dont use a 2mb cache hdd for your OS.its fine if you only do 1 thing but try doing multiple things and it just comes to a standstill...lmao

Rob,
I wasn't aware that you could buy a modern HDD with less than an 8MB Cache? Are you adjusting the Cache size yourself?

ddp,
Yes it shows the sound card or onboard sound in the device manager. It's just that some factory driver CDs don't have the Micro$oft patch I linked to Rob, and some do. All it takes is to install the patch, put the driver CD back in the drive and just let it run. The PCI error goes away and the sound works. If you are using AC97 instead of the HD Audio, it will work without the patch, but on mine you have to plug in the front panel header marked AC-97 to the sound port on the motherboard.

Russ

you are correct Russ. i dont have my hd audio pluged in as for i dont havea hd audio header. i am useing hte AC-97 audio plugin on the AC-97 header.

as for the 2mb cache i am 100% sure it is 2mb. it is a new hdd to me but it is a older hdd came out of a 5yo dell that it was used as a slave drive it only had 12gb of info on it when i wiped it clean and formated. i traded some extra mem to a buddy of mine for it. i basiclly got it just to install windows on and use it to get my main info off of my 500gb hdd then reformat that and have a nice new fresh install, but i was going to take my time doing it. but seeing how slow this 2mb cache is i will be doing it faster than i wanted to... i just hate to do a complete reinstall. i hate putting back all the programs, software, apps and such. plus with it being a ide hdd. i had to use my raid card controller to put my ide odd on and i dont liek how they burn when being used on that card controller. so it will all be going back. i need to find a small sata hdd smaller than 250gb for my OS and just be done with it..lol i jsut cant see paying the same price for a 160gb hdd that i can get a 500gb hdd.. ;)

Funny enough, I hardly ever reformat. I've redone one partition for Vista and 7 a few times but my current XP install on my main rig is over a year old and problem-free. Works, functions, and benches like the day I installed it.

I use a 160GB Seagate with a 38GB partition for my OS and I just swapped a 2 year old DeathStar for a 250 Seagate, because the Hitachi will run on a 1.5GB/s port and the Seagate won't. Now I have two totally silent drives, and the best is that it was an even swap!

BTW, you can connect the HD audio to the front panel header. If it has individual wires, each with it's own square plug, Look in your manual and it will show you haow to do it. If it's just a female plug like my Cooler Master has, just switch plugs!

Best Regards,
Russ

Rob,
Why would I laugh at your motherboard? Just either plug the HD Audio plug (if it's like mine), onto the Green plug near the rear of the motherboard or manually connect the individual plugs onto the connections shown in the manual. I guess I didn't make it clear that the same port is used for both, but the wiring is different. Sorry for the confusion! Do you have plugs or individual wire plugs?

Russ

ok i see what your saying now. you/i can plug either or into that F-Audio header. i do have the plugin for the HD-audio as the AC-97. i might try that in the morning. if i do that will i have to install the different drivers for it to work on the hdd now that i dont havea issue with? id say so. i do remember thought when i installed the drivers off the install cd i did install the realtek hi def audio as well.

Rob,
The drivers are installed. It's Micro$oft, not GigaByte causing the problem. You just run the program from the link I sent, then pop in the Drivers CD and it fiddles for a minute and then requests a reboot. Take the CD out and re-boot. When it comes up the sound should work!

very intresting. these athalon II X4s might turn out to be some off the best quad cores for the price.

the HD 5XXX series from ATI also seem good, but IMO for the the price peopel with high end cards right now need not to apply IMO. i mean realistically what game doesnt run right now?

i did a burn on this 80gb hdd(2mbcache) not bad but as i say in the scan thread you cant do much while burning on this hdd...lol heres a link if anyone is interested.(most allready go to the scan thread anyways)

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/540688/4841098

i did just order a WD 250GB SATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive 16MB 7200RPM 3.5IN Caviar Blue, and
Corsair 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) PC2-8500 / 1066 MHz DDR2 SDRAM XMS2 Dominator Xtreme Performance TwinX Matched Memory Kit PC2-8500 /

i know should have gotten the 4gb kit..but i had to get what the wallet allows.

so all i need now for my new build(pc's at a time that is new build)
is a MOBO, and the HAF932

time to swap back to the other 16mb cache hdd..lol

The HAF 932 is awesome. I'll be removing my board here before too long. I got my RMA# from Gigabyte. Im having a problem letting go LOL! They say it could be 2-3 business weeks. Thats a long time without a quad! Thankfully, the dual core runs a FALS 1Tb drive. Fastest boot time i've seen. Everything just plain runs SMOOTH! So I guess i'll be OK...

