Ive been reading the forums for a little bit and ive noticed a couple times people referring to their burners changing the media from dvd+-r to dvd-rom and it works in almost all applications of media devices... im having trouble burning dvds and having all of my standalone media players reading them... the dvds im using are the Sony DVD+R
Either response to the question above or how i can change my setup to make dvds that are more compatible would be greatly appreciated...

first of all Sony DVD+Rs are top notch media! what you are referring to is Booktyping/bitsetting your drive to record DVD+Rs and trick your players to accept them as DVD-ROMs so it is more universally accepted and will play in ALL dvd players. check out this link and scroll down to #12 Booktype/Bitsetting: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/183136
you can booktype your drive using DVDDecrypter, DVDInfoPro, and other programs. I changed my booktype using DVDInfoPro. It was easy and now all my DVD+Rs are compatable.
In DVDDecrypter you can change your drive Booktype by hitting TOOLS...DRIVE...... CHANGE BOOKTYPE. Your drive will now burn DVD+Rs and make them seem like DVD+ROMs! More acceptable. If you notice that you can only change booktype/bitsetting of DVD PLUS Rs ...... not the DVD MINUS Rs cause that's the difference....... between the + and the - disks. From what I learned.. -Rs have data already written in the hub area where the +Rs don't and that's where you can write on the disk to make them DVD-ROM acceptable. So when your dirve writes on the disk it will be more compatable with more dvd players and therefore makes the disk more playable. I hope I didn't goof it up..... but that's my understanding of it in simple terms.

If your Burner supports Booktype changing, Nero does it on DVD+R media by Default. If your Burner doesn't support it, I suggest you use DVD-R media for Best Compatibilty with Standalone Players. At least this is the case for me. I use LG Burners, Multi-Format ones. I have an LG GSA-4160B that does NOT support Booktype setting, However, my GSA-4120B does, and my GSA-4163B does too! When I Burn with Nero, it changes the Booktype to DVD-ROM Automatically on DVD+R Media.
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

I play may backups on many stand alone players/ps2s/and pc drives and the booktyped dvd-rom backups outperform my dash backups by a mile from both my benqs. No more dash format media for me.
Kaine1985,the booktyping doesn't really do any improvement on burning,mainly compatability on stand alones and other dvd drives.
Sony plus format media:
Excellent in the 1x-8x speed rate media.Yuden000-T02 and SonyD11
Not so great in the 1x-4x and 4x speed rate media. Huge quality difference between those speeds.
HP a1118x-b/athlon 64-3300+/BenQ 1650 BCDC/LG 8163B/Modded Wii/Epson-R300 and Ty Watershields!!!

I am in a little situation and am requesting any thoughts or sloutions. I have a family DVD which was some how made on a format which runs on my computer but not on my DVD player. I dont know if its the DVD player or is it the format in which the DVD were made in the first place. I tried to copy the DVDs with my burner but it still would not run on my home DVD player but would run on my computer DVD rom drive. Any thoughts on how to fix this issue, if this is doable.
Suggestions greatly appreciated.

@Kaine1985 or whom may concern,
NOTE: make sure your dvd burner is capable of "book typing" or "bitsetting" in order to proceed. Most of Sony/Lite-On, LG, Pioneer, Nu Tech, Ben Q, Plextor, Ricoh and NEC are changeable.
((Here's how to book type using Nero Burning Rom))
01) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
04) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every burning using a DVD+R disc your Nero will automatically change the booktype into a DVD-ROM format.
((Here's how to book type using Nero Express))
01) open up Nero StartSmart, then Nero Express
02) now click on "Copy Entire Disc"
03) click on "Options", then onb "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK", then "Exit" out. That's it... easy as sipping on some Corona. Again, now every time when you burn, Nero will automatically change your DVD+R into a DVD-ROM in prior to the actual burning process.
Basically, you only need to set the "book type setting" on Nero once. So, if you book type it with Nero Burning Rom already then you don't need to do it again on Nero Express or vice versa.

Ok, I have Sony Burner, Sony +R media, and a Sony Stand alone DVD player at home. All movies I burn work in all dvd players, except for mine! I burned a bunch at a friends house last night, and was happy that they all worked on his Sony dvd player. So, naturally, I kept burning! When I got home, none of them would read on my dvd player. Would these steps help me?
Is there a way to do this with CloneDVD2?
If not, what is a good burning program to use other than Nero?

