I'm having trouble once again, my ps2 (V7 with DMS4 Lite E.Z.I modchip) plays ps2 dvd backups, ps2 cd backups, ps2 dvd originals, and ps2 cd originals without any trouble.

the ps1 originals and ps1 cd backups load fine in the browser, no noise and the icon appears. after selecting it the ps2 starts making a clicking a grinding for about 10 seconds, then the disc stops spinning and the screen stays black. Following some guides i manually cleaned my laser again, first with some compressed air and then with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip.

No change after cleaning so i followed some other recommendations about placing some tape on the upside of the cd near the center in equal lengths. Still grinds and clicks. i tried adjusting the laser many times, it will only function in the location it was originaly so i set it back to the marks i made.

Some of the other members had posted something about holding the reset button until the eject button lights up, no luck with that either. i'm using Maxell's and Verbatim CD-R's (made in japan).
I also tried disabling my chip to play the ps1 originals, it just gives me a RSOD after scanning the disc.

I won't lie, some of my originals do have some scratches. so i tried some of my well handled games aswell (no dirt,no scratches, no anything)

Here's a listing of the ps1 originals and backups i tried

Final Fantasy 9 - original & verbatim
Final fantasy 8 - original
final fantasy 7 - verbatim & Maxell
Chrono Cross - (well handled, no dirt/scratches) original
Chrono Trigger - Maxell
Harry potter and the sorcerer's stone - original
Final fantasy 5 & 6 (anthologies) - maxell, verbatim & original
Gameshark (ps1) - original
Need for Speed 4 : High Stakes - Original & maxell

All of them give the same results no matter what i try. Just tell me, is there something i didnt do right? or is my laser on it's last leg?

here's a recap on my ps2
V7 - DMS4 Lite E.Z.I (with latest toxic bios)
Cleaned the laser and inside of PS2, tried adjusting laser.
Tried the tape on cd trick
tried the reset button method
tried tweaking the options in toxic bios
tried disabling the modchip

If your saying it doesnt read PSX Backups or Orginals then your PS2 is starting to go it sounds like. IDK if anyone has ever posted this but this is how PS2 Phats/Chubbies usually die:
PSX Disc stop reading/Black Bottoms
PS2 CDs stop reading/Blue Bottoms
PS2 DVD9s/Dual-Layers/Gold Bottoms
then lastely if ever
PS2 DVD5s/White Bottoms

The PS2 laser was made orginal to just work with DVD5s or White Bottoms. The others where added later on and typically as the console ages the others quit working but many people have stated that they have owned systems that quit reading all but DVD5 and it lasted them till the day God of War (a DVD9 game) came out (a couple years usually) and they decided they needed to buy a new on to play it.

If my laser is going bad would i be better off buying a Refurb PS2 or just the laser assembly. if i go with a refurb i heard about v9 and such requiring a 'romeo' mod, does the DMS4 Lite E.Z.I require this too, or is it just for the solder chips?

Youd have to check around with that particualr chip or a working model cross sheet. It should be easy enough to find. When you say Refurb i assume you are speaking about a Gamestop/EB refurb. If so dont. I work at a gamestop and we try hard to never sale a PS2/XBOX that our company refurbed cause we suck at doing it. Our company just fixes the one problem but doesnt run test to see if anything else is wrong

ok so no EB/GS refurb, a new laser is going to set me back $70 + S&H. You wouldnt think a failing laser would cause grinding and clicking though, what would i know though. I checked the white plastic arm that rides on the worm gear too, somebody told me once about them getting worn out and that causes a clicking and grinding.

I regreased the worm gear with lithium grease and checked the arm, it seemed to be fairly decent. slightly bent and a few minor wear marks, i straightened it back out but it still does the same thing.

I did notice something unusual though, when the laser is closest to the hub it rubs the hub from time to time. but when it's clicking and grinding the laser is about 1/4 to 1/2" away from the hub

To me from working with other items like this it sounds like something is wrong with the ball bearings in the part that actually spins the disc. Maybe when you do CD games in general since they spin much faster thats when it messes up. Look at the disc next time when booting to see if it rotates in odd quick spin stop quick spin motions.

after the eject button flashes (to signal it's booting the disc after the first spin.) the drive emits the dreaded click & grind.. slows to a stop, starts up again (continues a little longer) and then stops completely
