That has some truth to it. This thread tells which chipsets work with the modchips and which don't.

First lets get a couple things straight

a> Macs suck. They're a weakass computer for doing anything other than pretty pictures. They have less than 1000th of the iso/crack/hack/burn/copy utilities of their much more powerful bigger brother the PC. If you want to seriously do stuff like copying wii games, get a PC.

b> WII cyclowiz works great...i've installed over 30 of them now and they're all happily circumventing the copy protection Nintendo so weakly put in the WII. It's obviously that Nintendo built the WII to be hacked like the Xbox 1 was since they basically made a hack "landing spot" for a mod chip. All my friends are now happily backing up their WII games and putting their original store purchased copies into their fire safes...yes...thats it...heh heh say no more?

c> Newsgroups rock...i'm surprised that so many people ignore them in favor of d>. Every single WII game is on the newsgroups and if you have a decent provider of news, you download them as fast as your connection allows(i'm downloading at 1100kb/sec as we speak). Download EVERYTHING, upload NOTHING. And the best part is that it's completely anonymous.

d>Why do so many lemmings rely on torrents? It's like a poor mans bastardized socialistic newsgroup. Torrents are a collosally slow way of getting ANYTHING. They are EVIL. They are not your friend. You must CONNECT to seed computers, passing your IP and basically your home address to that seed. RIAA and other agencies currently have IP capturing seeds in play capturing your information. That uber fast seed you just got that copy of lost planet from? Probably a M$ SEED. Encrypted Torrents? A JOKE...encryption only stops middle man viewing...it doesn't stop the man from knowing you if he owns the seed. Seriously...the guy who invented torrents should be shot...2007-2008 are going to be bumper crop years for the man and his John Doe warrants with information gathered by company owned seeds. Don't be a statistic, spend a lousy $14 on a news account.

I just subscribed for the 2 week free trial for usenext.com and I'm pleasantly surprised how much better it is then Torrents. I don't like how they have limits on the downloading though.

Also, if its NTSC how do you know if its NTSC america or japan?

Newshosting.com is widely known as one of the best values with a $14 unlimited account. I have had zero problems with them over the three years i've been with them. 70 day retention. alt.binaries.games.wii is your best friend. :)

As for clients, theres lots of free clients around to access the newsgroups but I use newsleecher. Queue up what you want to download, start it, come back later to unrar/unzip whatever you got. Ever had a corrupt file downloaded? Everything posted on the ng's generally have par2 files which are parity files for your posted files. Quickpar is a free utility to rebuild any corrupt files if you have any.

Finally, msg me if you need any more information on newsgroups or if you subscribe to newshosting...i'm sure the forum mod would like us to stay on topic which is how to burn wii games. :)

P.S> make sure you get your wii asap...the later versions are getting patched to stop the current modchips from working.

I'm a total newsgroups noob....I downloaded a newsreader and used the news server provided by my ISP....it said that alt.binaries.games.wii was not a site (possibly blocked?)
Do I have to go through some one like newshosting.com? what sort of speeds do you get when downloading a game? are all games availabe in NTSC format? (does the 8 connections thing mean simultaneous downloads?)
i have a mac and am using the UNISON newsreader...if I subscribe to newshosting.com does that allow me to access alt.binaries.games.wii with the Unison reader?

thanks for any help

if your reader does NNTP(newsgroups) then it works with any newsprovider. (private msg me if you join)

I currently download at my full 10mbit from 4 connections to newshosting.com.

Every single game PAL or NTSC that is out, is posted on the newsgroups right now.

Remember though that it's still good to purchase games that you like. I only recommend people to try before you buy with newsgroups...if people don't buy, we get a Sega Dreamcast part II where they can't make enough to keep an excellent platform affloat.

I don't know what NNTP means?...I can access sites like alt.binaries.movies if that means anything?
Are the games available in a .rar format that expands to .ISO?.....Since I'm a Mac guy I can't do the backing up/unscrambling myself

nntp is the service that news travels on (smtp is for simple mail transport protocol, FTP is file transport protocol etc etc).

