I assume all the files are in .rar format?
You have to indiviidually click on all 100 files? you can't just click on one and have it download all the files?
How big is the file total?
Anyone you could take a screenshot of what is going on and send it to me?

It's made up of rar and par files. Make sure you get the par files, also.

You'll need WinRAR and quickpar. Quickpar is free. Download and install it. Then when you're done leeching the game files, double click on any one of the par files first... not the rar files.

What quickpar does is it checks each of the rar files to see if they are corrupt. If one is, quickpar will rebuild it using the par files.

Once quickpar is done, then you can unrar your game files and you'll either have an .iso or a .wii. If you end up with a .wii, you'll need to download Rawdump.

It's an easy program. You just click on the "convert raw to iso" tab and it'll rebuild the .wii to an .iso.

Then just burn.

unregistered version of newsleecher only allows one connection/thread at a time. if you register it/"find" a registered version, it does unlimited.

I registered mine because the registered version gives you access to supersearch. if it exists, you can find it with supersearch. :)

I "registered" NewsLeecher but it still is only pulling 1 at a time. Is there a setting somewhere I can't find? I see one for max bandwidth, but not number of downloads?

When you're setting up the server to use for connecting to he newsgroups, theres an area for "Connections". It's under Manager.

What newsprovider are you using cheesy?

Again, the absolute best newsprovider is at http://www.newshosting.com/?a=122089

I've been using them for 3 years now without a hickup...way cheaper than most and 100% completion.

you need to download all the headers before you can see whats there. trust me, like every single PAL and NTSC game is on newshosting right now. :) if its red, it's not complete so you may need to get par2s.

OK, i'll chime in on the hijack.

I use easynews.com as my newsgroup subscription. 9.95/month, not as long as a retention as Haplo's site. But, it's got a web based header system that allows you to check individual, or ranges of, files and then zips up the files into 1 of 10 queues. So, you don't need a newsgroup reader, though you can use one. You can then use a DL manager to DL the zip file, and the DL manager will open up the connections to speed up the download.

Definitely get the pars, and WinRAR, as well as a good DL manager (I use download accelerator, free and fast.)

BTW, 9.95/month gives you 20 gigs (I think, at least) that roll over each month. I have 200 gigs stored up at the moment.

Lastly, you can use logmein.com to setup logmein on your home computer. This way, you browse at work, select the files you want, login to your home computer and start the DL. Productive!

Sorry dude, browse this, zip that, bla bla bla...sounds like alot of extra steps to me.

Newsleecher, click on group, get the headers (or don't if you use supersearch for whatever you want), download, extract. burn. play. Simple. It takes 2 mins to get headers, select the ones you want and walk away.

20 gigs for $9.95 or UNLIMITED for $5 more. Wii games are like 4-5gigs so you might get 4 or 5 of those and nothing else. I download maybe 400 gigs a month off newshosting...for $5 more than you pay for 20 gigs.

You use your 20 gigs and then what you do for the rest of the month, walk away and wish you could download more? Pay another $9.95? Hrmmm, lemmie do the math here....umm ya no kthnx bye ;)

hey hap,

different strokes for different folks. you start tossing around terms like nntp and downloading headers, and stuff not showing up, it might actually be easier for people to just use their browsers, click a few checkboxes and have it zipped up. i've used news agents or readers or whatever they're called in the past. i just find this way easier.

yah, 20 gigs for 10 bucks, or 5 bucks more for unlimited. it's no skin off my back, just another option. not like i work for easynews or i get some kind of referral fee. i'm sure there are better options out there. hell, i can walk down the street and buy wii games for $1 a pop. instant gratification. whatever works.

you want me to say you win? ok, you win. feel better now?

heh, i'm not sure where you're going with this but there's no intention to "own" you.

Just doing the math for people...$5 less and you get maybe 5 wii games with nothing else like movies etc.(theres way more things up on nntp then wii heh heh) I used to justify it to myself on astranews...until I started downloading 400+gigs a month. Once your fingers get in the cookie jar, you rarely want to stop with a couple cookies, why not eat the whole darn thing. :)

For the people still confused after my meanderings, I found a kickass site which shows everything you could ever want to know about newsgroups, how the split files work, fixing with par2's, unraring etc... http://www.slyck.com/ng.php.

