Mark, I didn't know that - I've never looked at the disk contents on a PC. I'll try putting the disk in another DVD player and see if the thumbnails are there.

I'm back again regarding Chapters. I've recorded the program and am able to mark chapters where they need to be --BUT, how do I rename each individual chapter section, i.e. instead of just Chapter 1, 2 or 3, etc. naming each chapter with a specific name such as Player "# 87", then the next chapter "Player #90"? I've read the instruction book through on chapters and titles, but it seems you can only change the name of the main program, not individual chapters.(?) As you can from the late (or early, depending on your perspective)hour at which I'm trying to get this done, I need to do this ASAP. Thanks again!!

To Don2blues, In regards to storage...Hey Don, nice to hear from you. I've been using the wood/metal storage cabinets called Vaultz from Office Depot for my collection. It has a lock and key system for keeping out prying eyes. Holds about 300 DVDs in plastic sleeves. I've included the url:http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do;jsessionid=0000gSxZX_AhWikJTS...
Take care, Manny

Hello Manny, hope this finds you doing well. Thank you for your cd storage tip, excellent. I've shared with a couple of buddy's here at work that are share in our Sharp experience.

Ever have any finalizing difficulties? Mine are not good. For some reason I can only finalize about 50% of the time, onto DVD-R's. When it fails the disc goes bad. So what I do is use a DVD-RW which usually works then simply make a copy using my computer onto a regular DVD-R. Can't figure it out. Have initialized a few times thinking that if I started with a clean slate... Haven't run across any firmware updates. Still going strong, Don

VMG: You can't name the chapters. However, if you are going to dub them onto a DVD, you can make up a playlist, inserting each chapter one by one, and then you can name each item in the playlist. Then dub the playlist contents to the DVD, 5 at a time (for the '300, you can do 10 at a time on the '400).
Hope that explains it.

Hi Don ole buddy, yes as a matter of fact. I was using a different brand of DVD from Maxell. I'm thinking that the higher speed brand might be the problem..not sure yet. I was using a Verbatim brand and I had no problem Finalizing. I havent tried the "Verbatim" brand again to see if it is indeed the dvd brand. It is weird though....Let me know what brand and speed youre using at the moment. And maybe Silver can get back to us on this, see if he's had the same problem.

I read somewhere some time ago someone didn't manage to record onto a Traxdata DVD-RW 4x. Personally I use Traxdata DVD-RW 2x with no problem so I did then some research and found out some interesting facts.

- In the Sharp manual, they say that compatible DVD-RW for recording are DVDs version 1.1 or 1.1/2x (what ever that 2x means - is that speed ?)

- DVDs even if they are of the same type (-R) can have different versions apparently. Because I found on traxdata website I think that the Traxdata DVD-RW 4x are not version 1.1 but something else (maybe 1.2 or 2 I don't remember and I can't find the information anymore). I have noticed on the back of my DVD-RW 2x cover, it actually says version 1.1. But of course when you buy them, they are in a box and there is no way you can tell the exact version.

Besides on many shops, you don't see or you see less and less DVD-RW 2x, because the new 4x and 6x are common now. That worries me a bit, because does that mean soon you can't find media for this Sharp anymore ?

Thanks Erik, some good points there...I too have gotten a bit worried. You are quite right about the 2x - 4x not appearing on the shelves any more. They are rapidly becoming replaced by 6x - 32x and yes the x is the speed that the recorder can burn at. No doubt it is the problem that some of us have been having in our finalization. A little more research on the net might be the way to go right now. The only reason I switched brands was because I had purchased all the stock the office depot in my neck of the woods had. Now, they have restocked but with the faster speed "Verbatim" stock. I haven't tried those yet, but I never had any problems finalizing with the older slower speed stock. I don't think its the Sharp, it's the faster speed blanks that are coming out.

Manny, reading your various postings I think you are the most knowledgeable person on the matter and probably the best one to help me.

I have been using my DV-HR300F for almost one year now but I only recently used the "playlist" option to be able to burn DVDs with more than 5 short films. It worked OK except that after I deleted the "original titles" from the HDD the "playlist" option did not work any more. I think the reason is that I did not delete the playlists I had prepared before deleting the original titles they were linked to.

Is this a bug in every DV-HR300F set? Now, each time I want to create a new play list by pressing "new" or to delete one of the 4 playlists I had created by selecting one of them, the machine freezes and all the other buttons (return, exit, arrows) are ineffective. I have to unplug the set and wait a few minutes before plugging it back on.

Is there a way out? Do I have to reformat the HDD? How could I do it? Or should I send it back to Sharp?

Pilchard,

Have you edited the original titles (e.g. erased parts of the titles) after playlists have been created on them ?

I use playlists a lot and so far I have had no problems deleting originals that have playlists attached to them. When deleting the original, all playlists related to that original are automatically deleted, and of course the other playlists are unaffected and I can still use them normally.

