okay long story short brother bought an ipod off ebay 15g with dock connector it wasnt workin someone said it was his battery he replaced it but he couldnt get it restored or anything so i took it from him to see what i could do ive had some progress after having multiple issues apples tech support is no help at all but anyways here is my current position

ipod wont turn on unless in the dock (was turning on the other day but had low batter (bro didnt have cables to recharge i borrowed some)
windows sees as unknown device Unless in disc mode
well i start ipod updater plug in ipod and put it to disc mode after i put in dock since it wont turn on otherwise (tried reseting)
after 10min it will finaly let me choose to restore then after another 10 minutes i get one of 3 errors
-cannot lock ipod (felt like i was so close)
read up about it closed all backround programs even explorer at one point but kept gettin same error but the time i closed explorer i got
- cannot write to disc (or similar error)
and the last error i get is
- cannot mount
this is realy just reset and retry problem so my only realy problem is the
-cannot lock ipod

so assuming ive done everything on apple sight cept have it serviced (not an option cause im poor lol) and i KNOW i can fix the problem if i can just get it restored is there anything else i can try? oh also ipod gets VERY hot while in dock after a period of time to be safe i remove it and let it cool i read that its just harddrive AND recharge causing it to do that also during first attempt at cannot lock i unistalled itunes as apple said but never reinstalled till just now i didnt know if i needed itunes installed AND ipod updater but im trying one last time with itunes and ipod updater and closing all programs accesing ipod except explorer whew okay any advice would rock

OH also i was NEVER able to see ipod in itunes in any way disc mode or normal

Yep I remember that 3 minute thing....Sucks at first.

Here is a step by step guide to see if you are following the steps correctly:

Open the iPod Software Updater application. It can be found by clicking on the Start menu, pointing to All Programs (Windows XP) or Programs (Windows 2000), and then point to iPod.
Select the iPod Updater showing the most recent date in the filename.
Connect your iPod to your Windows PC.
When it becomes available, click Restore. An alert box appears to confirm you want to restore iPod.
A progress bar appears on the computer screen.
When the restore process on the computer has finished, close the iPod Updater and look at the screen on the iPod.
If you see an image of a wall power plug, connect your iPod to the AC adapter that came with it and plug it into a wall outlet and wait for the restore to complete.
If you see a progress bar underneath the Apple logo, leave the iPod connected to the computer.
If you had to put iPod into Disk Mode before restoring, the iPod screen may display "OK to Disconnect" and you may need to reset iPod.
After the restore is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

Just in case you are doing something wrong. ;-)

I don't think that that will solve anything. Lethal or a Mod may be here later on and be able to help you. I'm not sure what the problem could be.

- I don't personally know any moderators that know a lot about the iPod..

hello & welcome to the iPod forums.

I have tried to make sense of your questions, and I'll do my best to assess & suggest.

I notice that you are connected VIA your iPod dock. Have you tried eliminating that to see if that is the cause of your problem?

Can you see your iPod in windows explorer? If you can (I wouldn't normally suggest this, but in your case, it seems you've little to lose).

Dload the HP USB Format Tool.. download is here..
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/hpcpqdt/us/download/20306.html

After you have downloaded it, open it up and select your iPod's drive.

After you've done that, select 'File System FAT32', enter your iPod?s name in the Volume Label if it isn't already there.

Check the 'Quick Format' box, but not one in 'create a DOS Startup disk'. After doing this click Start, and wait for your iPod to be formatted.

Then, open up your iPod Updater, and click restore.

If all has gone correctly, your iPod will now be back to normal!

If all has gone as it did with myself, your iPod should now be ok.

*Note, try this method at your own risk. It worked for me, but I can give no guarantees.*
