Hi Everybody in Emerson Land. I've had my 2 since Jan 05 and I appreciate all the info posted by us Recorders. I started out with a deal on TDK 4X from Target and bought 160 of them. They worked for awhile and call Cust Svc and got the update disc in about a week. Still had problems with TDK, probably just a bad batch. Try Staples brand and worked fine. Then got deal at Office Depot with the generic brand(Office Depot) Made in Taiwan buy 1 get 2 free 50 for $35 ended up with 150 discs. They work good but sometimes about 4 out of the 50 are bad on the spindle. Are on my 2nd spindle and great so far.
One of my recorders has a problem that was addressed by 2 subscribers, it goes about 1 min and then the clock reverts back to zero. I found if you record 5-10 seconds and then write to disc, it will record a in 2,4,6 hrs under title 2. After finishing just delete the 1st title of 5-10 seconds. Another minor problem is most of my old VHS tapes from mid 80's which I cherish and now are recording to DVD are about 6hrs13mins long. In 6 hr mode the DVD's record about 6hrs5mins thus cutting out about 6-8mins at end of tape. Oh well, no biggie, I like the Emerson I have the 20v4, it was affordable and although I cussed it out some time, I believe it's not the recorder but the future coaster disc. I've done about 350+ disc so far. Before going to bed pop in a 6 hr done in the morning. Before going to work pop in a 6 hr done. Thanks for all the info here and remember it's not what you pay for something it's the fun of having memories in the future.

There's so much good info on this board thanks to everyones input. Now.....this may be a dumb question but I just bought this Emerson EWR20V5 & got it all hooked up. I have a 31" Panasonic TV with Comcast cable (no cable box.
1. I've tried to pre-set the VCR to tape a program. I set it to channel 5 (NBC)... I left the recorder on like I think the book said, and then pushed the tv/video button to watch something else on a different channel. Lo and behold it taped, but not the channel I set it for, it taped Lifetime ( I'm very confused as to how this happened ).
This Emerson seems very complicated. I feel like I need to have the tv remote in one hand and the vcr remote in the other just to set a time for taping.
My old vcr died the other day & it was a piece of cake. Am I doing something wrong?
Just a few minutes ago it was supposed to shut off at 8pm, and it did not, even though I had it set to turn off at 8. Now my head is really spinning.

All i know is with my DVD recorder is, i have digital cable and whatever recording device i have, since the cable is digital and has a descrambler/decoder box hooked to the tv, all recording devices i have are set to channel 3 and once im recording off the digital cable weither im watchin while recording or if its on timer, i cannot change the channel,( plus when its in timer record mode you must remember to leave the scrambler box on or otherwise it will not record nothing) because the digital channels which i have 300 plus cannot be tuned in through the dvd recorder tuner. thats why i have the scrambler it does all the tunning of channels and routes it through channel 3 on it, unless i would have the recorder hooked up to basic non-digital cable, so i cannot flip through the channles while it records another one.(unless you have 2 tv tuners in the tv, or in the descrambler)

Creating titles with different character sets:
In title mode, there are 4 sets of characters available: UPPER CASE, lower case, numbers, and @#$%!. Press the UP/DOWN button on the remote to pick the character set desired (the check mark indicates which is selected) then press ENTER on the remote to select it.
To put letters in the titles, using the number buttons pressing each on repeatedly to get the letter you want. (They are printed on the remote)
To put numbers in the titles, use the number buttons as normal.
To put @$%^ characters, press the character button repeatedly.
You can switch character sets on the fly to make titles like:
Bob & Brenda's Wedding 6/10/1998
If you mess up a character press the CLEAR button to erase that character.
The title MENU will not actually be created until you FINALIZE the DVD, although you can view the titles in the SETUP-DISK window, where they can be edited until you finalize.

I'm having the same problems listed in the following post. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated:
Maybe some one can help me because I am completely confused with my Emerson DVD Recorder(DVD-R/RW). I purchased it a while back sometime last year around October and it's been working great until now. For the last 3 days I can't record anything. I keep getting an error message saying something like "Recording Error", "Can Not Record On This Disc", "E4 0000000" or "E4 EA03738B". I have been buying the same discs since I bought the machine, which are Maxell 4x DVD-R's and Memorex 1x-2x -RW's. At first I thought it was a bad box of discs, so I purchased new ones, but it still is coming up with this error. Sometimes it will let me record, but then when it writes the movie to the disc I get the same error message, or the error message pops up when I try finalizing the disc, usually when it hits around 60%.
I'm also getting this message with DVD-RW, maybe 2 out of a pack of 5 discs. On top of that when it does record on to a DVD-RW, on the 2 or 4 hour settings the movie starts to skip or freeze frame if you will call it that, around the last 30-60 minutes of the Disc.
I have tried many discs, roughly 20 now of -R and -RW and had nothing but problems, even with purchasing new discs, sometime I get lucky and an old disc will write or finalize for me. I'm using Maxell 4x and Memorex 1x-2x -RW's. I never had a problem in the past, so I'm completely lost here.

I had a different problem but it rendered the machine unuseable. I fixed it by unplugging the electric from the machine for about 20 mins or so. Once it powered back up all was well. I suppose it was like a reboot or reset or something. Give it a shot.

I found out something today that might explain some of the sudden problems that some folks are having.
I talked to a friend of mine today that is one of the best electronic guys that there is. I asked him if he was into repairing the DVD burners yet. He said he had worked on a few, but that there was not much repair the local shops could do to them. He went on to say that the biggest problem with them was the Lazar. He also said that the lazars only lasted a certain length of time and then they would burn out. It is kind of like a computer crashing, it?s not if, but when. Sort of like a light bulb, they only have so much life, and only last for a while.
While he was explaining this, a lot of the problems folks have posted on this site and a lot of other site like this started to make sense.
Anyone else out there familiar with this?

