Booting PS2 and homebrew used a whole differnt part of the PS2. When playing PSX games the part of the same circuity that the NA uses is used. So when you use HDL and an HDD this locks out the ability to use the part of the PSX that would allow you to play PSX games in the first place. Hard to understand but thats just how it is.

You will be able to play PSX games from a disc for sure, even if you have an HDD in your PS2.

Ok, I have neither searched for what Im about to state or bothered to look if anyone else has found this out as well. You dont just have to use a Gameshark e.t.c boot disc to boot a backup/other region psx disc, just magic keys and an original game for your region. All you do is the old psx disc swap trick. Remember back in the days when you couldnt get your hands on a mod chip for your psx and you had to fiddle with the inside of a biro or a spring? Well the magic keys do that for you. Insert your psx original and let it run. watch/listen for the disc speed changes.
It will start at speed two. this is the bit where the ps2 decides that its booting an original ps1 game. it will then drop to speed 1 to read the coding. Then it speeds up to 2 then down to 1 and back to 2 quickly. When it drops to 1x again, swap your discs! Your import/backup will boot ^^
So... insert--> 2x-----> 1x---> 2x---> 1x-> 2x---> {1x swap}.
I Tried this on a slimline ps2 silver with a European WipEout 2097 swapping to a US Xenogears. Worked everytime.

There is a better way, turn on your PS2 with no disc got to the PS2 memory card browser screen, insert a orginal PSX game, wait till the black disc shows up and swap it with the use of Magic Keys, or a flip top a slide card will damage the disc and the PS2. but I have a modchip all I want to do is play PSX games off the external hdd via usb extreme.

I have a problem that I am sure someone here can help me with. I have a PS2 console with a Mod chip. I tried to play a PS1 game in it and it would not load the game. Can someone please assist me in whatever I need to do to correct this.
I do not know what type of Mod chip is in it... before anyone ask me. lol
Thank you in advance.
