As I posted above, you would need usb advance with a USB drive.

Yes it should have a loading screen, that will show your games installed on the hd.
You said previously that you had a mod chip. Do you know which one, as there maybe a certain button you need to press on your gamepad first once the cd is in the drive.

If this is what I think you are asking, you need the retail disks of Swap Magic to boot them. You can't burn it and use it unless you have an older version of Swap Magic(Retail)

I would get the Swap Magic Coder 3.8, thats what I use and havent had any problems yet with any backups.

I hope I'm not beating a dead horse or restating the obvious.

I have a two year old boy so the idea of backing up games and playing those is great. Unfortunately I have a V15 and I understand this to be the worst one to play games off the HHD. I am waiting for my SM 3.8 Coder disk and keys/switches to come in the mail. I also got HD Xtreme hoping to play off the IDE HHD's I have, but now find that it won't work so well. So my questions are this, and thank you to those that help. (HD Xtreme is HD Advance and USB Exteme on 1 Disk)

1) For playing off the HHD would I be better off getting a "fat" PS2 and connecting it to the HHD via the network adapter or get a "slim" V12/13 and setting it up with HD Combo or something along those lines? I don't have a chip and am not experienced with soldering so I was just thinking I'd load/boot it with the SM 3.8 Coder or the HD Xtreme? I do understand that HD Combo does need some soldering and I can probably get that little bit done* Are there any advantages or disadvantages to using one or the other?

2) Has there been any reported problems with SM 3.8 on the V15 with backing up the games and playing the back ups if I choose to just keep my rig? Anyone have any experience with Guitar Hero II, Madden 08, or some of the more recent games?

3) Are the problems with using the V15 via a USB 2.0 IDE HDD Enclosure just the slow and skipping movies? How is the compatibility with backing up and playing games? I know it will be limited to USB 1.1 and I can can deal with sloppy movie scenes but is the game play crappy as well or are most games not even compatible with it?

Again Thank You to anyone who can help me on this matter and answer a few of my questions. I'm sure I'm not alone and there are others who could benefit from these. Feel free to PM me if you prefer. Many thanks to the helpful and awesome people on this site!

Hay, Madhart you know most of the stuff. I would suggest if you have EXTRA money to get V13 the best slimline model that is and have it HDComboed. because you will get the advantages of Slimline and most of the laser issues in V12 have been Fixed here. You can also go for FAT ps2 as it will be hassle free and cheap but there are some issues with newer games being unplayable on older PS2s.

Gameplay with USB HDD is as good as on Disc but movies and music can have issues. I have seen that games that have videos playing in the menus may become a nuisiance (WWE games, James bond FRWL .etc).

You would only be able to add a USB hd to your V15. There are some posts about that on pages 13, 14 I believe. Just read through a bit and you will find. And there is a site which shows what games are compatible on the USB drive. So if you decide on this make sure the backup is compatible first.

you mean add a USBcombo modkit to a v15, right? Because $$$ony locked out all unofficial usb peripheral devices with the move from v12/v13 to v15. Codebreaker doesn't work, none of my pendrives work.

I have a V14 PS2 hooked up to USB External Samsung 300GB HD, has AC power plug in. Works great. I am not all sure what drives are compatible and work on a V15.

I have a modded V15 ps2. I am very intested in playing games using HDD. Currently I have a 160gb USB drive. I have tried to follow the steps that smokyrain and wangle are discussing but unfortunately I could not follow. Is there anyone who could post a step by step procedure to do this. Thanks for helping a newbie.

The original post by Masterchu.

THIS TUTORIAL HAS BEEN UPDATED ON JUNE 21 2006- PLEASE REREAD FOR NEW CHANGES

This guide is for MAC users and regular PC users as well.

:: How to use an external USB HDD on your Slim PStwo to play games ::

STEP 1 - Gathering your tools: (updated)
Get everything you need in order to copy and play games off a USB HDD from your PStwo:

- USB External HDD
> (usb powered or ac power, whichever)

- USB Advance ELF
> (http://web.archive.org/web/20070509122400/http://sksapps.com/hd/USBADVN.zip)

- Swap Magic disc to launch ELF files
> (http://web.archive.org/web/20070509122400/http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/350517#2064564)

- MAC users - VirtualPC with WinXP & USB Extreme to transfer games
> (http://web.archive.org/web/20070509122400/http://www.hdadvance.com/download/USBExtreme_wininst.zip)

- PC users - WinXP & USB Exreme to transfer games
> (http://web.archive.org/web/20070509122400/http://www.hdadvance.com/download/USBExtreme_wininst.zip)

STEP 2 - Format the USB HDD to FAT32 - updated
Most USB HDD's are pre-formatted to the MS-DOS Fat32 file system, and this will work just fine.

