I purchassed AnyDVD & copyDVD, but have been able to use Shrink for most of the DVD's I 'backup'. However, tried to copy Rumor has it, and with both Shrink and copyDVD I get an error. Shrinks is just an error, but copyDVD's error says it's a media problem.

I'm using a fairly new Samsung DVDR, and using Maxell DVD-R's. This is what has backed up many DVD's without any issues. But after going through 3 blank dvd's (1 with Shrink, and 2 with copyDVD) and getting the same error (in the same place with the 2 copydvd attemps - 93% of the burn is completed), I'm just wondering if it's really a media issue or if there's something else.

????

Worked for me using AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, which version are you running? the current is 2.8.9.9, try ripping the image to an ISO instead of to a DVD first, then rip to the DVD. Also what type of media are you using, hopefully it is not CMC type....

As blivetNC said hopefully you didn't get Maxell's made by CMC. Maxell does use some better manufacturers too esp. if they are made in Japan.
To find out who made the Maxell's pop one in your drive. Since your using Shrink my quess is you hae Nero also. In Nero go to Nero ToolKit>InfoTool>disc tab. The manufacturer will be listed there.
Post back the manufacturer.

Also make sure your drive firmware is up to date.

What's your burn speed also?

The manufacturer ID: MXL RG03

I havn't updatetd the firmware since I purchassed the drive, I'm going to assume it's not up to date. But seeing how it's worked all the time in the past, I don't see that being the issue. My burn speed with cloneDVD2 is set to max.

CloneDVD2 version 2.8.9.9

Did this one yesterday using DVD Shrink with AnyDVD running in background - no problems. You may have a faulty original.

Ah you got the good manufacturer w/ those Maxell's.
To rule a media issue - take the burn speed down a notch and update the firmware of your drive.
Do you remember the error from Shrink? Which version of Nero are you running - like 6.6.0.18 or 7.0.8.2?
One thing firmware does is 'teach' your drve the write strategies of media. If the drive doesn't have the write strategy from the firmware it will use a generic one. This sometime works sometimes doesn't.
Your can check which version you have in Nero - same place as checking the manufacturer of the disc but under the drive tab. There's a field there for the version #.
You can then check the manufacturers website or here:

Here is the warning that AnyDVD gives me when I try burning with Shrink

WARNING!

Failed to read DVD!

1. - DVD Media is dirty, you can try to clean it.
2. - DVD Media is damaged, you have to replace it.
3. - Your drive is a reagion locked RPC2 drive, which does not allow reading of a scrambled sectors from a different region and you try to read a DVD from a different region.
Known drives having this problem a RICOH/PHILIPS DVD Writers and Matshita/Panasonic DVD readers and writers.

4. - Your drive is a RPC2 drive that has not yet been assigned a Region. Try to assign one, or try to find a RPC1 patched firmware at http://www.rpc1.com

I also copied the log from Shrink. It can be viewed at www.tiomat.com/stuff/log.txt.

The dvd I'm trying to copy has a couple of scratchs on it, but nothing that should prevent it from copying. The dvd that I was burning to, has 2 small finger prints on it. However I looked at one of the other ones that failed, and that one's perfectly clean.

AnyDVD/CloneDVD is telling you it doesn't like the disc so those scratches may be why. Shrink in my experince is better at ripping ones that CloneDVD may not.
From your log shrink ripped the files Nero just can't burn them.
The error you're getting SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND & (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) mean it doesn't like the media used.
Your drive recognizes the discs just not fully. Under media specific there is all zeros - usually the media id is here.
So update your firmware to the latest US07:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces
Try 4x too - see if that helps.
Since Shrink saved the files to your hard drive you can just use Nero Burning Rom or Express to burn the video_ts folder.

The latest firmware off of Samsungs site is

TS-H552U Global Distribution (ver.US06)

Is this what I should be using? I've never updated firmware, but don't think it can be that hard to figure out how.

EDIT: Ok, I updated the firmware, but I received the same error w/ Shrink.

You currently have US06. The latest can be found at the link above or here from samsung:
http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/
The samsung site will also give you directions. Usually not very hard and takes less than a few minutes.

Missed some other suggestions toggling back to your log.
Your Nero can use an update - the last version to autoburn w/ Shrink is
6.6.0.18. Here's some links:
Package 1
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

Package 2 (recode & vision)
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

You also have Roxio which can sometimes cause problems - if this is a recent install than you may want to uninstall it and run the clean tool.

