Although, the pentium D processor looks like it could give the AMD 64 a good run for its money. It can support 64 bit OS and seems to me that its intels main rival to the AMD 64. Pretty expensive though.

I agree with the whole AMD thing here. I had a P4 3.4ghz a while back and it was not as good as even my old AMD 64 3200+ (in my opinion). Plus the P4's get much hotter. Apologies if I'm just repeating what everyone has already said here!

By the way Pulsar......do you really have a gixxer 750?
Biking is my other passion you see! Although I'm a Kawasaki man myself (1996 ZX-7R Ninja).

My rig: Intel Q9650 3.0Ghz, ATI Radeon 4870 X2 2048Mb, 6Mb DDR2 6400 RAM, Asus Rampage Formula X48 Motherboard.

Had a 98 GSXR 750, 'til someone nicked her a couple of years ago. We went to the South of France in 2000 & across northern Germany in 2001. I loved that bike. I love the South of France. Monaco rocks!
I prefer Suzukis, she loved to headshake & I loved it when she did!

My mate has a 2000 gixxer 750. It's pretty nice but I find them way too common these days so have opted for my classic Ninja 750 superbike. Sure it's a bit heavier but I've outcornered many a newer and lighter bike and I can still get 170mph down the straight at Brands Hatch. Just wish I could afford more trackdays! Sorry to go off topic guys!

Here's my other expensive toy! And me looking rather silly!

I can not understand why everyone keeps going on about AMD's being overly better for games than Pentiums (Benchmarks don't mean much it?s how it performs that matters), i have to say that i had no problems gaming with my last P4 (1.6ghz) and my current P4 (3ghz) in fact they have be outstanding in my view. Isn?t it the Gfx card & RAM that makes the real difference rather than the CPU?

aye aye man

Hey P4,

You are right in the sense that your GPU is the most important piece of hardware for 3d intensive programmes. But saying that, the GPU still has to interface with the CPU. This becomes all more important when using Sli mode, as two GPU's increase the CPU's workload and some games you get a CPU bottleneck where the GPU's end up waiting for the CPU to do it's part. I'm by no means an expert but this is how it was explained to me and I think I understood it correctly.

It was meant to be my Arnie pose......although I don't ever remember Arnie having nobbly white knees!! Hey if you can't laugh at yourself then what's the point of it all eh!

By the way what's the difference with these Pentium 'Extreme' editions? A friend of mine tells me they kill all AMD's even the FX-57...which I just cannot believe.

@ dan, I am my own worst critic, to a point where people tell me not to be too hard on myself. Laughter is without doubt the best medicine!

the gaming point in AMD's favour is more to do with what goes on in the space not just about drawing it, for example AI and a bit of physics. The athlons have more parallel pipelines than the P4's, and deal with the multitasking better.

I think tomshardware do some benches of the extreme edition and how it does really well in DivX and other HT threaded stuff to beat athlons.

http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20040419/cpu-scaling-09.html

Looks like the P4s do very well at encoding and decoding again in XMPEG and "Syntrillium Cool Edit Pro" (40% faster than an AMD). branch predictions?

I reckon that at 2.9 the FX53 should have wiped the floor with the EE but still..

Maybe they refer to the prices on the Toms hardware link?
