Hello everyone!
Ive had it with the bloody DVD burners and DVE media.
This is the second time Im posting regarding Burn process failure in Nero.

My specifications to begin with:
1. Pentium 4 3.2GHz, 512MB Ram
2. Windows XP professional
3. Nero (version 7.0.12)
4. DVD burner: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4120B>Version: A117 (latest)

Ive been having problems with several DVD-R media. Firstly with Creation (DVD-R, 8x), then TDK (DVD-R, 8x) (with previously Nero error, PMA UPDATE FAILURE). I thought I solved that by updating the firmware and secondly changing the media to Maxell DVD-R (1-8x). However, this time, lucky me I get a beautiful error AGAIN! Yes AGAIN!!! I say that again... AGAIN!!! (Im pissed off!)...
When I tried to burn a DVD movie.
Here is the log of Nero.
And finally what I would really appreciate to know is WHICH media is reliable for burning?? Which one? because Ive used 3 brand names and I get errors everywhere!!!
Here is the log:

Your cry for help doesnt tell us anything. What speed are you burning at? Did you mess with any of the settings of your burn software? What software are you using? Man instead of crying your story how about telling us your problem? Specifically your process.

Nice reply!!!! Thanks!!

Well like I said Ive been trying to burn a DVD movie to a number of DVD-R media and I constantly getting error during the burning process.

I said before that Im using Nero 7.0.1.2 and Ive already updated the drive (firmware) before (Ive this problem 2 weeks now).
Ive tried to burn at 4x and also 8x on DVD-R media that support both speeds.
Also Ive been using both types of + and - DVD-R media. What Ive noticed is that my burner works fine with DVD+R discs and not with DVD-R (i was advised to use DVD-R). Anyway...
The errors Ive been getting with various media (Creation, TDK and Maxell DVD-R) are :

1. PMA update failure (could not create disc at once)
and now i get The: Focus or tracking error
D: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4120B
. I have posted the log... so if you know how to help the log explains everything right mate?

Now Im using Maxell DVD-R (1-8x) and I tried to burn at 4x and 8x.
I have not messed around with the settings of my burner. I never mess around with things Im not sure about. Thats why Im asking you guys for help.
Ive asked advice in this forum before and I got help. I thought I solved the problem but it continues everytime with a different Nero error (see above).
Thats all... my problem is general, ie I dont know which media are good for burning. And the reason is that Ive tried many brands and every single one has created me with an error during burning.

Did you get a clearer picture now of what the problem is?
If you can help, thats fine and I thank you for that. But I would appreciate to leave the nasty comments ok?
Thats all for now..
Read the log and tell me your opinion not your critisism (thanks)

See ya

Aleka hi :)

Physical Memory 510mb

free Physical Memory 101mb
you could do with freeing up a bit more memory (close a few progs whilst burning)
Quote:
Disc Manufactuer RITEKG05
media is fine
Quote:
Burn speed 8x
could be a tad slower, try 4x max, less chance of errors

other good media, in fact the only other media i would use beside my RITEK would be Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim
i know very little about Nero (so can't help a lot there), but i would give DVDDecryter or ImageBurn a try

hope this helps a little

Hmmm still a big fuzzy, it seems that +R disk work but -R dont ok maybe your drive is +R as -R's are completely different and dont work in +R drives (remember beta and vhs same concept) as for burning speed I never ever exceed 2x and sometime with crappy media I burn at 1x this gives me a near 100% success rate with 0 pixilations errors. This error you get pma, do you have any burner software in memory. Easy cd creator software comes with a driver that helps you burn on the fly however this software causes errors with programs that also want to make burns on their terms. Use msconfig to see what is loading or do a ctrl+alt+delete (taskmanager) and see what is running in memory. Make sure no weird programs are running that might interfer with decrypter or shrink etc. This is always a good idea for anything your running. I would also check to see if you have the xcp virus from sony which stops copying of copyprotected cd's and DVD's. Unfortunetly you cannot remove the virus unless you have mcaffee antivirus.

Hello again and thank you both for the advice.

When I burn, I always have all programms closed (antivirus also). The pc Im using for DVD copying is not connected to internet so.. in terms of viruses is clean.

Well, it seems that my burner is only supporting DVD+Rs because yesterday I bought 2 DVD+R (Brand: Intenso, you probably never heard of it, right?)and I copied the DVD just fine.

The media I buy support all speeds from 1x to 8x. Ive tried with every single brand to burn at the lowest speed possible. But with no luck.

Yesterday a strange thing happened.
I tried once more to burn a DVD movie to Maxell DVD-R at 8x (because at 4x speed the burning process failed) and it burned the DVD-R up to 95% and then the usual message poped up: Burn process failed at 8x.

Is this possible?