Last thing i'll say...alot of people are looking at torrents as a godsend but if you understand the technology, you quickly see how software companies putting up a fast torrent site of their own but logging ips could get you into ALOT of trouble. If your local laws do not allow downloading things, they can prove everything necessary to get a john doe warrant on you. Torrents scare the living crap out of me...and the "encrypted" ones are no different...you still have to connect to a seed to download things...that hyper fast seed you're getting something off...might just be put up by the company you're "borrowing" from. Personally I buy what i use and delete what I don't however these guys are serious as a heart attack about protecting their interests with people who do not honor the code.(people who sell things they get should be shot and deserve that jail cell they ultimately always get put in)

You can get newsgroups on any computer, mac, pc or windows/unix/macos.

The only thing that differs is what client you use to get it. I'm pretty certain that there are mac clients out there for getting nntp/newsgroups.

I have the Mac newsreader "Unison"....it allows me to enter certain addresses like alt.binaries.games on ISP news service but won't let alt.binaries.games.wii open.....once I subscribe to newshosting.com how do I access it on my newsreader?

Yes, alot of isp based news servers do not carry many or ANY binary newsgroups anymore and if they do they have like a 2-3 day retention.

http://www.newshosting.com/?a=122089 will get you access to every single newsgroup out there(there's nice things about wii, xbox, xbox 360, ps/2, dvds, etc etc...you name it), 70 day retention etc etc. They also have smaller pay per use packages if you don't think you're going to go hog wild like most people do. :)

haha, ok, not a contest. either way, there are, like haplo said, much better and me reliable options than torrents, which scare the bejeezus out of me too. it's like dl'ing from kazaa or limewire or any other p2p, you're just not sure what you're going to get.

most pro newsgroup servers will do virus and crc checks, and posters also provide parity files. newsgroups are platform independent, and posters in each group are usually tight knit. if you contribute, you can expect to get your requests filled. besides, all the big cracking groups post on newsgroups (paradox comes to mind.) and like haplo said, there are other things besides just wii games.... i get all my psp games, episodes of 24 and heroes, programs, even operating systems, at speeds and reliability much greater than a torrent could ever offer, installing only two programs- WinRAR and download accelerator.

Is there any free newsgroups? $15 a month seems pretty steep, considering I can download DVDs and stuff from bit torrent for free. Not that it isnt worth it, but I was wondering if theres a "no frills" version or something that is free to use and download games?

tony,

chances are with a free newsgroup subscription you won't be getting the retention of posts or access to newsgroups that you want, most of which will be the alt.binaries.* groups. you are supposed to get access to newsgroups through your ISP, but most times those are next to useless for what you're trying to do. do a google on newsgroup subscription and it should pull up enough ads for you to peruse. you might be able to find one that meets your budget. $15 or $10 or $5 isn't all that steep considering the things you will have access to (programs, games, mp3s, tv shows) plus the peace of miind that comes from not having to use a torrent, as well as much faster DL's.

Unless you post to newsgroups, it pretty much hides what you're downloading. Torrents you have to connect to seed computers(often many of them) which could be a piracy detection seed...you never know. Any new torrents of new things are so slow it's painfull(unless more seeds get the stuff). Most seeds require you also kick in bandwidth in order to get things forcing you to cheat them by using a bandwidth limiter unless you want your connection hosed. Not much good comes out of torrents other than its a bit cheaper.

New things show up on nntp instantly and I can download them at my full 10mbit speed all day every day...I don't have to wait for seeds to propigate.

...$15 a month is steep? Thats not even a quarter of what a single game would/should cost you should you like it...heh. Won't be very cheap when that nintendo wii torrent you connect to lands you in court...

Hey Haplo,

You managed to convince me to join Newshosting. I'm a complete newbie and I just downloaded newsleecher. I clicked under "manager" and added server address "unlimited.newshosting.com" and my username and password, and clicked "connect". However, i am unable to connect for some reason. It says "offline (connect on demand)" What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

I would love a good tutorial explaining the whole newsgroup process as I'm a complete n00b when it comes to it. I agree that the speeds of torrents are ridiculously slow and I would love to experiment with newsgroups

Try a different forum. This isn't the place to discuss these things...
However personal recommendation:
newshosting.com (unlimited) + NewzRover