Ok, this is getting frustrating. I've updated the firmware to us07, updated Nero to 6.6.0.18, and it's still not working.

Any other ideas?

Yes failures can get frustrating!!
Take your burn speed down to 4x. You can also try opening those files (video_ts folder)on your hard drive in Clone and using it to burn.
Check you dma mode on your drives -
http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/231/dmaissues
Nero has off but looks like you have either sata or nvidia controllers?

Has anything else changed since you were last able to burn?

It's an Nvidia controler. When I follow the instructions about the dma channels, I don't see a primary and a seconday, I see:

NVIDIA nForce4 Parrallel ATA Controller
NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller
NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller

When I look at the Primary Channel, the Samsung is the Master Drive, and is set to Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra33. A box is checked to allow Bios to select the transfer mode. My slave is an Asus DVD/CDRW and is set to DMA 5 - Ultra 100, and again BIOS is set to select the transfer mode.

I havn't changed anything in months. About 6 months ago, I purchassed a 50 stack of Sony DVD+R's and several 10 packs of Maxell DVD-R's. This is the first time that I havn't used Maxells (DVD-R), which after alternating between the Sony's and the Maxells I open this pack, and have all these issues.

I had some issues in the past, but none that couldn't be solved by upgrading the software that I was using to a newer version. It wasn't until the other day when I finished off the last of the Sony DVD's, and opened the pack of Maxells that I started getting this issue. But like I said, I've used these exact Maxells in the past with no issues what-so ever. I havn't upgraded or changed anything. A couple of mths ago I purchassed AnyDVD, but I hardly think that's the reason why the Maxells won't work. I can't remember if I've used any Maxell's since then, as I havn't been burning as much lately.

I'm thinking that tomorrow I'm going to try taking them back (thank you Wall Mart). Although I don't want to get the Sony's as they don't come with case's. And it's a pain to deal with labels and cases and shit.

I've also tried a different movie, and have experienced the exact same issues. I'm just now trying to use CloneDVD2 with a 4x write speed. Will post back with the results.

EDIT: Wait, I removed a couple of unused programs (nothing to do with Sly-soft, or Nero or any other burning software), and I did a defrag a couple of days ago. That couldn't be the issue could it?

EDIT: Ok, the CloneDVD2 with the 4x write speed worked. However, does this mean that Shrink won't work in the future, and that I have to use CloneDVD2 from now on? Or is there a way to control Shrinks write speed? I looked but didn't see any obivious controls. Another question, I was looking thru the options in Shrink, and one of them is:

Check RPC2 drive region code when opening a DVD

One of the errors that AnyDVD pulled up when complaining about the media said something about RPC2 region code. Should this box be checked?

I'm still going to try and take the damn dvd's back. Maybe they'll take them, and maybe they won't... will have to see.

Hi prfect
Well you finally got it burned!
2 quesses on why Clone worked & not Nero -
From your Nero log looks like Nero was using it's own aspi driver while Clone DVD may have used windows.
In Clone you reduced your burn speed to 4x (most likely reason I think).
I don't think uninstalling some progs was as issue or a defrag. Defrag is a good thing to do on a regular basis.
I think this new pack of Maxells may not be as good as the last ones you used. Unfortunatley there can be some duds even with 'A' list media though not as common.
Other good ones to buy in store: Verbatim and made in Japan Sony or Fuji.

Yes you can still use Nero just try some different discs and/or reduce the burn speed for these.
To do that - have the blank in the drive - when you click back up - click on the burn settings tab. You can change your burn speed there.

For the RPC2 since your running AnyDVD this will make the disc region free to the drive. You can run AnyDVD w/ Shrink. I don't think that part of the error had to do w/ this.

For the drives - Nero doesn't seem to show the transfer mode correctly (well DMA enabled) for nvidia, sata or raid ontrollers.
Just wanted to check and make sure you're not in PIO mode.

You know you can get discs alot cheaper (caseless) esp. when there on sale then pick up some of the slimline jewels cases when there on sale. Just a thought.

Ok. Thanks alot Blinkie.

As for the caseless DVD's, I live in northern Canada, and the cost to buy a large spindle of DVD's, then to buy the Cd cases (full size - with a spine that you can label), as well as inserts works out to the almost the exact same. Maybe a couple of dollars more or less depending on if there's a sale. But for the hassel it's easier to pay the extra couple of $$ and not have to deal with it.

As for all the dudes, I went and returned them. :)

Thank you Wall Mart! And thanks again Blinkie!