It seems that my burner doesnt mind about - DVDrs, sometimes it burns the discs sometimes doesnt.
I think the best thing to do is to stick to DVD+Rs and see what happens.

Megabyte 2 the only software I have installed is Nero 7.0.12. And when Im about to burn a DVD disc I make sure nothing runs in the background. The only programm that runs together with DVD Shrink is AnyDVD, because I previously had problems reading DVD discs (had to change area and so on). I dont think that AnyDVD takes up considerable physical memory. Also in the task manager the CPU usage is always 1-2% when my pc is not doing anything.. indicating that nothing major runs in the background depleting it of memory. Am I right?

Well, conclusion: I'll stick with DVD+R and Im sure that I wont have problems. If not, I know guys where to find you!
Thanks again for all the advice
Take care
Alex

Ok glad to see you tracked it down to the +r solution. Last bit you can probably return the -r's as this is a common mistake. You can also use +RW's when testing to save on disks. Remember to slow down your burn process with Nero its in the last box that comes up right before the burn last tab under speed. Slower is better. Happy burning.

I have a DVD-RW which Im going to test now, out of curiosity. If it burns it fine (always the lowest speed I can use is 4x), then Im going to be really puzzled.
And the reason is that the + DVDR always burn fine (also the ones I bought yesterday, the Intenso DVD+RW were fine). If it does not burn the DVD-RW, the problem is down to the +/- discs and ofcourse to the burner.
Can I ask something else? Where can I see if my burner is + or minus specification? From device manager maybe? Im new to the DVD burners and my father bought the PC from a company that take the parts, build it and testing it so I do not know the specifications of the hardware they used to build it.

I have build a PC myself before and I know all the hardware I used and never had problems, but with the one that has the DVD burner, have no clue. I can always ask the person that provided my father with the PC, but out of curiosity i would like to know.
Thanks again! And I hope this time I will have a happy burning!
Take care

Your log said there was a hardware error, this is probably the burner, is your firmware up to date? The burner could be dead, can you try it in another PC?
Focus or tracking error is another pointer to your burner being dead! The plus format is a more stable & reliable format, I only use 4x +RW Traxdata discs (made by Ricoh). I have always had probs with the dash format, so I stuck with what I found most reliable.
Not the best welcome megabyte2!

Well sorry dude, but I like everyone can make alot of noise but what does that solve. Just tell me and others the problem and we will solve it. No sense in getting emotional. Also why would anyone cry and not say anything. Help me help me im having trouble disk wont copy. Now help me??? How can you help someone who doesnt help himself? Sorry I left my mind reading hat at the office. Hey maybe it was strong language but I also dont like anyone using all caps in the title. I find that quite unexcusable and thus will be yelled at in kind.

megabyte2,

Calm down, I agree with you in principle, however, in case you hadn't noticed the attitude HERE is to JUST to help people no matter what specifics, or lack of them, they have given about their problem, or not.

Actually, "Aleka" was much more informative than most "NEWBIES", so I personally have to give him alot of credit.

BTW, this post was/is not intended to start a flame war with you, for I have the greatest respect for you, and have seen many a post that, in fact, has helped me.

And BTW, "pulsar" made one little comment that was not, IMHO, flame directed.....just a simple comment on how we all should all act here, particularly those that have more experience than others.

So let's all be friends, we are all here to help one another.

Best regards,

Rich

Pulsar my burner firmware is up to date. If you see the first message I sent I have written down all details. I have also no trouble burning normal CD-R discs.

Now In terms of the crying out help. Well, Im sure that everyone, sometimes loses her/his patience, especially with machines and technology. And this happes if you try anything by yourself and you get nothing.

Megabyte's response wasnot very polite. I dont mean to tell people off. I have no problem with anyone and like sytyguy said, we are all here to try to help one another. By talking nasty we dont help... right?

Thanks sytyguy, I know I've been informative and also I am female and you know how females are with pcs right? In my case, though Ive spend hours and hours, solving problems that sometimes come across, even building my own pc out of scratch. So I believe that for a girl this is a lot! Dont you think?

Anyway, no hard feelings! :)
Thank you all for the help!

Thanks sytyguy for the link! I'll check it out! :)

Take care guys :)
Alex

You know Pulsar, the other thing I could do is:

My father has another pc at his office with exatcly the same DVD burner (LG-DT-HL DVDRAM GSA-4120B) which is brand new.
I'll test one of the DVD-R discs that do not work with the DVD burner I have at home.
If it burns ok on the same DVD burner model, then it seems that my DVD burner (at home) is slowly dying! I cannot explain it.
From the specifications I see that it supports all types + and - and it should have worked ok with the Maxell DVD-R (1-8x).
The last thing I'll do it to move it to the other pc I have at home (I have 2 pcs at home) and try burning the same Maxell discs.
If it burns fine, well there might be a software conflict. And I dont know if I can solve it. I might leave the burner in the pc that works.
Well, I dont want to cause you any headache!!! :) So I'll stop here!
Thank you very much again for all the help!
I thank everybody
See ya guys!

