This is what happened...

My desktop computer got a virus, so I had to reinstall Windows XP, and all the programs I owned for that computer. While my PC was reinstalling, I decided to install my iPod software onto my laptop. I installed iTunes and iPod Updater from the CD that came with the iPod Video 30 GB when I bought it. Knowing that the iPod Updater firmware was the old 1.0 installed on the laptop, while my iPod was already updated to firmware 1.1 due to the useage of my iPod on my desktop PC, I decided to go to www.iPod.com to install the new iPod Updater firmware 1.1 onto my laptop. I thought to myself that maybe my laptop, (which is thinking my iPod firmware version is 1.0,) would cause conflicts with the iPod itself because really, the firmware on the iPod was version 1.1, so that is why I installed the new iPod Updater firmware version 1.1 onto my laptop. Once that was done, I opened the iPod Updater software and chose to delete all my songs and movies off of my iPod, so I clicked restore. Suddenly, the restore operation failed, and my iPod displayed a folder with an exclamation point in a triangle next to it. I knew this was a common problem, so I tried to resolve it, no luck. I left the iPod alone for a few days, I came back to try and turn it on again, but this time, it wouldn't even turn on. This is where I am right now. No matter what I do, I can't get my iPod to turn on, and my sister took my laptop to college for 2 months because she really needed it. So what do I do? How do I get my iPod to turn back on AND make it able to work with my desktop PC? (By the way, my laptop runs on Windows XP)

Welcome to our forums, Armobro.

First off, v1.1 firmware is a very unstable firmware that is known to have many issues. I would upgrade to v1.1.1 firmware. Here is the link to download it: http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

From Lethal's FAQ at the top of this forum:
QU 16 - "My iPod won't start up, whats wrong?"

a) Check the hold switch and make sure that it's not on. If you have a remote control plugged into it, make sure that it's hold switch is off as well.
b) Plug it into a power adapter to charge it. You may have a flat battery, hence the reason it's not booting up.
c) If you can get the iPod to mount on your computer, restore it with the latest iPod Software Updater that works with your iPod model. (Start--> All Programs--> iPod--> iPod Updater by default).
Once you have found located it and opened it, click `restore`.

Note that restoring your iPod erases all the data on it, so make sure you have a backup of the data on your iPod.

d) If the iPod won't mount on the computer or charge, you might need to drain the battery out. Stick it to one side until it is flat and then try charging it again.
e) If all these fail, then your battery is most probably faulty or dead. iPods are notorious for their crappy battery performance, so you should contact Apple and get a new battery fitted. If you are under warranty or Applecare, then this should be free. Otherwise, it will cost you. ;)

To use your iPod on multiple computers, you will have to copy the songs from your iPod back onto the Laptop so that the Laptop and the PC have the same music files on them. To do this, follow this guide:

Armobro,

Have a look at the passage from my FAQ which jazo posted at the top.. have you tried charging your iPod, for example? (It could be something as trivial as that..)

If you have no other means of charging your iPod's battery up other than via the usb port in your laptop, (which is not within access at the moment), then I suggest you invest in an AC adapter, as they are also of good use when travelling.

I wouldn't normally recommend Apple's accessories, however, the battery isn't something to be taken for granted -- a cheap charger could do some serious, if not permanent, damage to your iPod.

Have a look here for information on Apple-made chargers (You should easily be able to pick one up from your nearest Apple store or PC specialist dept.)

As Lethal posted, it would be wise to purchase one not just to fix the problem, but for charging in the future. ;-)