Hopefully, the new board will be everything I hope. Sounds like getting a second RMA could be tricky. If needs be, they're gonna wanna trouble shoot the crap out of it LOL! So it looks like the 1st RMA is a given...

depending on where your located OM7. it took me abouyt 5 days to get it shipped to cali. then they had it a couple days tinkering with it then about 4-5 days to get it back. it did seem like 2 months with it being gone..lol depending on what they find it might be a entire new board with them doing any BIOS updates. that's what they did the last time i sent my P45-DS3R back. i havent had a issue as of yet...KNOCKING ON WOOD>>>>>

I'm new here and thinking of replacing my old build from 2-3 years ago. I currently am running:

-Windows XP
-AMD 5600+ OC to 3.3GHz
-2 GB Corsair XMS2 800
-EVGA 8800 Ultra
-250 GB HD
-Viper Mid-tower
-750W PS

I'm thinking of either just getting a new Quad-core (AMD Phenom II X4 940)and 2 GB of RAM and nothing more.

Or building a new build with these specs:

-COOLER MASTER COSMOS 1000 RC
-ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 X58
-Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz
-CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB
-EVGA GeForce GTX 275 Superclocked Edition

Now my questions are should I do just a few small upgrades or do a full blown power machine?

Thanks

before you upgrade your graphics card, wait for the 5870/5850 to be released, hopefully they will make pricedrops among other cards drop.

also what do you use the cards for?

Quick Thoughts-

After a lot of speculation, it is obvious that the Core i7/860 and i7/920 platforms perform equally for the most part when compared on an equal clock basis, otherwise the 860 in Turbo mode is a better solution in most cases at stock speeds. The X58/920 combination will offer a very slight improvement in performance when the data pipeline is full; however it is very small, even under heavy multitasking conditions. The X58/920 does offer improved graphics performance in SLI or CF configurations.

While the 965 BE is a very competent processor, it is overshadowed at times by the performance of the turbo enabled i5/750. In the 3D rendering applications, the sheer clock speed advantage of the 965 BE certainly comes into play when comparing it directly to the i5/750. When comparing clock for clock speeds at 3.8GHz, the Intel processors offer a clear performance advantage over the 965 BE, especially in the well threaded applications that take advantage of Hyper-Threading. If you overclock your system and want the absolute best performance, the Intel processors used in our article today are your best choice.

Even though our initial benchmark selection is fairly limited, the overall pattern continues in the balance of our benchmark test suite, even in those applications specifically suggested by AMD. However, it is different story in several of our game benchmarks when the AMD system is paired with an Nvidia GTX275 (other GTX2xx variants as well). Why this is, we do not know yet given the results of the AMD HD 4890 on either platform.

And now for the Hot Computer Opinion (HCO). The X58/920 and 790FX/965BE platforms seemed slow in daily usage compared to the P55/860 setup or even the P55/750 at times. I am talking non-overclocked standard issue setups running a variety of applications, especially when multitasking. Of course, the difference is due to the Turbo modes employed on the Lynnfield processors.

While the perceived difference in performance is not as drastic as when moving from a hard drive to a decent SSD, it certainly is there. The performance benchmarks might tell another story at times, but if you just sit down and use a P55/860 platform and then move to an X58/920, 790FX/965BE, or P45/C2Q setup, the performance differences are noticeable in day to day usage. Even the P55/750 has its benefits and generally felt very ?snappish? when under heavy loads.

Honestly, I really never thought I would say that after using a 790FX/965BE setup for several weeks and thinking afterwards I would have a very hard time recommending an X58/920 platform for typical home and gaming usage. When overclocked, the Intel Bloomfield/Lynnfield platforms basically performed equally on a clock for clock basis. The only differences were with the i5/750 in well-threaded applications. With HT enabled, the 860 and 920 are in a dead heat, except the Lynnfield platform will use about 70W less power for equal performance.

Unless you are a benchmark jockey, the dual x8 PCIe setup on the P55 is not going to be a performance hindrance with today?s video cards if you must run CrossFireX or SLI. Neither will the slightly better data throughput capabilities of the X58/920 when under heavy load conditions. I guess that really is the crux of the matter, unless you are a benchmark jockey then justifying a Bloomfield platform over a Lynnfield or even AMD?s Dragon platform is very difficult.

However, there are those that demand every last ounce of performance and the Bloomfield platform is the best choice for these particular users. I still really like the 790FX/965BE platform; in fact I would certainly purchase it over a P45/C2Q setup without question. When comparing it to the i5/750, the decision becomes more difficult, especially based on price.

However, considering my multitasking habits and the fact I do not overclock my work systems, the 965BE becomes the clear choice for me, until I compare it to the i7/860. Therein lies the problem, you can play the ?what if? game all day and it will get you absolutely nowhere. In the end, you have to choose a platform that best suits your needs and budget. I just happen to think the clear choice for my particular needs is the i7/860 processor on a mid-range or even budget P55 motherboard. We will soon see why.

WOW

7 YEAR WARRANTY!!!

All Corsair HX (modular) models have a 7 year warranty minus the 1000w with a 'lowly' 5,
all others excluding the budget CX have a 5 year warranty and the CX has a 3 year one.

This is one of the many reasons why Sam and now me are always banging on about them.

I could put something funny here but I cant be arsed. Now GO AWAY!