Aleka,

Oops, sorry for assuming you were a male. Your knowledge of pc's surpasses most women, so it was a natural assumption, albeit, an ignorant assumption.

Anyway, personally I would attempt a burn with DVD Decrypter, I believe it could be Nero, or some configuration setting like scaling times were incorrect, which should be set it to Automatic, or perhaps some other setting.

Give Decrypter a shot, worse that can happen is another coaster. If you need help on Decrypter help is right here from many of us.

Good luck,

Rich

Aleka,

Another thought, I just looked at your Nero run again, and it had almost completed, so run DVD Shrink with DVD Decrypter, and in Shrink select Edit--->Preferences, and change to "Custom", and type in "4100", and I betcha it will work.

Good luck,

Rich

@megabyte2 - not a very polite welcome at all; just don't reply to threads if you don't like them. (nothing wrong with this one though, in fact it's more detailed than most threads i see). As for telepathy, with Nero logs we don't need any. The answers are all there. Whether we can solve all the problems and get someone up and burning a storm is another matter, but Nero logs are very informative so most of the work is done for us.

@Aleka - my buddy gurnard summed up the logfile exactly as i would have.

sometimes we get the odd burner that likes dash or plus format only and doesn't like the other, but i don't think we ever get to the bottom of things like this. Your Nero log, apart from what gurnard pointed out, is spotless, so it's always possible your burner's past it's sell-by date

Well I just subtracted all the patience when the thread starter used all caps which is a pet peeve. Anything after that falls into the IRS audit/traffic ticket pissed off mode. But seeing as this is christmas ive gone into more patience mode. However Sony ruined that with their virus xcp so now im in normal mode. I guess its burnout from being a computer repairman and seeing all the crazy problems. You know the questions like where is the powerbutton and why cant I find the "press any key to continue key". If I had a dollar for every I dont know whats wrong with it and I didnt do anything differently to get this formated hard drive.

Guys thanks a lot for being so helpful.
Listen now what I did this afternoon.
I went to my father's office. The pc there has the same DVD burner I have at home. Exactly the same model. Though is brand new.
I converted a DivX movie to DVD format and I used the same DVD-R discs I had problem with at home (Maxell DVD-R 1-8x).
The DVD movie was burned fine!
This pointed out the possibility that my burner is either dying slowly (which I cannot understand since it burns fine normal CD-Rs) or some sort of software conflict while running Nero 7.0.1.2.

I went home and the first thing I did was to move the "faulty" DVD burner to the other pc.
Again I converted a DivX movie to DVD and attempted to burn it again on the same Maxell disc. And It worked! The burner that was previously causing problems and wasting my blank DVD-R's burned just fine! It also worked with a previous version of Nero (6.0)(but I dont think that matters.
Anyway... this I cannot explain. But there's definately something wrong with the software running or installed in the other pc (my sister uses it!!!)
I think Im going to format it and install everything fresh! Best solution.
Well thats all for now!
Thanks a lot for everything!

As for some certain people that they get annoyed with messages of despare, because sometimes when you've tried everything and nothing worked. you reach this point, I dont mind. They can reply as they wish.
Well, Im off!! Take care!
Alex

P.S. And yes, Im a female and pc's is my hobby. I try to learn more and more everyday. And everyday you learn something new. Like I did these days with your help ofcourse!

See ya!

Aleka, I noticed that you are using the version 7 of nero. Would it be possible to roll back to version 6.0.18? Or did you have these problems before?
I am a little sceptical as to the reliability of the latest Nero version.

PS Aleka, welcome to Afterdawn. Nice a to see a young lady involved in computing. We have a girl at work who went go-kart reacing with all the lads. She TOTALLY kicked ALL their asses! Nice one, I thought!

@Aleka - your reply reminded me of something i missed. dvd burners apparently have 2 lasers, one for CD's and one for DVD's....so your burner could well be hinting at you that it wants to be retired from active duty, bless it..

I used Nero 6.0.18 before and thats when the problems started right out of the blue!
The DVD burner now is on the pc Im using now and I've already burned a DVD movie just fine like I said before. I dont think that the software causing the problem is Nero 7.0.12.

Well I'll keep that in mind.
BUT... you see, when I moved the burner to this pc (the pc Im using now), it burned just fine! No errors whatsoever!
How do you explain that?

Oops! I thought my message was not added (Im a newbie you see and I got a message saying that I can post only after every 3 mins). Sorry for repeating myself!
