it's not a P2P at all, it was around long before the www and will be around long after. mIRC is just a client for using IRC (internet relay chat). yes it's safe, pretty much the safest thing there is IMO, and stuff hits IRC long before it trickles down to the p2p's and torrents.
I tried playing around on mIRC and seems to be over my head. I also couldn't find any good guides on google or afterdawn. Do you know of any good links to guides? thanks.
nevermind I found one that looks good at ircspy. I'll do some studying this weekend and see if I can figure it out. again thanks
Safe? Please! Unless you use a complex string of Shell accounts and "anonymous" proxies, anyone who wants can see your ip #. You have to at the very least register for an account from undernet, or whatever server you want to use, just to mask your isp, which is otherwise broadcast to all users who /whois you. The "safest things there is" of course is usenet. At least it's better then crapazza, edipshit, or bittorrent crap, because with irc and usenet, kiddie jerkoffs aren't profitting off of the content of the hardworking scene through advert's and crap.
So, which programs to share data to you consider to be the safest and why? The reason I ask is because I've researched this for awhile and most people including moderators consider mIRC to be the best. My other question is when the RIAA or other organizations are sueing small time downlaoders which software/sharing programs were they using?
Thank you for anyone's knowledgable, respectful answers.(I don't want this to turn into a screaming match between intelligent people's opinions like it has on other threads)
who gives a royal rats ass if someone can get your IP? woooooo scary! things aint like they used to be on IRC, there are no more channel wars and takeovers and such. most networks offer vhosts anyway, and so what if someone can whois your IP, if you aint running a firewall on your end you deserve whatever happens to you. i hjave never used usenet and of course thats only YOUR opinion that it's the safest. all i know is i've been using IRC for 12 years now and i've leeched everything i've ever wanted and never once got any hassle for it. if you're wanting to upload tons of stuff then no there realkly aint nowhere that is totally safe, but if you just want to download then IRC is by far the safest thing you can do other than go buy the retail goods. but again thats just my opinion, which are like assholes, but i've never once been questioned about the tons of crap i've leeched.
Darthnip, "Safe" in this context means something along the lines of, "how easily can my identity be discovered". As far as IRC goes, the answer is, "very easily". And what do you think all these lawsuits are base on? RIAA jerkoffs culling IP numbers and blindly sueing.
IP # = your identity = possibility of being held culpable for your actions. Just because you haven't been hassled doesn't mean that IRC is therefore "safe". Like with any p2p service, the amount of users far outnumber the potential suers, so the odds are always in your favor. That certainly doesn't equal safety, in a technical sense at least.
well yeah it's a "gimme" that any of this has it's own version of "safe", the safest way is just to not do any of it. but in all my years of doing this i've heard way more about people getting busted on everything other than IRC. i think most of the ones that get busted are the ones doing the mass seeding or making 5 biullion songs available for people to grba of the P2P's. IRC is more of a "go in and grab" type of thing, i've never heard of 1 single person getting busted for downloading anything. that dont mean people dont get in trouble using it, just means i've heard more about the other methods getting nailed so thats what i base my opinion on.
