how many rom drives do you have. if possible open the tower to look at the back end of the rom drives. you should see 3 cables, the 1 closes to you that has 1 red, 2 black & 1 yellow is the power. the next 1 is either a 40wire or 80wire 40pin connector data cable. the 3rd cable is your audio cable that is mostly gray till near the drive than you see a red, 1 or 2 blacks & a white wire going into a connector. do you have that cable in your tower??

did you check the volume control on the drives. sounds like both drives sound section is burnt out for some reason.

checking the volume control on the drives? Is that different than just checking the volume control under accessories and entertainment?

if both drives have an audio cable installed, remove 1 from a drive to see if any sound than do the same with the other drive. can you try the drives on another computer to see if problem follows or not?? when you cranked the volume on the front of the drive, was that with the speakers plugged into the front jack or the back 1 as volume control works on the front 1 only

don't play the speakers to long but for testing purposes than should be all right. if get sound thru front end of drive than either the audio cable has a break in it or possible damage to onboard soundcard. can get another audio cable that has same connectors as your's has to see if it is the audo cable or onboard soundcard. if onboard soundcard is the problem, can disable it in the bios & install a pci soundcard. if it is the rom drives causing the problem than replace the dvd rom drive as it is cheaper of the 2 drives as it goes for about $26Can for a LG 16x dvd rom

an audio cable might be a couple of dollars. if you have or know somebody who has a multimeter to do a resistance or continuity check on the cable

walmart might have it & usually standard size as yours is. 1 end of the cable might have more ends on it as for various sound connector configurations but will have the ends you need to hookup
