could it be possible that the fact the microsoft left out they addition of blu-ray for the time being was simply to get the console out asap and to sell it for as cheaply as possible. we know that if they were to use blu-ray or even hd-dvd that the chances of the console being released pre-2006 would have been hindered. what may happen in the near future, maybe even around the ps3 launch is that microsoft will produce an external blu-ray or hd-dvd device to allow gamers to get the full potential out of their console and take away disc swaps. this would also create more money for microsoft as they will have their fan base well setup by this stage and know that the majority of users would consider purchasing such a peripheral. just a thought.

Not the Blu-ray.
Microsoft completely backs HD DVD as the new DVD medium.

Microsoft couldn't use blu-ray anyway because sony has put a copyright on blu-ray making it unable for other companies to use it, and Microsoft has said that theyy may incorporate hd-dvd readers in futre versions of the X360.
Hope that has let people know what is happening now.

2qu1ck is right but PLEASE can everyone remember that it's not how much a boring disc can hold but how well the games play and how good the features are of a console that matter.

they arent gonna do that the closest thing i would see them doin is making an hd dvd reader as an accessory, something like the hdd, where u can prob buy it and attach it via usb. I dunno if they will tho, all it would do is be able to read hd dvd movies, they wouldnt use it for games

Relax!!! The HD DVD reader would be only good to view HD DVD Movies, not to play HD DVD games. So, it's a posibile that if the HD DVD movie market grows enough, MS may release an XBOX 360 with HD DVD movie playback capabilities.

Is'nt the blueray made by sony?
I think that sony dindt give blueray to m$ because sony and M$ are rivals.
Ps3 will have advantage, since that xbox360 games wont hold enough enough capasity for their games. What i've read from previos forums that gta already gotten to 9gb. Thats already a disk right?

but there's Quad Layer DVD discs as well. so then they've got no problems with disc size, and GTA isn't 9GB. most games are around 4.14 or so because they're on DVD5 there are some that are on dvd9 but then you've got dvd18 which is dvd9 on a reversible disk. besides, they could use 2 dvd9's or dvd5's for pennies on the dollar compared to what sony would charge for the blu-ray, besides look at sony and ps1 w/ driver and driver 2 and MGS all were 2 discs.
2 discs isn't that big of a problem.
Quake 4 is 2 discs, but one is the bonus content like Quake 2 and making of Quake 4/
DVD Breakdown, thanks to videohelp.com
The DVD sizes can be a bit confusing. There are basicly 4 different DVD Sizes,
DVD-5, holds around 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.37 computer GB where 1 kbyte is 1024 bytes* . DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW supports this format. Also called Single Sided Single Layered. This is the most common DVD Media, often called 4.7 GB Media.
DVD-10, holds around 9 400 000 000 bytes and that is 8.75 computer GB. DVD+R/DVD+RW and DVD-R/DVD-RW supports this format. Also called Double Sided Single Layered.
DVD-9, holds around 8 540 000 000 bytes and that is 7.95 computer GB. DVD+R supports this format. Also called Single Sided Dual Layered. This media is called DVD-R9, DVD-R DL, DVD+R9, DVD+R DL or 8.5 GB Media.
DVD-18, holds around 17 080 000 000 bytes and that is 15.9 computer GB. DVD+R supports this format. Also called Double Sided Dual Layered.
* In the computer world is 1 KB data = 1024 bytes so 4 700 000 000 bytes / 1024 = 4 589 843KB / 1024 = 4482MB / 1024 = 4.37GB. See section 3.3 in the DVDDemystified FAQ here.

besides this just reminds me of all the bull that occurred w/ laserdisc and DivX discs. they flopped due to extreme costs.
if you don't rememeber laser disc they were the size of a record, and DivX, well that's just like it's own little flop because it was a specific format for a specific player, really not good when it comes to consumers at least not for studios stand point, they will more then likely back HD-DVD because it's over-all cheaper and uses exsisting technology, and is cheaper to manufacture, if say, paramount backs blu-ray and hd-dvd then they have to print 2 different formats, which will be a hastle.

if it becomes standard, more then likely my guess would be M$ would have some sort of obligation, but then again if u have the extended plan M$ offered then it wouldn't matter, it'd be free.

i really couldnt give a shit about swapping disc..never bothered me with final fantasy 7 or anything.. anyways whats the craic with companys not making better compression tools rather than always expanding the media..its pure fecking laziness.. something like dvd video can be compressed down by 50% using ratDVD without quality loss..why couldnt something like this be created for gaming where the decrpyter is on the hard drive.. simple idea!

All in all this Disc issue that the PS3 fans are using as a trump card is a load of bull. A big reason why is bacause they know that a good game is worth getting regardless of wether you have to swap the disc over or not which is why they bought Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Gear Solid. Besides Microsoft will come up with compresion ideas.

OK, one problem im having with ff8. There is a difference. FFVIII is 3gb. Thats like 1 ps2 game. And for a ps1, that would be extreemly long. 20 mb was a long game for the n64. All ff7 players would know that ff7 was an extreemly long game. Now we take xbox 360 games, and they would be like a normal game (in leinght) but many disks.

3GB isn't to much for one disc...and who cares about switching discs, you only do it when you beat everything on the first one...and Microsoft isn't dumb they'll find compression tools i bet.

Microsoft has said they will incorporate the HD-DVD in future version but will not make games in that format. That would exclude all previous 360's. As for Blu-Ray, Microsoft is not going to give in to Blu-Ray because Sony owns it. Similar to why scumbag Apple will not incorporate wma files into the ipod.
So even though blu-ray may hold more, it will go the way of the betamax I am sure. Sony wants a monopolistic control over the system rather than a group of companies like with most other formats. So go HD-DVD. It is far more user friendly from what I have read. They are not going to have as much limitations on it as with the Blu-Ray as far as copying and so on.

free and microsoft?... not a chance mate... the most likely thing to happen if it even comes to it...games will be released in to formats.. dvd and hd-dvd.. much like the way games on PCs are released in a single dvd format or in a few CDs format..