I agree about the laser life.
I read that same thing a while back.
I guess if you burn, burn, burn like crazy you will end up killing the machine. I've had my emerson for almost a year without any issues. I've burned about 100 DVD-R discs and countless RW Tv shows.
The same thing happens to DVD Drives on computers. Only thing with those is you can replace a dvd drive for 35-50 bucks for a very good burn while these are over $150.
Oh Well.

I have just started reading the posts, as I have had an EWR-10D4 for over a year. The difficulty of finding DVD -r/-rw disc that will work on this machine, i can't get any dvd -r nor -rw to record unless it is 1x, 2x or 1x-2x. No matter what brand it was or where it came from.
I just called for the firmware upgrade today and was checking out the websites about the CM Skip function. You know what happens? I try the cm + 123 very quickly tip and i get the firm update mode. Yay!
Now the bad news. If you don't have the update disc to put in there, you are stuck. Without actually unplugging the unit for at least 20 minutes, there is no way you can get out of that window. I know. I have been trying since mid afternoon and to no avail.
Please post if you have found another solution for this without unplugging unit and having to set all those things you have saved back again.
One good thing about finding something wrong with something fairly new :
Eventually someone else will find that problem also, then it won't be a new problem anymore.

Have you turned the power off?
I assume you have done that so I think you are going to have to bite the bullet and unplug it.

I have also had trouble finding discs that would work in my Emerson EWR10D4. I finally solved the problem by forgetting about the recommended discs and trying others. I would get new recommended by Emerson discs and 2 or 3 out of a package or spindle would work and that would be the end of it. It would give me the "playback is not possible on this disc" message. It didn't matter if it was recorded on the computer or the recorder itself. Verbatim DVD-R 4X finally worked for me. Does anyone know if this recorder will recognize DVD+R discs booktyped to DVD-ROM on my computer? I have tried several times without success. They play on other recorders and players, just not mine. I would rather not waste the time and money to find out it doesn't work. I have enough discs laying around that I can't use now. Of course, friends and family love it when they visit and leave with free discs. Thanks!

Stick with the Verbatim 4x. I use the Digital Movie disc's and they work everytime! Also, Maxell 4x and Khypermedia 4x work great.
Don't listen to that Khypermedia is CMC MAG nonsense. They work and record great in the Emerson. Just sampled another two this past weekend and the sound and picture were crisp and clear.
You can find the Maxell 4x at Staples. I see 4x there all the time. Office Depot carries 4x Maxells as well. Try to get them made in japan as those are Taiyo Yuden top line discs. The Khypermedia 4x's can be found at Officemax, although it may be that they are almost all sold out on them.

Thanks GregRod
Sticking with the Verbatim Digital Movie 4x as long as I can get them. As far as the booktyping goes, I have found that I can get Fuji DVD+RW 4x booktyped to DVD-ROM to play on the Emerson. I cannot get Maxell 8x DVD+R or Verbatim Digital Movie 4x DVD+R to work. Any idea why? I'm using a Benq 1640 and Nero Express to record.

DVD+R will not work in this unit.
Also, most of the time a DVD created in a burner will not work in the emerson recorder either.

Thanks again GregRod
I just assumed that since a booktyped DVD+RW worked that a booktyped DVD+R should too. At least now I know to quit trying. I have no problems playing my home movies burned with the Benq onto Verbatim DVD-R on the Emerson. I went through a lot of different discs to get to that point though. You've been a lot of help! Thanks!

Hello Emerson Owners,
Have a question about Emersion EWR10D4 DVD Recorder DVD-R 4X, and I recorded on disc that are only 4x made by Memorex, TDK, and Maxell. My recorder can't recorder on disc higher then 4x, but I need tried recording on lower speeds disc like 1x or 2x. So before I go out and buy lots of discs, what is the best dvd media for a Emerson recorder, 1x-2x, 1x-4x, or just 4x. All these speeds on the discs get confusing. Thanks

Personally I have found that Verbattims, Maxells and TDKs work great in either the x4 or x8 speed. They are the best in terms of availability. You should call Emerson and get the update disc for the machine sent to you so that you can move up to x8 if it doesn't read them now.

High Again:
I have some questions or thoughts, you guys might help.
Numero uno ?: Wolf123 when you speak of cleaning the recorder, do you mean by a DVD disc cleaner or taking the case off and cleaning the interior? I have a Philips disc cleaner and by inserting the disc about every 50 hours of operation it seems to recognize the blank discs better. When cleaing the interior do you have to be careful not to disturb any components and what do you use to clean it?
Numero dos ?: Also, if some of your VHS tapes are old, can you hook up another VCR and played it into the Line 2 the front inputs and record from the VCR side of your DVD recorder, to try to make a better looking newer VHS tape to then record on to a DVD blank disc. Simply put can a VCR record to the VCR side of the Emerson?
Still trying to put all my old VHS onto DVD's slowly but surely, Thanks for this forum, it's interesting

I am new at this forum, but wanted to let you know I have a new Sylvania DVD-90VF recorder from Sears (was on sale for $149.99) that I am testing out, it seems to be pretty stable, straightforward, & sturdy, and can record to 8X DVD-R/RW media, Just wish it had 3hr rec. mode in SP quality to compete with the (flexible recording, on the Panasonic, or the upgraded Lite On recorders), then I'd have the best of all worlds!,,, Hey Funai are you listening??? Thanks for lookin, Mike
By the way, Sylvania/Emerson/Symphonic/Funai, all made by Funai
