yo drchips,
you are such a jackass...why would you want a separate post stop for newbies. Maybe they need help from someone who know advanced stuff...anyway they only thing that makes someone and expert at this is posting a lot of messages.....wow....you must be a complete loser if you sit at your computer any type messages into this website about your opinions that no one cares about. So maybe you should stop thinking that you are better than the newbies and give them some help

SLCjunk: You're the type of faggot who makes drchips post threads like this. You have no arguement and it is all personal opinion. drchips has been very helpful to AD and knows a lot. The only reason he posted this to begin with is he's been around long enough to watch the stupid, already answered posts be answered over and over. If anyone here is a jackass it is you, for not understanding things and still posting your opinion. I will not say it does not matter, because I will not sink to your level, but don't be an idiot. Also if you wish to insult a particular member, PM him/her. Do NOT publicly insult the member.

DRChips appears to have left this forum. It is a great shame to all concerned, the bloke was top notch & gave excellent advice to many members & newbies alike, hence his membership status.
It really is a pity that he can't reply to your post, it would have been great fun reading it. M8 you wouldnt have lasted 5 minutes in his company.
Looking for my old AD

Are people still replying to this thread.
Sad to hear that Drchips is not kicking around as much. Hopefully he is just on holiday.
I think this topic has been more or less answered and even further investigated with Dela`s thread.

What the hell happend to this thread??? Geez I was opposed to the idea since day one but the animosity is definitely not required nor appropriate here. Im gone for a couple dozen posts and come back to a bloody war? lol c'mon people, let's be a tad more civilized oki? :)
Quote: This site has probably got the best forum around and we all ask stupid questions in are life at some point. The thing is you do not get an answer to a stupid question normally unless the person who replies is either stupid as well or very tollerant and enjoys answering the same questions as there glad to be of a help.I do see your point but I feel we want people to join the forum and not be scared away.
Very well said!
Quote: To me a forum is compsed of three elements: The learners, The Mods and The experienced that we all draw off to achieve our aims.
The quality of the social interaction is very important to a Newbie but he/she is there to learn and if that means being put into a room saying that is where they should post first until they know a bit more I don't think they will mind; after all you don't want to go to the pub with your college professor on your first day.
Indeed,
Those two points right there have summed of the core of Afterdawn -- a place for all to come and share knowledge and explore new options and avenues and techniques. I think a good balance for the forum is to have a room dedicated for newbies rather than to have newbies 'forced' into that room. That way newbies that want to learn (and contrary to the posts ive seen as a Mod they do exist) can learn in one compact area where, realistically, the majority of the "answerers" are the people who care to put some time into the response and help the newbie out.
Good call on the pub/professor relationship, the forum is very much of a similar relationship: we all come here as nobodies regardless of what we actually know and as we gradually post here and there, other posters around you will get a feel for our online personality, interests and expertise and deeper, more informative/directed responses will be given/recieved by other members. Its just like any community -- one doesnt simply walk in and expect everyone to drop everything and wait on his or her every need -- ok you can think so and thats fully your right but that would be a foolish assumption.
SLCjunk
There was no reason for your original comment and you know it. One doesnt expect courtesy and respect if one isnt prepared to give some out to start with. That's a starter -- and dont think I'm disagreeing with your overall idea -- read the posts again, I was a opposed to the idea from the start -- and I'm a Mod, I can do damn near whatever the fuck I want -- but I still respected the other parties involved. Let's have a look at your post:
Quote: you are such a jackass
In all fairness you know there was no reason to drop the maturity level of this thread with that comment. I'll not say it anymore, you know what I mean.
Quote: ...why would you want a separate post stop for newbies. Maybe they need help from someone who know advanced stuff
I agree entirely and if you read my posts you can confirm that for yourself.
Quote: ...anyway they only thing that makes someone and expert at this is posting a lot of messages
Just so that nobody else has the same misunderstanding, as for the ranking system here at Afterdawn, Senior Member and Addicts are hand selected by Mods and Admins (reccommended by the mods, promoted by the admins) -- and I'll tell you that the quantity of posts and rate at which people post are absolutely inconsequential -- its the quality of the posts: how much detail does that member give, how does (s)he follow up on further questions, respect for other members, adherence to the rules etc. It just so happens most of the Seniors/Addicts are dedicated enough to post a lot of posts as well but the coincidence stops there.
Quote: .....wow....you must be a complete loser if you sit at your computer any type messages into this website about your opinions that no one cares about
Well in all fairness you did stop here and post your opinion too -- which all fairness anyone else could say "no on cares about". This comment, unlike your previous two (which were good points) was quite unneccesary.
Quote: So maybe you should stop thinking that you are better than the newbies and give them some help
See my point about the Senior/Addict members. :)
Hunter007
Although SLCJunk might have been out of line with his initial post here, there's no reason to keep the level of this debate/discussion at that level. Name calling and fingerpointing gets nobody anywhere real fast.
SLCjunk
Regarding your second-last, post,
Quote: wow....you people need to chill out and stop being so defensive....but the brian guy is cool
Stop and think about it for a moment: you enter the thread, read through it and start naming calling and throwing insults around? In all fairness the other people here have every right to be defensive. Like I've said before, I understand your position entirely and actually agree with your more relevant points however nobody will listen to you and your ranting if all you are going to do is drop the maturity level of the forum down with your posts.
Stop and reread the posts again if you care to (read mine especially) -- I was (and still am) vehamently opposed to the idea however not once did I toss an insult around to convey my dissatisfaction with the idea. If you could be a tad more civilized with your posts, that would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Whole post Preator, lots said, I hope you took a deep breathe. Was surprised you didn`t just close this one, but some of the comments on this topic are interesting.
On the topic of this this thread, I think the whole point of this forum is for Newbies to get answers. If people really want to avoid bad posts, just dont read them.