To format this to the FAT32 filesystem, do the following:

PC USERS:
- open up a MS-DOS prompt window
- type the following after the C:\> prompt:
> (replace "X:" with your USB drive letter)

- FORMAT X: /U /FS:FAT32 [enter]

- answer YES to format warning

MAC USERS:
- open up Disk Utility
- unmount the USB drive
- click on the USB drive
- click ERASE tab at right side on top
- under "Volume Format" select MS-DOS file system
- click ERASE button at right side on bottom

STEP 3a - Copying games to the USB HDD - updated

For both PC & MAC users, you will need to do this step via WindowsXP
(refer to STEP 1)

- connect the USB HDD to your system
- insert PS2 game into DVD drive (copy's are fine)
- launch USBeXTREME
- select drive letter of PS2 game
- select if game is CD or DVD
- select drive letter of USB drive
- type in a title for you game (eg: Hitman)
- click copy button

Depending on the speed of the drive and size of the game, it may take up to one hour for the game to be copied.

STEP 3b - Alternative copying games to the USB HDD - updated

This is a faster method for copying games to a USB HDD, but you need a HDD and a USB enclosure case.

- power off computer
- connect secondary internal HDD to your system
- power on computer
- format this secondary HDD to FAT32 filesystem
- insert PS2 game into DVD drive (copy's are fine)
- launch USBeXTREME
- select drive letter of PS2 game
- select if game is CD or DVD
- select drive letter of the secondary HDD
- type in a title for you game (eg: Hitman)
- click copy button
- once all games are copied to HDD shutdown computer
- remove internal secondary HDD
- insert secondary HDD to USB enclosurer casing

This method is way faster, for a 4.4GB game, it will only take about 7minutes.

STEP 4 - Using the USB HDD on your PS2 Slimline - updated

You will need to "exploit" your PStwo Slimline so that you can launch a single ELF file called "USBADVN.ELF".

Method 1 - Using SwapMagic to launch ELF files
> (http://web.archive.org/web/20070509122400/http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/350517#2064564)

Method 2 - Using Ace's guide to launching ELF files.

Remember that the USBADVANCED ELF file must be run off your USB HDD if using the SwapMagic method. I haven't tried Ace's method, so I don't know if it works or not.

Okay, that's the end of this long winded tutorial. I believe I got every step for both the PC users and the MAC users.

Ok first you need to have your PS2 modded in some manner, either with a modchip, magic keys, or fliptop.
You can just use the tape and tissue method or straw method instead of magic keys.
http://www.geocities.com/scorcci/tutoriais/pstwo_easy_mode.html
http://www.geocities.com/pstwoslimline/tapetissue.html
The type of USB drive you get needs to be backwards compatible with USB 1.1 as the PS2 is not USB 2.0 capable. Seagate, Western Digital, Samsung etc. Mine has an AC adaptor and usb plug for PS2 or computer.
The software is not free no, you either need to get USB Extreme, but you can only use it for the USB hard drive, the good thing about it though is you wouldnt have to mod your PS2. Or you can get Swap Magic, and then you would have to follow the tutorial above by Masterchu to get it too work, plus you could then play PS2 backups also.
As for getting an original joypad for PS2, I get my stuff off Ebay.
I don't know what shops you have over there, but at stores that sell PS2 should have them also.
Also check the faqs and guides in my signature for more info.
Hope that helps you out some.

*hi
is it possible to use the laptop hdd in an usb hdd case with the ps2 slimline (version ??). it already has a mod chip (name ??) that has worked with all games for the past 2 years, but the lens has gone way weak.
is it possible to use all free softwares to do this, cause i cant buy the softwares.
i have winxp. can anyone please guide me on how to do it, i have ready all the steps mentioned here but cant fully understand them. do i have to write some CD and use on the ps2 while the hhd is connected or is that only for non modded ps2's. plz help.
also i have a hitachi 250 GB HDD (not of laptop) and an usb enclosure for it, will that work.
