I have both the Canon IP3000 AND IP4000 the IP4000 has the advantage with the photo black. Here in the US none of the Canon models will print disc straight out of the box but are easily modified to do so.The IP3000,IP4000,IP5000 are all discontinued the new models are IP4200,IP5200 etc.You can still find the IP3000,IP4000 and IP5000 on Ebay.I would recomend trying to get the discontinued IP3000,IP4000,IP5000 because they do not use chiped cartriges so ink is much cheaper. The Epson R series is another option it prints disc straight out of the box.

Hope that helps.

I got the epson r-200 and it does a pretty good job on disc covers, and super for dvd case covers. My downloaded case dvd covers look better than original!

Epson also has the r-220/r-300/r-320/r-340. The 300 series has some fancier extras like card reader/and viewscreen.

The r-200 is around $80-$100
The r-220 is replacing the r-200 and is about $100
Staples had the r-320 on sale for $130 after rebate the last 3 weeks.

I'm considering getting a discontinued Canon IPx000 series printer because the ink cartridges can be had for USD$0.99 a piece from http://www.megatoners.com, which makes it the best bang/buck, IMO. The Epson refills are USD$2.25 which kills any savings had from the lower printer cost than the IPx000 printers. However, I've not heard of this "chiped" cartidge you speak of. What is it?

I've been looking at the ip4000 printer and have read a lot about it on these forums.
My only question is in with regards to its disc printing abilities.
None of the online literature says anything about a disc tray or disc printing abilities.
WIll I have to mod this in some way to get it to print on discs, or is it good to go straight from the box?

If it's the North American model it will have to be modified.
Modification consists of :
1.Remove the plasic blocking piece which prevents the insertion of the cd tray.
2.Modify the printer set-up to allow CD printing to be offered as a printing choice. This consists of pressing the buttons in sequence in service mode and is a one time deal.
3.Buying or building a tray that will be inserted into the printer whenever a cd is to be printed.

1 and 2 are trivial, however if the printer has been fired up and installed on the PC before step 2, the registry has to be modified. This is a simple process and does not require any advanced tinkering.

The third part, the tray, depends on whether you want to pay outrageous prices on Ebay or make one for $1.
I make them from DVD cases with a utility knife and a straight edge.

Same as Saugmom but have R300 bought direct from Epson for $99 refurbished with a $20 rebate and free shipping. Love mine and it does a amazing job on my discs also. I get my ink not at epson but private.abacus24-7. Would check epson site for what they now have. got mine around 3 months ago. R200 or 300 i would suggest. Does a awesome job on photos and regular printing. Most printers are ink hogs in my opinion but with substitute ink it brings it within reason for cost.Just my opinion

For the best high quality covers and disc labels one will ever possibly find, visit http://www.generetic.org/forum.html

For $20 a year, its money well well spent. Custom covers that will blow your socks off and custom covers for disc sets you simply can't find anywhere else.

saugmon is right...........covers.to

have great covers & their FREE.

I also have the Epson R300, GREAT results,

using w/ Verbatim hub printable -R's.

Saugmon, you said your covers look better than the originals.

What paper are you using for the outside covers ? I'm just using normal legal size copying paper( 8 1/2 X 14 in.)

They look pretty faded. Images are fine, but I know it's because of the paper.

What's a good paper ?, would be nice to find something matte, or glossy finish.
