hi. i've not used CloneDVD and haven't quite got around to trying dvdsanta. However we don't need to worry about either of those at this stage as your movie is in dvd-video format, so it's purely down to a burning program (in your case Nero) to just burn the movie to disc.

As i say i can't see anything wrong in your logfile. I personally dislike Datawrite discs, regardless of what 'dye' they are (in your case 'G05'). Problems like this can always seem like the drive is playing up, however it could just be the discs. Also, maybe there's just dust in the actual dvd burner.

lol, yeah i s'pose a lot of it does seem like GOBBLEDEGOOK :)

nothing looks wrong in the info-tool log either.

just checked the spec of this burner, and it's capable of burning to DVD+R at 8x and DVD-R at 4x... so.... this is a long shot but i'm wondering if those discs you have are 8x discs and even though you're writing at 4x, maybe the drive can't support writing to 8x -R discs even at a lower speed.

you see the 'firmware' of your burner appears to be correctly recognising the discs. That's what this 3-liner is saying -
Quote:
Recorder: LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-851S, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: RITEKG - 05
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
But as i say, i'm wondering if the firmware isn't able to write to 8x discs even at 4x (firmware is what teaches your drive about media/newer media/burn speeds)..

(the question of burning higher rated-speed discs on a lesser rated-speed burner, even at a lower speed, comes up now and then, but i still don't have a definitive answer from anywhere or anyone whether this can be done)

(your firmware is up to date by the way, so that's good)

most people recommend 4x max for burning movies by the way...

Sorry, a lot of the above was me thinking aloud so it will help me looking thru it later, and anyone else who pops by also...

Have you any other (different) discs (escpecially -R) you can try (you don't have to waste/use any more discs to troubleshoot this, you can do 'simulation burns' which go thru the motions with a blank disc but don't write to the disc, and produce a nice section of logfile that we could work with ?

No worries. 4x discs might be an idea, it's just that 16x discs are becoming common now so 4x are becoming scarcer. Here's a thought - your burner can definitely use 8x +r discs which are obviously still in abundance. As you've a lite-on drive you should be able to booktype +r discs to dvd-rom format, thus making +r more compatible with more euipment. Not saying that theory I have re the 8x -r discs is 100% accurate, but its another option well worth looking into... See how you get on with whichever choices you make and keep us posted. Good luck

oh, you've had some success before with these discs, i thought you'd no success with them. ok, my theory's shot to hell then :)

..guess it looks like you need some better -r discs and/or some +r discs that can be booktyped...

yes iv used these exact discs before and they was sound at first then they started skipping titles or stopping and starting so i do think i need better discs ..iv only just tried Nero for the first time realy because i always use dvdsanta it is so simple with that(dvdsanta)it put it on dvd from start to finnish ..AVI,XviD,DivX, and loads more but now when i put blank DVD-R in my lite-on the light just keeps flashing green and waiting for disc...it sounds like it keeps trying to start up then slows...when i look at drive in (my computer)it takes about 10-20 even more blanks to be recognised and for it (drive)to show theres a disc..even so when it as recognised a disc it still canot be written to my dvdsanta changes files to VOB but when i try to write to disc i have trace errors after 1% ......but i still need better discs i recon but whether that sorts it is another thing....but i cant try till tmra LET U KNOW thanks

here's a link, BUT i don't think that's the solution - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1734

(nor do i recommend doing this). I personally think it's one of two things, better media needed, or the drive is shot.

NO CANT DOWNLOAD OLDER VERSION FROM THERE EITHER NEVER MIND ILL KNOCK THAT IDEA ON THE HEAD....CAN YOU MAKE ANYTHING OUT OF THIS I READ SOMEWARE:- I hope that people with grinding problems will read this. As I noted earlier in this post, if i would put any media in my dvd burner, it would make that same horrible grinding noise that my old drive made. And when it did this, it would not read the contents of the cd or dvd. I tried a million things and yetserday decided to try the one thing I hadnt tried yet, which was switching the Intel Ide Dual Controller (for the primary/secondary cannels) and making them the Standard Dual MS controller. Now, since then, my drive seems to be working normally! I have burned stuff and read stuff in the drive constantly for about the past day and it seems to be working fine (knock on wood). But if there are any people out htere with similar problems, try making that change from the Intel/VIA dual controller to the Standard MS controller (there are many posts that explain how to do it). Hopefully this keeps working for me. Thanks agian for all the help .....IF U THINK THIS COULD HELP ME DO U KNOW HOW TO ..AS IM NOT TO BRIGHT WITH COMPUTERSAND PRETTY DESPERATE (but ill try anything till i get a new one..THANKS

- this is all just from the copying stage (of the source disc)..... i'd say try copying the source disc's 'video_ts' folder to hard disc using windows explorer, then burn with compilation type of 'dvd-video' intead of using Nero's disc copy feature, however i think the problem here is due to a bad/crap source disc......

i take it you've got that Lite-on firmware from somewhere like this - http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html

i myself wouldn't normally shy away from experimenting with other firmwares but my 700A has been a rock-solid performer for like 1500plus burns..
i've had good luck so far with the 30 or so G05's i've used, but i've got like 800 Verbatim in stock so i'm ok for a while :)

ps can't see anything wrong in that logfile. i think for you the next step is to buy some better discs. i believe Ritek come 3rd behind Taiyo Yuden & Verbatim, (which is impressive) but maybe your particular burner just doesn't like the Riteks you have...
