peer guardian owns the [removed] out of the safepeer plugin. safepeer blocks like 170,000 ips; peer guardian blocks millions of IPs

^^ I don't know how you qualify that statement considering they use exactly the same lists if you set them up to.

There is a playoff with blocklists. Not enough is unsafe, but too paranoid kills legitimate connections too and causes reduced download speed.

Try Adding this Into your List Manager.

Howdy,

I too was having recent problems with peerguardian (i.e. as in a couple of days ago). My problem was that when updating, peerguardian would crash completely.

I found this thread over at pheonixlabs (the people responsible for peerguardian), here. This really has great info in it and I would really suggest people read it fully.

To summarise:

a) Phoenixlabs are moving their blocklists to a new cache, but an error has occured and is currently being resolved.

b) Result: some lists will either not update temporarily or are corrupted.

c)Solution: For the time being disable the education and p2p lists from updating from their standard download locations (i.e. uncheck p2p and edu lists in peerguardian).

d) Add the link as stated by donewell http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/level1.zip, to your peerguardian blocklists.

e) Now when you update you are essentially getting your p2p list from another location, which crucially is up to date.

f) Keep an eye on the thread I mentioned above as when the updating error is resolved you should be able to update as you used to.

Hope that helps. But really, keep an eye on the peerguardian forums, it has all of the information you need.

ok. so here's what to do guys. the best way i think to utilize pg2 is to NOT use its built in list updates. after much research tonight i found what i think is the best method.

download BlockList Manager 2.6.5 from here...

http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.p...iewcat&cat_id=2

before you install go into pg2 and open the list editor and uncheck the lists that are updated through the web (likely all of them unless you made your own custom lists). now install BLM 2.6.5.

open the program and go to options (you will be prompted to check for an update to the source lists and you need to do it). after that the options dialogue pops up. the general tab should need to alterations. move on to the sources tab. here you will want to check off the lists you want to enable to be downloaded when you run this. i checked everything except Edu Ranges, Master Exclusions (because the file type is NOT for PG2) and Non-LAN List. i have all the rest set to "yes".

personal sources should need no changes so go to app locations. check off peerguardian and navigate to the lists directory in the pg2 directory of program files. this is where it will continually store the new guarding.p2p for pg2's use.

log locations should need no changes.

selected filters - just check off peerguardian. apply changes and click ok. now you are back in the main window. click the Process button at the top and let it run. when all is said and done you should just click export list and it should ask you if you want to overwrite the existing guarding.p2p file. say yes and it will convert the list and store it for pg2.

now go back to pg2 and add a new list - of type BLOCK obviously - and select the file by browsing to it. finally done.

for future use you will just need to click Process and then Export (pg2 will probably have to be shut down b4 this and then reopened for the list to take effect).

i remember clearly that the makers of pg2 had a blocklist of about 700 million (ads, gov't, p2p, and spyware combined). this list that is now in pg2 is now blocking a whopping 2.7 billion. the stats in the BLM program say that this is 63% of known IP's. wow.

enjoy

You might want to mention that this will also block a number of google IP's, just so that you don't get any angry replies when folks try to check their Gmail and can't connect all of a sudden...

Personally, i don't see why one shouldn't surf while downloading, i for one am getting a nice linux distro via BT right now, and checking my email, all while browsing AD.

i don't block http so i didn't know that it blocks Google. makes sense though. i don't block http because it was overly cautious in my opinion. plus, people could always just right click - allow permanently to add it to the perm allow list if its a place they need to connect to and trust. but good point.

not so savy person here!!! Well I've followed the instructions for BlockList Manager so see how it goes. I've been getting Peerguardian probs for a couple of weeks now and been worried about the consequences. Thanks for the advice on this thread, it has been well worth trying all the workarounds....seems to me to be quite a bit of fiddling tho but I guess this should be expected! Thanks again.

Here is the solution!!

I've been having this problem as well. This is the easiest and fastest way to solve the issue.

Click "List Manager"

Uncheck "Educational"

Close out that window.

Then click "Check Updates"

The P2P list will finally update.

Go back into "List Manager" and check "Educational" to turn it back on, close out of the window and you are good to go!

Now, to update the educational lists. Click "Check Updates" and keep an eye on the block list on the main window. You should see the bold text for a university, mine came up University of Maryland. Now, right click on the university that is being blocked and select "Allow for 12-15 minutes". Now, click on "Check Updates" and the Educational list should update without any problem.