Nah, always I try to reason with people first and explain that ok, they can disagree but they certainly cant go around disrespecting people left and right -- this is a good thread and even though i disagree with its purpose, i can accept it as a valid argument ('sides nobody can say i didnt give 'free speech' hehe) .... I'm fair ... brutally fair.

It is true that I shouldn't have overreacted the way I did. The only reason I was so defensive was because of the post SLCjunk made. Those kinds of posts are what make members post threads such as drchips. He is gone, unfortunatly and the thread is dead.

Hi Everyone, I wasn't aware that DrChips had left the building. I have been in the service business for over 35 years now. 25 years with General Electric, then after they down sized I became a service manager for a smaller company and at the same time I am a technical advisor for another company. After that many years I tend to think I know many things about everything. Then I met DrChips on here. After posting with him and getting to know him better just from on here, I realize how much I don't know. I am just a grain of sand on the beach compared to what that man knows. This forum lost a excellent member when he left. Anyone that discredits him didn't know him at all. My 2 cents worth.

Well, I disagree with drchips original suggestion.
Newbies are the ones with all the questions! If a question is too dumb or vague, or posted in wrong section, it gets ignored.
I don't miss drchips, he was very rude to me. He uses a distinct over-abundance of words and his flowery prose drips with unwarranted superiority.
Quote: I think "Drchips dumbo" has rather a nice ring to it.
Well I didn't say it...
Quote: Dr chips - Your obvious debating skills are without doubt excellent. I have no doubt that I would easily lose a war of words with you
brian100, don't say this. You are mistaking a lack of conciseness for having skill with words.

OGS, the open type format of this forum allows for debate and disagreement between ALL members if done properly. Almost any subject can be posted or question asked as long as its legal. My original post to this thread was actually negative towards DrChips suggestion. However, because I disagreed with him doesn't give me the right to try and cut him down in any way.
As to your statement about NEWBIE posts being ignored for being too dumb, vague or posted in the wrong place. Thats totally false for the majority of members on here. Most members will go the extra yard to help Newbies with problems no matter how small or simple they are. I always look for these type posts first and when giving answers I try to keep the answer simple and easy to understand also. Not too many other forums give you the freedom this one does and members like DrChips become the backbone of the forum over time.
Whatever problem you have with him I'm sure nothing I say will change your mind but it would have been to your benefit to have sent him a PM and try to straighten out any problems and then you would have received some of the best help possible from this site.

Hiya Guys and Gals,
I ain't dead (to the chagrin of some, I suspect !LOL!).
I have been away working on a project that has now completed its current phase.
Due to the nature of the working conditions I was denied the ability to post (though I have been able to lurk).
To echo one of Dela's statements:Quote: Damn this forum has changed! but not too much........
Blood on the ground.
Bodies strewn about..
Moaning and groaning in the background...
Looks like I missed a bit of fun ;-o
To all those who expressed concern over my apparent emulation of "Lord Lucan", I thank you.
To those who took the diametrically opposite stance, I present to you a BIG GRIN and a WINK. !LOL!
Praetor:
I will be a good boy, promise :-)
Nobody will get "bitch-slapped" (unless of course they are really pushing for it - Ooooh no.. must be good... must control myself... no bloodletting... )
To those who don't know me yet, Hiya...
I'M BAAAACK.
Have Fun...

This has grown into a very long and passionate thread.
What is the improvement you expect when you restrict Newbies from starting 'advanced' threads? Will it make the forum more interesting for the majority of AD members/visitors? Will it make life easier for moderators? Will it be possible to find your way around the forum a lot quicker? Are things right now really that bad? I don't know...
Lots of people just wander into this forum and end up either moving on or occasionally learn the ropes and end up contributing a lot of good advice. Often it is the 'junior members' who don't mind answering questions that other more experienced members are tired of answering over and over...
AD has to make sure not to discourage that. If the rules are changed as discussed/proposed, it would be important to monitor for possible decline in the number of junior members...

I've thought about this a lot, both before this thread started and since, and I don't agree with it for 2 reasons.
1. There are too many exceptions to the rule that forum newbie = actual newbie. I was lurking (but registered) here for several months before I ever posted a question and there are a lot of people who know more than I did then when they get here. Sure posts could always be moved to the advanced forum, but I think there's already plenty of work for the mods now. Especially since the more users we attract the more "real" problem threads we get. I'd rather make sure the mods have as much time as possible for things like piracy related questions that could pose a significant threat to the site's continued existence. One of these days though I'm going to find out how to make money fast before Praetor deletes the post. 8D
2. It doesn't fit the general atmosphere here. The way I see it there are 2 reasons the membership has grown so quickly in the last several months. The obvious reason is that there are a lot more DVD burners sold. That's a valid point, but it doesn't tell the whole story. There are lots of DVD backup sites out there. There must be something about Afterdawn in particular that makes a difference.
I think that something is the laid back atmosphere and very relaxed rules. If it isn't illegal or otherwise completely inapropriate (ie spam) it's probably fair game for discussion in one of the forums. The admins obviously prefer that we police ourselves for the most part, and I like to think we usually live up to their expectations. The posters here tend to be mature enough to understand that, and I've seen many a Junior Member or Newbie helping out by making it clear that a question isn't allowed. If we can trust newbies to do their part on that front (and apparently we can) I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt regarding what forum their question gets posted to.

GIMP is actually a GNU program (GNU Image Manipulation Program) which I started using on FreeBSD (so there should be an OSX port anyway), but I'm using the Windows version right now. I don't do anything fancy with it - just capture windows and crop/resize them.
