Hello,

I'm having troubles with burning Dual Layer DVDs. I've used DVDDecrypter to copy a movie on to my C: drive but I can't burn the movie on to my DVD-R DL disc. I've got a long list of Burning programs: Sonic, Nero, ImgBurn, Cheetah DVD, Sateria DVD and none of them seem to be able to copy it (the folder has .IFO, .VOB and .BUP files). I've got a NEC - 3530A drive (which supports DL). I no longer have the DVDs in possession, just on my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I know this is not much help, but in the future if you rip use Decrypter in iso mode and then open your mds file and use iso write mode for your dual layer. Decrypter handles dual layer burning better than any other program I have, but only using it this way, it gets the layer break correct. Since you ripped in file mode you can only use a program that will burn DVD files such as Nero. Decrypter and Imgburn only do iso files. Plus DVD -R dual layers are not as easy to burn to as the +R ones. Here is an excerpt from a thread over at ImgBurn from LUK on -R dual layer disks and burning.
Quote:
Here is an extract from the Mt. Fuji Command Manual for Multimedia Devices - Version 6.

QUOTE
4.17.4 Recording mode for DVD-R Dual Layer media
DVD-R Dual Layer media makes use of sequential recording as well as Single Layer discs. DVD-R Dual Layer media supports three kind of recording modes. They are Disc-at-Once (DAO) recording, Incremental recording, and Layer Jump recording. Once a recording mode is determined, the recording mode shall not be changed afterwards.

4.17.4.1 DAO recording
DAO recording is supported by DVD-R Dual Layer media by using Format 1 RMD. Lead-in through Lead-out is recorded in one recording action. The Middle Area on L0 and L1 may be recorded after Lead-out is written. The Layer Jump Address is fixed location and is not changeable.

When DAO recording is used, all unrecorded user Data Area shall be recorded. When the amount of user data to be recorded is less than the capacity of L0, the Shifted Middle Area may be used as an exceptional case.
You can either try Nero or another program that burns DVD Files or try and get the originals back and rerip in iso mode.

Thanks arniebear for your quick response.

The only reason I didn't read in ISO Mode is because it was my first time using DVDDecrypter (should have read the forums) and I am not sure if I read/write in ISO mode, whether it will play on normal DVD players.

I'll be sure to remember next time to do what you said.

Thank you :)

Sorry, I could not give you anymore info on resolving your current problem, other than to try in Nero. The problem with the -R is that they have a fixed layer break whereas with +R it can be calculated and changed, which Decrypter does very well. If your NEC is capable of booktyping then use +R dual layers it will make things easier in the future. Good luck :)

You have actually helped a lot :)

I'm off to the shops to get some +R DL discs and try again :) It's a pitty that DL discs are so expensive... It means it's only worth getting good movies :P

Thanks again for your help. I'll let you know how it all goes.

Hey UGBIT,

First, it is important that your burner's firmware is up to date. Determine what firmware you have and then go to the following site to see if there is a newer version and update if necessary.

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=23

Since you have DVD Decrypter you can get the firmware version. Decrypter will put up the drive name and firmware. The FW is the number after the burner name.

After updating, you can use Nero for the burn. Before you do you will need to make sure your burner will booktype the DL +9 as DVD-ROM so it will play in other players and drives.

Use DVD Decrypter and set the Mode to ISO -> Write.
Right click on the "Destination" burner box but not the dropdown arrow.
Select "Change Booktype...".
Click on the "NEC" tab
In the Change For dropdown menu select "Drive (for DVD +R DL Media)"
In the New Setting dropdown menu select "DVD-ROM"
Click the Change button.

Place the DL media in the drive.

In Nero select burn video files.
etc.

You can use DVD Decrypter as well. In the future rip as an iso file and then use DVD Decrypter to burn the media. Decrypter can only burn an iso image. There not much point of ripping into files if you want an exact copy.

BTW the best DL media is Verbatim. Many others like Memorex use Ritek D01 DL media. It's a bit more problematic as are all others.

Don't know where you live, but you can pick up Verbatim +R dual layers at the WalMart for 3 for 11.88, best disks you can use, IMHO.

Thanks laddyboy,

I updated my drive this morning. I checked out your link and it was the same one I did. :) I tried to do what you said in DVDDecrypter but when I change the Booktype to "DVD + R DL" it says it "failed", so I can't do the next step. I can't change any of the booktyping :/
Any ideas? Thanks for your help :)

arniebear,
I've got Verbatim DVD-R DL, It was the only DL discs they had in store (Australia) I'm sure I can find another place that sells +R though :) If not, I'll just wait for the computer fair that comes every weekend :P Out of the back of vans

Unfortunately, -R DL can't be booktyped so you'll have to take your chances that standalone players and other drives will be able to play the disk. Just use Nero and burn as usual.

Ah, I see.. Thanks anyway. I've booked marked this thread for when I get my hands on some DVD+R DL discs :)

Would you be able to point me in the right direction for a step by step guide to burning what I need to do, using Nero. I haven't really successfully used it before. (Tried to but always fail). I probably need an updated version of Nero or something.

