nero7 recode/vision conversion of avi files to ipod format

i have been able to make ipod movies (e.g., they actually play on the ipod, not just in itunes) using recode 2 and the nero digital format starting from dvd or vob files (the posts at afterdawn have been invaluable), but not from avi files. is there a way to work with avi files as input in recode 2 directly? i don't see how to do this. convering avi to dvd/vob format for use in recode 2 is a workaround but increases the workflow considerably.

on the nero vision side of things, i have made functional dvds and vob files from avi files, but have not been able to find settings that allow functional ipod movies. has anyone accomplished this, and if so, what settings to use? i have tried to use similar settings as with recode 2 that work with recode 2, but apparently something is amiss. these files, regardless of extension name, load onto the ipod but don't start (work fine in itunes).
