i just recently purchased a 60gig 5th gen ipod, but when i put files onto it that are the length of a tv episode or longer, the movie freezes and then starts up again with no sound. Is this normal or do i have to split the files?

First off, welcome to Afterdawn.

If you are running the 1.1 firmware (which I assume you are), then you will have to upgrade to 1.1.1. If you are unsure of which one you are using, on your iPod, go to settings-->about. Then, next to version, it will tell you the firmware version.

If you are running the 1.1 version, then you will need to upgrade to 1.1.1. To do so, download the latest updater from this link: http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

Next, connect your iPod, open the updater that you downloaded, and click Update. Then, you will have the 1.1.1 firmware installed onto your iPod after the process is complete.

If the problem still exists after doing this, make sure that you are using the right settings. The maximum settings for the iPod Video are as follows:

H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320x240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats.

MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480x480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

Feel free to post back with any further questions. ;-)
