There are many ways to fix an Error 16, but for some reason this seems to be really difficult for some Consoles.

I've written this because I believe it's a sure fire way to ensure satisfaction!

What do you need?

* Xplorer360
* MS Dash 5960
* PC

You can grab the needed files from HERE

Getting started...

Ok, obviously your console will not respond to anything you do.

* Open your Xbox with the Torx Screwdrivers

HOW TO: Open your Xbox HERE

* With the Xbox now open, unplug the Xboxs DVD drive IDE cable

* Power on the console and you should get an Error 12 on your screen

* Do not power the console off, unplug the Xbox HDD IDE cable. Unplug the IDE cable from your PC CD\DVD drive and connect it into the Xbox HDD. Your Xbox HDD and your PC HDD should now be connected to your PC, nothing else.

* From within Windows, you need to go to 'Device Manager'. From there you need to press 'Scan for Hardware Changes'. This will only be available after you have clicked on your computers name in the list.

Your Xbox HDD should now have been detected!

* Open 'Xplorer360'. Click on 'Drive > Open > Harddrive or Memcard'

You should now see all the partitions.

* Click on Partition 3 (C:\)

If there are files in there, delete them. You can now 'Right Click' and 'Insert Folder'. Simply select the folder with the new, clean MS Dash 5960 files.

It should now look like this...

* You can now unplug the IDE cable from the Xbox HDD (DO NOT TURN THE XBOX OFF!!!), plug the Xboxs IDE cable back in and also reconnect the Xbox DVD IDE cable too.

When both are secured, you can power down the Xbox.

Upon reboot you should be greeted with the clock. Fill in the correct time and you should be all done!

Let me know of your success with this method!

Cheers!

Chunkhead

I don't believe this is possible, however, try it and prove me wrong!

Report back if you have some success!

I also have the same problem. The computer detected the harddrive (on primary master), but xplorer360 could not read the disc. Also, when I put the IDE back in the xbox and restarted it I get "error 9". this is bad right? Is this possible to fix or is the harddrive (and xbox) dead? :(

Xplorer can be a pain in the ass sometimes, you just need to keep at it! Do it again and again until it works!

Don't let your Xbox power down without the HDD though as it will lock it wrong!

That's a new one...

Does this happen everytime?

You also don't want your Xbox to turn off! What error screen have you got now?

For those having major issues with this process, use my XboxHDM Hotswap tutorial instead!

Device manager is a Windows feature, you can't just 'Get' it!

I'd also probably resize your signature, the mods will have a field day with that. The size contraints are in the rules!

I tried doing your error 16 hotswap w/xplorer 360. Everything seems to go well. After I insert the ms dash folder to partition 3 I don't know what it should look like (the last pic in your tutorial won't show?). Anyways I'm assuming it worked b/c I see the ms dash folder on the right hand side of xplorer 360. After I reconnect the ide cables and power off the xbox and then power it back on I still get error 16. Any help is appreciated!

You MUST delete the entirety of the 'Partition 3'. You can then copy across the new MS Dash.

Did you use the one from my software page or your own?

I've fixed the picture, I fear that you may have simply placed the folder into Partition 3, not the contents like the picture!

Don't know why the old picture is missing, doesn't matter, new one there now!

;)

You need to place all the new files into Partiton 3. If there are files there, they must be deleted first!

Don't need the SID files for hotswap!

I'm confused!

Are you trying to open a Hotswap, drop the SID files in and then try to use them after you put the Xbox back together!?

Not sure if that works but, the files should be placed in 'Partition 4' in 'UDATA'.

They need to stay in their folders (55ee0000, etc)

Just thought I would let you know I used this option to fix my problem with an error 21. I purchased an already modded xbox and being the curious George, I had to try to add Mame to it. Somehow I replaced the system default.xbe with the Mame default.xbe. I tried other methods of hot swapping and could not get my pc to see my xbox hdd. I followed this tutorial and the device manager would see my xbox drive but xplorer360 would not. I ended up using fat-x-plorer and used it to delete the mame default.xbe with the system default.xbe and I am back up and running after months of frustration. Just thought I would share my results in case some other knucklehead does something similar.

Thanks chunkhead

thanks chunkhead. i got it to work great! i have another question tho. could u use this to softmod your xbox in the first place also? lets say that ur box isnt modded at all. could u umplug the dvd drive, turn it on, let the error pop up, umplug the hd, connect the hd to the pc and use xplorer360 to place files on the c:/ that would make it softmodded. im probably missin so small detail that prevents this, but if you could do this please tell me. after doing this i have a nonmodded xbox with stuff on it from when it was modded, but i dont have the splintercell cd anymore, so cant re-softmod it. if this is possible, could u possibly make a pre-made c:/ with unleashx on it? thanks 4 everything?