Nevertheless, if I alter an original title that has playlists attached to it, then when I try to use playlists, the Sharp hangs and yes I have to unplug it as well. Here when I say "alter" the original title, it means editing it by erasing some parts, for example removing the beginning and the end of the title, removing advertisement in the middle etc. So I always make sure to edit the original titles first before I make any playlist out of them, and also to never edit originals titles after playlists have been made out of them.

Manny, how's it going? A friend here at work brought up a question. "Unfinalized" discs, do you think they're playable in different brand dvd burners? i.e. Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, etc. Perhaps another approach might be... can different brand dvd burners add programs to the "same disc"? i.e. You own two different burners and want to add programs to the same disc from each burner?

Will try some different discs/brands to look into my finalizing issue. Have a good day buddy, Don

No Erikk, the titles were edited before I put them in the playlist, I just deleted them after copying the playlists on a DVD. I had four playlists and now these empty playlists are impossible to delete, it is even impossible to create new playlists the machine just hangs as soon as one option (new or empty playlist) is selected. How did you get rid of your playlist with altered titles?

Anyhow, it feels good not to be alone with this type of problem. Thanks.

Pilchard,

I just deleted the altered original title, and then the related playlists were gone automatically and I could reuse the Sharp normally again.

So far I have used only very simple playlists. They are all a segment of an original title. I've never tried playlist spanning several original titles for example.

Regarding unfinalized DVD ...
It would be nice if it existed a PC program capable of recognizing those unfinalized DVD and finilizing them ;)

Hi guys, hey Don! Unfortunately the burner that created the unfinalized disc is the only one that can alter it. It's alot like starting a disc on a PC with one program an then trying to add or alter it with a different program. So far I havent found this to be possible. In most cases the files won't even appear on another PC.
In regards to playlists. Yes the playlists you create with the various recordings you make are directly affected when altering the originals in any way. And yes sometimes the unit freaks out if you all of sudden change or delete the original files. But I too havent found this to affect any other playlists associated to other video files. Naturally I refer to anything burned to the Sharp as files....again remember this is more like a PC and less like a VCR. No wave form with magnetic properties in this beast. Pure text files which are read and interpreted by the Sharp. Which explains why you can pop it into a PC and either play the files or even copy them to your PC to create copies...clones of the original.
kind regards, Manny

Thanks Erikk and Manny. It looks like I am stuck with my Sharp that freezes each time I try to use the Playlist function again. Is sending it back to Sharp the only option?

Hi Pilchard, first try setting it back to the factory settings. To do that you will erase everything on the HDD hard-drive. So make sure you burn anything you don't want to lose. The method is refered to as "Intitializing" Go to the main menu and look for that option. Once you start this, there is no turning back. It will go back to its original factory settings.

Thanks Manny. I'll try that, but first I'll have to go and by plenty of DVD-RWs! I'll keep you informed.

Pichard,

You could also try this if you haven't already.
Just after you turn on your Sharp, press on "Original/Playlist" to switch to playlist mode. Then press "Start menu", then select "Edit/Erase", then "Erase all titles".
It might work if the Sharp hangs only when you try to display the whole list of playlists.

Erikk, you had a great idea! It worked! Since I did not know that after pressing "Erase all titles" as you recommended I would be given the choice between "originals" and "playlists", I was affraid the originals on my HDD might be erased and I first saved all my recordings on DVDs. This took me the week end. Meanwhile, I got an answer from Pixmania where I bought my recorder and to whom I had written to explain my problem. The answer was: "send the machine back. Repairs will take four to eight weeks". I am really glad you had the idea of this short cut!

Thanks again to you and Manny

Great going Erik, Pilchard so glad things are working again. Yeah thats the only answer these companies have, is send it back. Then its weeks before you will see it again.

cheers, Manny

Hi BayuTiger,

on July 5th you wrote an answer to MarkGil that the Sharp DV-HR300 does support AV Auto Rec, means that it can be setup to be controlled by an external receivers timer for recording purposes. You mentioned to press a button on the remote called "AV Auto Rec", which I can not find on my remote. Any hint from your side ? I tried "Direct Rec TV" and "Rec" so far.

I have an external DVB-T Receiver Philips DTR 1000 connected to the Sharp DV-HR350S (same as 300S only more HD space). It supports modes called "Record Link" and "Easy Record / Prepare Record". I have selected Easy Record so far, but will not get the Sharp to listen.

Thanks for any help!

I got my DV-HR300 over a year ago, and love it mightily, except for its really sluggish response to the remote. I took people's excellent advice and applied the multi-region patch successfully, and today I replaced the HDD with a 160G unit.

More through luck than planning, my new HDD was a Hitachi Deskstar, the same make and model (but double the size) as the one I removed.

I wouldn't recommend it to clumsy people, but if you've installed a HDD in a PC you might stand a chance. Just be careful, and have a magnetic pickup handy for when you drop screws into the case :-)

A tip: check the jumpers on the back of the drive. My new drive wouldn't work, but I realised the jumpers were in different possies to the one I took out. Once I moved one jumper, all worked well.

Now I have a spare 80G HDD to play with, and my Sharp now has double the recording space! Ahhh! Time for a nice Cab Sav, I fink.