It was originally designed to transfer news from university to university at the very beginning of the darpanet/internet but a couple smart cookies figured out you could encode files/split them up so that they could be transferred in packets that could be put back together at every place in the world that "subscribed" to that particular newsgroup.

These days, nntp or the newsgroups sends well over a terabyte of data to every nntp site in the world(10's of thousands of high bandwidth nntp servers) that takes a full feed DAYLY. Think of newsgroups as a large torrent that does not require you upload to use it and that torrent has files on it that instantly show up on 10's of thousands of highspeed connections instantly. (i'm talking OC-192 type connections, not the slow DSL/cable connections torrents waddle along on).

If it's not on the newsgroups, you can request it on the newsgroups or other places which link to the newsgroups and nice people will often post it for you.

The best part is that it's anonymous and unless you do something to cause a government agency to get a court order and force an nntp provider to give them your information(extremely hard to do and i've never heard of a single case happening except for people SELLING games(may they die and go to hell)). It boils down to happy sailing for try before you buy.

Besides the games theres tons of FAQs and utilities to help you better understand the insides of your wii on nntp/newsgroups.

If the wii posters are going along with scene rules (there are actually rules for these people to gain credit on the FTP sites all of the games start their journey on), i'm sure they'll be in iso format. They always have .nfo files with them which explain a little bit about them.

iso is burned with almost every utility out there.

Haplo, thanks for all the info....I really appreciate it.
I'm really considering joining but I haven't done any research on other providers....what is it that newshosting.com has that others don't?
If I join newshosting is there anyway you could point me in the right direction in terms of where/how I can acquire backups of the games i"ve purchased?

Newshosting has unlimited downloads for $14 a month. They have had zero service interruptions for me and since they're cheaper than giganews/usenetserver, there's no reason to look any where else.

Alt.binaries.games.wii is where the backups are.

Perhaps google nntp/news groups for more information about how they work. It's very simple and works great for Everything.

As i said it's probably good if you google it. I'm sure people don't want/need to see a running commentary of newsgroups in the wii burning thread.

8 connections can be run at the same time to download from newshosting.com. if one connection gets slowed by something, the other 7 take up the slack to give you the maximum download speed you want. (i only use 4 and use my full 10mbit so 8 is pointless unless your isp limits the speed per connection to a slower speed)

I see comments about specific types of DVD drives to rip the Wii disc, but do you need these said specific drives to burn downloaded ISOs?

Not necessarily. If you're using -r's then any good burner will work. If you're using +r's then the drive must be able to booktype to dvd-rom.

I've used TY 8x -r's and Sony 16x +r's and both work great. Remember, +r's must be burnt as roms.

Haplo I need help!!

I subscribed to newshosting (username cheesypretzel) and downloaded trial of NewsLeecher. I think I'm configured right and can see a list of all the groups and subscribed to alt.binaries.games.wii

But when I go to the Articles tab and there is alt.binaries.games.wii I cannot find any articles/headers/etc. It's empty! What am I doing wrong?

Sorry if this is off-topic just looking to get Haplo's help :)

Right below that articles tab is an update button. Hit that.

I was doing that, but it turns out I had accidentally hit the Pause button at the top so it wasn't letting me update anything XD
But the program didn't let me know it was paused, it just didn't respond - bad user interface IMO.

Anyways, it's working now and trucking along. It only downloads one article at a time, I thought Haplo said it would do 8?

Newshosting doesn't have any software that I see, I downloaded a trial version of NewsLeecher. I've never used newsgroups before so I'm kindof fumbling my way through :)

Once I found stuff to download (I'm getting Red Steel right now) each Wii game is like 100 seperate files, I assume one of those files will have an executable to link them all together in an ISO - don't know yet.

So I queued up the 100 or so Red Steel files and it's only downloaded one at a time - that one is getting between 225-250/s
