Yes & besides my Samsung 20x burner hasn't gone over 18x with either Verb or TY DVD's. 8 to 12x is fast enough for me....

How do you like your samsung? I need another burner to go with my benq 1655 I like it real well. Great test results on burns with TY , Verb & Ritek media. Has lightscribe but I don't need that capability as I'd prefer to print on the disc with Acoustia CD label maker & my Epson RX680 printer. Prints great & I don't need to use Epsons Print CD software!!

Hum, there is load of misconceptions in this thread.
But yes, 18-20x is just a marketing gimmick but not much else. If you wan't to go for it, then Verbatim (and perhaps TY) is your best pick. But really, under no circumstances the 18-20x can be recommended, unless you are burning for testing. At very high speed other parameters, such as disc vibrations, come in to play potentially reducing the quality.
20x will never be significantly over performed, as DVD technology has pretty much reached its physical maximum, so 20x for DVDs is equivalent to 52x for CDs. Only realistic way of significantly improving the speed from that would be using multiple lasers concurrently - I beleive Kenwood has a CD-R drive using a similar solution years ago, but I am not 100% sure. Definitely the developement will go to improving and mainstreaming the BD-R format.
As a product tester I have burned literally thounsands of discs, wearing out a number of drives. I would not recommend going to very slow speeds, if high speed certified media is used. You can of course evaluate your burns using Nero CD-DVD Speed. In some cases the recording quality will actually drop in terms of PIE/PIF error rates - as usual this is not the full story though, as recording at slow speed may produce "stronger" pits and some media picky devices may benefit from that.
As a rule of thumb, quality 8x media can be recorded at 8x speed and slowing down usually does not bring any benefits. Vermatim's AZO media usually performs well, whether it is recorded fast or slow, but the recorder used obviously has a large role to play. For 16x media I would recommend 8-16x speed, depending on various issues - quality scan should be used to evaluate quality and to find the optimum.
And finally, here is an example of Verbatim FLYING on Pioneer DVR-115D:

I've found that if you burn the 16x Verbatim stuff any slower than 8x on the BenQ drives (I have (1)1640, (2)1650, (2)1655 & (1)1670) that my scans aren't nearly as good. The 1640 likes 8x while the 1650 & 1655 like to burn them at 12x while the 1670 seems to do the best job on the dreaded CMag stuff . . . 16x burned at 8x with scores over 94

It's a Teac . . . But it burns CMag DVDs like they're good media
And it burns CDs much better than the Philips chipped BenQ drives . . .
Right now, I'm tearing up a pair of Samsung drives . . wow! are they quiet . . .
