A can booktype the +R DL media.I'm not sure about the 3500AG. There's gotta be some hacked firmware as well. If you ever need to booktype,cdfreaks.com would be the place to go-in their NEC drives forum.