Thanks for all your help :)

You may have to download some hacked firmware for your burner from another site in order to enable bitsetting for the +R media. This site is pretty good.

http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/

For your burner I'd probably use 1.03C(Liggy) as the firmware for the 3530.

Here is a basic guide for burning with Nero just open your files and go, I hope

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/burn%20with%20nero.pdf

Make sure you do have the most up to date Nero you can get, so it recognizes those disks.

Hi arniebear and laddyboy,

How are you? I thouhgt I might give an update of what's been happening. Well, I can't get any DVD-R DL discs to burn but I did get one DVD+R DL (1 out of 5 discs!!) to copy. The other 4 just stopped halfway, where the second layer starts. The discs are TDK so I thought that they would be good. I tried to use DVD Decrypter and read an ISO image, then write it back onto disc, but it stuffed up. At the moment I am just using DVD clone to copy dvd's on to DVD+Rs. I am hoping to get this DL stuff under hand so that I can put my knowledge into this thread. I've just got to wait until my next pay check comes so I can get some more DL discs :)

Cheers,

Burns hanging at the layer break are a pretty good indication that the firmware isn't handling the media well. That's been my experience over the past few months. My NEC 3500 would burn Verbatim fine but no other DL media. I finally upgraded to the NEC 3540 but even had to update the firmware again to get good burns from Ritek D01 media.

hmm, I see. Well I am going to the shops soon to get some more discs. They are very expensive to test burning on ($10) each! I'll update my firmware again and try and get some verbatim ones. I'll try one in DVD Decrypter and one in Nero 6. I'll let you know how it goes. I've got the NEC 3530A drive (brand new from Dell as I originally had the PHILLIPS 8630 drive and IT sucked!) :)

Hi laddyboy and arniebear,

I'm sorry for not updating this thread soon.... Exams for uni..

Anyway, I seem to have got a method worked out that hasn't failed yet for DL discs :) Thanks to you both.

Here is what I do..

1. Use DVD Decrypter to copy the DVD files to my C:\ (ISO images don't seem to work for me when I write in Decrypter)

2. Use Nero 6 in DVD-Video more (auto. booktyping) and copy the video_ts files into Nero's video_ts folder.

3. Put in my Blank Verbatim DVD+R DL discs ($5.50 each at comp. fair) and burn away. :)

The discs work perfectly in my lounge room LG DVD Player and is great 100% quality. My DVD player in the bedroom does not read them because I think it is too old :|

I only use DVD DL if the movie is too big to fit on DVD+R discs. ie, if I use CloneDVD and the quality would be less than 80%, I use DL and copy the whole DVD :)

Thank-you both for your help. I hope now I can help others like you helped me.

Cheers!

Hi ugbit,
Is there any advantage to using DVD Decrypter instead of DVD43 or AnyDVD? (which I use).
To me it seems easier to have AnyDVD working in the background while I use Nero to just copy and burn the discs?

For burning DL media (or 1:1 copy) I highly recommend DVD Decrypter instead of Nero. DVD Decrypter is the best, especially it handles the layers better.

Hi Friends,

I have been struggling to do the same (burn DVD+R DL) with no luck so far 4 coasters.... I have got Memorex 2.4 DVD+R DL and just got the Verbatim DVD+R DL from Officemax.

I have few full original DVDs on my PC and would like to get them on this DL disks. I have a successful failure using Nero so tried DVD Decrypter. I created ISO image using Nero Burning ROM and then used DVD Decrypter to burn the image - no luck. When I'm putting the disk in the Apex DVD player it detects the DVD disk but just won't go anywhere from there... Any info and help will be appreciated..

Thanks..

It is important that your burner is able to booktype the burned disk as a DVD-ROM for many players to recognize and play a DL disk.

What is the brand, model number, and firmware revision number for your burner?

Download DVD Identifer and see if the burned disk was booktyped as DVD-ROM. That'll tell you whether your burner is setup for booktyping.

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

When using DVD Decrypter to backup a DL disk:
1. set the mode to iso read and rip an iso image file.
2. set the mode to iso write and burn the ripped iso image.

The above leaves the layer breaks alone. Sometimes one plays with fire by ripping into files since eventually all must be recompiled into an iso image file anyway for burning.

Nero 6 doesn't always do a good job with layer breaks so using it can cause problems. If using Nero 6, the current version is 6.6.0.16.

In summary:
1. we need to determine whether the burned disk was booktyped as DVD-ROM.
2. If not, we need to determine whether your burner is capable of doing so; hence the need for model and firmware version.
3. we need to determine if your burner's firmware is up to date so that it knows how to burn the media.
4. use DVD Decrypter as described above.

I would not suggest trying to burn again until we've gotten the answers to some of the above questions and had a chance to determine whether any problems exist.

Thanks for the response.

I have a notebook "Acer Aspire 5000" that is where I burned my DL disks as I don't have any other DL writer. This is what it says in Nero InfoTool about my DL drive:
Name = Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-833S
Firmware Version = VRS2
Type = DVD +/-R/+/-RW DL Recorder

I will assume that the drive can booktype to DVD-ROM b.coz I can burn single layer disks without any issues.

I already have files on thie notebook so I used Nero Burning ROM to make an ISO image and then I used DVD Decrypter to burn that ISO image.

Thanks....