@tmass77,
Here's how to book type using DVD Decrypter on DVD+R/DVD+R DL media. Below is only an example of mine, you'll need to know your dvd burner to proceed.
01) Open up DVD Decrypter
02) go to Tools, Drive, Change Book Type (now look for your Dvd Burner and click on it)
03) Change For: arrow down to "DVD+R/+R DL Media) and Highlight it
04) New Setting: arrow down to "DVD-ROM" and click on "Change", click on OK (when Success), and OK. That's it... easy as smoking!!!
Book typing your DVD+R or DVD+R DL into a DVD-ROM format is good if you have any stand alone dvd player that's over 1 1/2 or 2 years or older and older PS2 model. Not only that but DVD-ROM will be 100% compatible with all functional dvd players, this is good if you're backing up a dvd movie for a friend or family member of yours, especially you have no idea how old is their dvd player.

@tmass77,
You're welcome. I highly recommend changing the "book type" via Nero (using Nero's method - it's flawless; not only that, but it plays on any functional dvd players). However, you can use the DVD Decrypter method as well. I've just noticed that you have a Sony burner - so if you're thinking about changing the "book type" via DVD Decrypter (please use the LITE-ON burner), then just follow the steps I provided above, and you should be square away.
To get the latest version of DVD Decrypter, just type DVD Decrypter on the search button at afterdawn.com and you'll see it, then just download it and save it onto your system.

Thanks a lot Alkohal,
I have an IBM machine which has Intervideo recorder / player installed on it, which ofcourse does not help in making the copy of my DVD. I used DVD decryptor to make the copy. I am going to try to change the booktype like the way you explained and update you.

You're welcome. According to my understanding, if your dvd burner is capable of changing the book type or bitsetting, then Nero and DVD Decrypter is one of the easiest way to go.
NOTE: just make sure you have either a high quality DVD+R or DVD+R DL media inside your dvd burner ready and follow the steps I provided above. High quality media are genuine Taiyo Yuden (authentic Yuden is also the 8X DVD+R Fuji & Sony "Made In Japan"), Verbatim (MCC003 & MCC004) and the Maxell "Made In Japan". These are top notch media and you can't go wrong with them (please keep in mind to burn them at 4X if possible).

Alkohal, I tried to follow the directions but when I go to change book type, it does not list my brand of DVD player, I think IBM have Matshita DVD burner drives.
The media type for the DVD which is in question is DVD-R, When I put the disputed DVD in the burner and use DVD decryptor in write mode, it says the following information
MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-822S 1.61 (ATA)
Current Profile: DVD-ROM
Disc Information:
Status: Complete
Erasable: No
Sessions: 1
Sectors: 1,969,296
Size: 4,033,118,208 bytes
Time: 437:39:21 (MM:SS:FF)
Supported Write Speeds: 1x, 2x
Pre-recorded Information:
Manufacturer ID: PRINCO
Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):
Book Type: DVD-R
Part Version: 5
Disc Size: 120mm
Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified
Number of Layers: 1
Track Path: Parallel Track Path (PTP)

Track Density: 0.74 um/track
First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 2,165,903
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 0
When I click on read in DVD decryptor it shows the following screen.

@chuttko,
Seriously, I don't know much about your IBM Matshita dvd burner, so I can't really comment on this certain burner.
You can't book type a DVD-R disc period. You can change the book type on DVD+R or DVD+R DL media only. However, keep in mind to verify that you must have one of the burners that DVD Decrypter provided (i.e. Nu Tech, Plextor, LITE-ON/SONY, Ben Q, RICOH and NEC etc.)
Hopefully, this will makes more sense.

Doc,
Sorry for the late reply bro. but I did pm you back some minutes ago. Hopefully everything is clear in there alright. Let me know if you run into any issues ok. Just follow the steps I provided above and YES... choose the Lite-ON for our SONY Dru710A. Now just remember to "highlighted" Change For: Drive (DVD+r/+R DL Media - EEPROM!) and you'll be fine.
