Biostar depending on chip is nice and Intel if you don't wanna OC is great from what I've heard. ;) What about MSI, DFI, or ASUS depending on use and platform? ;)

Lol at the video - plus I notice it's HAWX, promoting ATI's graphics. Given how abuse ATI's performance is in that game, plus the DX11 card generation, I don't think 6 24" monitors at max detail is unrealistic to expect from a high end HD5800 series crossfire platform :P After all, 6 24"s is only effectively 3.5 30"s, and given that one HD4870 can run HAWX at 2560x1600 reasonably well, all you would need to max it out smoothly is 4-5x the power of a 4870 - that should ideally be something like an HD5870X2.
Notice the two GPUs, and the 3dmark far higher than mine (23,020) - 3dmark06 is such a CPU test these days :P

and that's just it, if you're a high end builder, it's Intel I'm afraid. There literally are no top end AMD products. The i5 750 has effectively rendered the X4 965BE midrange.

I don't know that the 750 is the best Intel has to offer, but I do agree with Intel being the current top dog at present. And if that continues, when I have proper funds, I'd like to give intel the attention it deserves :D I'd like to see this "Number crunching Behemoth"

The i5 750 is the cheap Lynnfield. It's of course the best value, but above it you have the i7 920 (sort of), 860, 870, 940, 950, 965 and 975. That's quite a lot of CPUs AMD can't compete with...

By compete, you mean performance wise. I'd agree with that from what i've read.
Lets say you had 1000$ to spend on 975 Extreme edition. Is it worth it? Or could the lesser models be Oc'd to match its performance. Is 975 merely an Oc'd lesser model, thats been Oc'd internally.

Of course I do. AMDs are good value in almost every segment of the market they are in (the only exception I can think of being the 900 quads as of the i5's release) but apart from that, in the i7 area, there aren't any AMD CPUs to be competitive.

Oman7,
Keep in mind that the Cheap i5 does not have HT enabled, so it's limited to 4 threads rather than the 8 you would have, with HT enabled! Then there's the price!
I know Sam was saying that AMD can't compete with them, but entry level as I posted the other day is right at $400 for MB, CPU and Decent AM3 memory. There seems to be quite a shortage of i5/i7 CPU coolers as well, as Newegg only shows 2 at the moment, both from Cooler Master, so throw in another $20 to $30 for a Cooler and you are looking at over $400 to get in the door! If I was building a new computer, I would spend about $100 more and get a much better Motherboard and cas 7 DDR3-1333 memory. I can't see the point of getting a featureless motherboard and cheap DDR3-1066 memory, just to keep the price down at that point! This would be my build right now!
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/4558/neweggv.jpg
$476.27 total, is not bad at all for what you get compared to the lowest entry level here in the US. The cheapest you can build one for ATM is $415.14!
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8548/newegg2.jpg
You get a heck of a lot more for that extra $61! I would even consider one for myself! Might be fun! You could use the $110 Gigabyte MB, and still have something very decent for around $430-$435!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128405
It's got lots of bells and whistles, for a $110 motherboard!
Best Regards,
Russ

What I meant by agreeing with sam, was that intel has the top dog hands down. I was not talking about AMD's competitive pricing. I don't know about encoding, but i'd sure like to see an intel with extreme number crunching skills, and what it can do otherwise. Basically, i'd like to have the two next to each other (AMD/Intel), to see a side by side comparison for myself. I get the feeling that everyday tasks won't feel any different with the top dog i7 even. I dont know about others...but people who have sat down to both of my AMD computers are wowed and in awe. My Quad machine multitasks like crazy, and the dual core is just plain smooth as a babies bottom! Im not an AMD fanboy really, its simply all i've ever been able to afford. Believe me, I REALLY wanna try an Intel :D

Oman7,
I agree with you. Every time I let someone use my computer, I get the same comments about how smooth and quiet it runs! If I stick in a DVD, they are in awe of the picture quality of my movies. Some people have audibly Gasped! I guess it's the 512MB of memory vs the 128MB of my old 7600GT, or something. The 9500GT with 512 GDDR3 Rocks at everything and is the perfect match to get the best out of my S-PVA/MVA monitor.
Like you, I wouldn't mind building an Intel at all, especially when given a chance to play with a completely new platform. I still wouldn't get rid of the one I have though. Not until after I drop a PII-940 or better in it and play some more! :) x3 720 first and then a x4 940 or better next. That will keep me busy having fun, for a while!
Russ

Couple things.
Creaky, your right to not allow auto updates. Microsoft has officially annoyed me. Lets just say that a particular program fix, that used to run on vista fine, no longer works on windows 7. BS!!! They can make all the excuses in the world. I ain't buying it. While I'll still buy the OS, I won't buy their excuses LOL! They're sell outs. Thats what I think about it. The administrator crud is really making me nuts!!! I wish everything would automatically run AS ADMINISTRATOR. Im the only friggin person using my computer!!! I'll look for a fix now.
Sam, your tactic for disabling and re-enabling the LAN adapters did not work. At least if the following is what you meant:
My machine hasn't had any problems in a few weeks. But my brother also runs windows 7...

Oman7,
I would think that a System Restore to a date previous to the upgrade or upgrades causing the problem will work. I have done that before for that very reason, so I know it will work!

I haven't used Auto Updates and all my XP installs are essentially only as current as 2002 or something. Everything works fine for me hence why i don't bother with them. No instability or insecurity that i've ever seen.
As to the NIC playing up, i had this in Win7 yesterday, though in my case it was due to DD-WRT settings. I'd literally been up on a couple of all-nighters fighting with a couple DD-WRT upgrades to try to get a virtual BSSID up. Am trying to get a Virtual WEP SSID to co-exist on the same router with the primary WPA/AES interface. Easy in practice but doesn't (yet) work, basically trying to do this so i don't have to run a separate WEP router ie completely underemining the security of the rest of the WPA2 network.
Anyways, i can't remember if you were using DD-WRT or not, in my case i'd mistakenly ticked 3 tickboxes due to lack of sleep and sheer frustration
