If Xplorer360 is giving you hassle, by all means, try FATXplorer, I have added it to my Software page!
@ farrantch
Yes you can, but I don't encourage that sort of thing as it almost always goes wrong and you'll be back here asking me how to fix it!

Hi,
I got an error code 11 when I booted the Xbox with the DVD drive IDE cable unhooked. Is this OK?
Also, when I hook the Xbox drive up to my PC and use xplorer360, I get the error:
Could not find a FATX drive to open
I'm desperately trying to fix error 16 from a softmod gone bad.
Thanks for any help!!!

Hotswap Tips:
1) Hotswap while windows is loaded. Use the "Scan for hardware changes" in device manager.
2) If having trouble, especially Error 16, unplug the DVD drive within the Xbox and allow the Error 12 screen to appear. Then hotswap.
3) If using the Xboxhdm hotswap, don't start the hotswap until you have already loaded Xboxhdm.
4) Should you have any issues with your HDD not being detected, turn off your PC, turn it back on and press the 'Pause|Break' key prior to the BIOS auto detecting HDDs. Perform the hotswap at this point, then continue the boot.

I will try this.
I'm definitely concerned about the Error 11 I'm getting instead of the Error 12. Does the hard drive also unlock on an Error 11?
Thanks!!!

Ok, so the hard drive appears just fine under Disk Drives in Device Manager. However, when I try to open it in Xplorer360, I get the message
Could not find a FATX drive to open!
I don't think the hard drive is unlocking due to the Error 11 that I'm getting. Any other way to force a 12?
Thanks!

Ok, so I was going to try the software at hddunlock.com, which claims to retrieve the HDD password. It wouldn't run, telling me the Xbox drive needed to be a master.
I changed the drive to a master and before trying the hddunlock software I tried xplorer360 and it read the drive!!!
I copied the MS Dash files to the Xbox c drive and it looks like I am up an running!
Thanks for the great docs!!!

Oh, yeah, right out of the Xbox, the drive was set to cable select. I changed it back to cable select before putting it back in the Xbox.

Nice tip, I've also heard of problem drives being fixed by removing the jumper completely!
I'll add this to the troubleshooter!

Make sure you are unplugging the correct cable and only the IDE!

For hotswapping via this method, unplug the CD drive in you computer! Where the CD connected to the motherboard, this is the spot that you'll connect the Xbox to!

Like I said, you only want your HDD plugged in, unplug the rest and plug the Xbox to the Secondary Master!

OK another one. I was playing a game for a longtime lastnight and set the fan pretty high. Now when I connect the xbox HD to my PC my fan on my PC goes crazy! Any link to the XBOX fan settings? If so I think I have some hope but if I dont get it in a few hours Im going to bed and getting a new XBOX in the morning. I DLed the second season of Arrested Development and I was feeding it to my TV VIA networking my PC to XBOX and sharing files with windows to XBMC. Now I am getting pretty pissed cause it could take me days to get things together to softmod a new one and I just got the networking and FTPing to actually work right!
Also as far as softmodding it with a hotswap. I was just reading a how to to do just this and they left out disonecting the IDE from the DVD drive, they went with just disconecting the HD IDE cable.
Is there a specific reason for this? I have read lots of good replys on it.
And also, can I use the XBOX and AID to do a hotswap for a HD upgrade. Can I just load up AID ( after I do a new softmod ) and disconect the cable from the HD and plug in the new one and use AID like it says?

To cure the Explorer 360 issue... Make sure the jumper on the hard drive is set to "Master". I had the same problem b/c the jumper on mine was set to "Cable Select".
If you're not into manually softmodding the Xbox - it'll get a lot easier when you do it a 2nd or 3rd time - then use the AID disc to set up the hard drive. Pop it in your Xbox and follow the instructions.

To late I replaced the system with a new one. Besides it locked the HD wrong I am pretty sure. FATxplorer wouldnt work either and it wasnt the cable issue cause it conected right the first time.

Ok my xbox hdd is hooked up to the primary master cable and my comp HDD is hooked to the secondary master cable. The device manager detects it but xplorer360 still says couldn't find FATX drive to open. Any suggestions?

Keep trying, Xplorer is a pain in the ass, it'll work eventually though!
Why is the Xbox on the Primary?

Any setting on PC that I should change in PC Bios, perhaps...? Anyone, please! Thank you in advance!

For anyone thats having trouble with xplorer360 not being able to read their hdd, try the older versions. I've uploaded them all here
The one I downloaded off here didn't work, but when I tried the beta5 version, it read it instantly o.O Just go through each one, one will probably work.

hi great tut just want to sum things up you said on your links to different xbox tutorials thread this method also fixes the xbox live updating loop. Thankyou lots, you saved me alot of time and money. The only two options I had to begin with was to make a eeprom reader/writer or get a modchip and fix it that way. After searching for answers all over the place you give me the best, easiest seeming and cheapest solution.
kudos and thankyou.
