Anilyb,
The only way DVD-RW 4x would work in your unit is if you bought one that was already upgraded from the factory.
The box your unit came in would have been labled or had a sticker on it to that fact.
No original unit that has not been upgraded with the upgrade disc would be able to record on a DVD-RW x4.
As for the GQ discs, 8.50 sounds good but I've heard horrible things about GQ discs. Stick with the Verbatim or Maxells.
Have you tried using 8x discs in your unit?
Seriously, check your box to see if it says you can use 8x discs. If so you don't even have to worry about finding 4x discs as the 8x's are found almost everywhere.

We have one of those DVD recorder works fine except you can't find any blank DVD to record on. The clerk at Walmart said this is discontinued item. so there for I guess I have a dinosaur. Back from Fred Flintstone days. If you are old enough to remember the 8 track players back in the late 1960's thru eairly 1970's what a hunk of junk. As a player it's fine but as a recorder not worth anything. I been to 7 stories around Dallas Texas looking for blank dvd that I can record on.. Bottom line I think I'll see about a new machine that will do everthing. Good luck if you have one

I'm sorry that you are having a bad experience but I have to say that mine does a very good job for me. I use Maxell's x8 most of the time and they work just fine. I can find these everywhere...Wal-Mart, Office Depot, Best Buy. If you don't have the upgrade from Emerson and all you can use is the x4 then call them and get it. You'll be glad you did.

oldhommer all you need to do is order the update firmware disk from emerson, they'll mail it to you. I think you might be able to download it and burn it to a disk if you have another recorder, also. Or have somebody burn it for you. You dont have a dinosaur. This technology changes fast. My emerson has burned a ton of disks so far, long as you buy good quality disks (NOT MEMOREX) you'll be fine. I have the updated model '5', and Im burning with Verbatim 16X disks (though it only burns at its max speed which is 8x,Im sure) Good luck with the upgrade.

regarding 16x discs....
I went to Best Buy & saw a deal on some DVD-r's brought them home, and then realzed they said 16X on them, and not 8x...so I took them back, but didn't really see a big selection of 8x's at all, mostly 16x's...what happened? Is everything going from 8x to 16x now? Do I need to get *another* firmware upgrade, because obviously the Emerson will not record or play the 16x's...
I can always get my money back & go to Walmart for 8x's but this was a good deal, so wondering if there is a firmware upgrade to 16x...

If you have the emerson "20v5" like mine, it will record the 16x disks
just fine, I'm on my 2nd fifty-pack of verbatims now=so dont take them back, they are high-quality dvd-rs. It just doesnt record at 16, remember. Only difference Ive noticed is that it seems to take a few extra seconds to 'finalize' a disk once its full. But not so much you really notice. Try one, and see if it doesnt do just great!!
If you have the old model without the "8x"firmware upgrade though-Im not sure. Good luck!

Help me!!! I have the emerson recorder. I know this problem has been adressed but i don't realize how to fix it. I downloaded the firmware for 8x disc. I pressed the cmskip 654 or whatever the number is. I have repeatedly tried to put it on both cd-r and DVD-RW disc. When i put it in the player it loads for a few seconds and opens and says insert new disc. It also won't let me leave the firm update mode on the player.

The 20v5 may record on 16x times discs, but upgraded 10v5's and 10d4's can not.
You can still find 8x's media at many stores.
Try K-Mart for 8x fuji's in 25 and 50 packs.
As well, you can find maxell 8x's media at Office Depot, Staples, And Fry's electronics.

Hi guys,
My problem is back. Set up thru component jacks. I can view DVD's on that input but not VHS. I can see VHS and DVD's on channel 3 after pressing Vid/TV button on emerson remote. Most annoying cause I can monitor start of dubbing w/o switching back and forth. Can anyone tell me what stupid button I pressed to fix this before? It was display but now that doesn't work.
Thanks.

Use the cable hookups and you don't have too worry about the component wires and the dvd and vhs will work and when your dubbing you can watch tv if you press tv/vcr button.

Yeah, can do that. But I thought (according to the manual) that Component was supposed to be the preferred method so I was just wondering why I can view DVD but not VHS through it.

Timo...
Component is the preferred method of viewing DVD. Component allows the dvd's 480 lines of resolution where the A/V jacks give only 380 as I believe.
The reason why you can only use the A/V jacks for VHS is no matter what a VHS only throws something like 220 lines of resolution so the signal would be bust thru component hook up.

While you guys are on the a/v jacks and component jacks, can you explain this to me.
I believe I have my Emerson hooked up incorrectly. I cant view DVD/VHS at all with it, and when I go to record something and press video/game button, the screen goes into a darker state. Please help, as I believe this is hurting the quality of my DVDs.
Thanks.

Help!!!
I've had the Emerson vcr/dvd recorder for about 2 months now. At first, it worked great, now I have nothing but problems with it.
1. I can't dub vcr tapes to dvd anymore, as soon as I put a blank DVD-R in, it loads it then immediately starts recording the tv. If I press the blue dubbing key, it does nothing and keeps recording the tv. If I press stop, it does the "recording to disc" thing, then immediately starts recording again.
2. After I record a DVD-R disc, I can't edit or finalize it. The "disc is full" error screen comes up and I can't get rid of it. The setup button on the remote doesn't do anything. If I open and close the dvd tray or shut the unit off and turn it back on, it loads the disc, then the error screen comes on again and won't turn off.
3. As I'm recording, I can't stop and finalize until the disc is entirely full (then I still can't finalize!). If I press stop, it records to the disc, then immediately starts recording again.
If anyone has any suggestions, PLEASE let me know!!!! Thanks.

I have an Emerson recorder - VCR and DVD - It works fairly well.
However I have a problem when I play DVD's - Every time a movie is about 3 /4 way through it freezes. Nothing will work - fast forward, play etc.
After a few minutes it will start up again but will have skipped over a portion of the movie - almost as if it is working in the background.
I have tried to get around this by scene selection and then playing in reverese - but it will not let me go back to where it was frozen.
I have tried cleaning it with 3 different types of cleaners - nothing works. The same DVD will play fine on my computer.
Any suggestions ?

Hey out there in Emerson land...can anyone tell me why the clock changes on my recorder? It just changes time randomly, no power surge or outtage. I mean I've sat in front of it and watched it change for no apparent reason. Plays havoc with timer recording. Any help appreciated.
