A friend of mine gave me his ipod to transfer songs onto. When I connected his IPOD to my laptop it read not connected. The box appears that reads: This iPOD needs to be reformatted for use on your PC. Click on the........ After clicking on update it only gives the option to restore which of course erases...How do I format his iPOD to transfer songs from my laptop... I would just restore but if I am ever able to access his ipod I plan to transfer some of his files onto mine with the help of afterdawn's nifty little how to guide.....Please help!!!!

Have you been using your iPod on the mac before? If so, your iPod will still be formatted for use with mac using its' HFS+ file system.

In this case, you will need an application like macopener, which allows you to use a Mac formatted iPod on a Windows OS.

more info on that can be found here ..

Then, once the iPod is accesible, you will need an iPod explorer app like ephpod to view & interchange files between your iPod and your computer.

BIGGER PROBLEMS NOW!!!! I should have asked what would happen if you attempt to restore the iPOD if it was previously formatted for Mac..Thats what I attempted to do, assuming I could restore it back to factory settings and just reoption it for windows...Didnt seem to work, because now I'm getting a power outlet on the screen and I think it asked to plug iPOD into external power source and something in reference to firewire..Which I dont have either..... I should have left it alone because now all the songs are erased and I have no access to the iPOD. S.O.S.

Which gen of iPod do you have? If you have a 4g, you should have got an AC adapter with the iPod. You need to perform a software reflash by plugging your iPod into a power outlet (as you have just reformatted your iPod with the Updater software).

Once you have done this, your iPod will be in normal working order, minus the songs.

I think its 4th gen..... It's a 60 gig without video....And as I said it belongs to my friend....I thought I was doing him a favor by transferring some music...Not sure if he even has the adapter. So if I do get the external adapter.. Once I plug into power outlet and update it everything should be ok....

Yes, no need to panic, my friend. The iPod is fine but unfortunately, the music is lost.

Once you have connected to your iPod to the power outlet and allowed it to perform the software reflash, you will have a normal (albeit empty) iPod.
