Nintendo said that Wii wont come with a hard drive. What if I wanted to use my own? Would I be able to connect a USB external paralel ATA hard drive? I doubt anyone knows this yet, but what is the maximum partition it would support if any?

Hasn't been confirmed what will be compatible with the usb drives, but I don't see why not.
Edit** well, actually I do see why not, but I remember reading from ign or something that an external hard drive should work.

OMG!!!! My dreams came true! I will put a 250 GB EXTERNAL HDD!! It presently has 512 mb built-in flash memory right? (flash memory=similar to hdd except that instead of spinning a hard disk its just a immobile cartridge right)
If I insult you...don't get offended...my insults are "friendly insults"...I know this sounds stupid (ridiculous) but I am fet up of writing, "no offense" in my posts...

flash memory is as mobile as anything else, but not an internal flash drive such as the one Wii has.
imo, flash is tons better than standard hard drives. no risks of scratching or anything. I'm just counting the days until flash drives become big enough to compete with behemoth 250 gb HDD's.

Sounds cool but are'nt those high capacity flash drives expensive?I bought one a while back when they were just coming out with 512 mb ones and they were 100 bucks so I just bought a 128mb one for $30 it's cool cause it looks like a pen and even writes.
Besides what on the wii will require one?Isn't the virtual console games you buy stored on a remote server for playing later?Just don't see a use for it.If you have that many save games you need to delete some lol.

Either that or you buy them from a store, or, lol, it will be hacked within 3 months and you can put on your own roms.

Well I could see it as maybe useful for hacking it but that's about it.We really don't know to what extent nintendo will protect there system though.

teh reason I wanted to use a hard drive for it was so, if a mod chip comes out, I can store my own roms and also store images of Wii games.

nintendo is perfecting the emulators for us to hack instead of us going through years of creating a n64 emulator for example (project 64 is one of them) which has bugs, now it will be 99-100% bugless!

ok let me explain this for the last time
nintendo wii will use flash cf cards the same cards that most $1,000 digital cameras use and nintendo has no plans for a huge drive and microdrives will not work because they wont fit into the wii's memory card slot wow
so you are stuck at 1 gig or less
have fun

and project 64 cant emulate super mario 64 worth %$%$%
because all though the game works the game doesn't allow you to beat the sunkin ship level in area one because someone programed the eel wrong
so 99 to 100%
my fat %$#
try 50 to 80%
several games dont work on project 64

Which is exactly what s3a is talking about .. Nintendo is perfecting an emulator for us to hack / steal from their system, giving us a 99 - 100% working emulator which project 64 certainly is not.

according to Wiki, Wii will support USB storage as well as SD (maybe CF) cards.Ive seen 8gb flash cards before but those cost more thean $250 so Id rather just use my 200GB external that costed me $55.

Who knows, until we get a Wii and a screw driver. There will be a possibility if they want to run an MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online). I believe that's the reason ps2 had a hard drive connect in their expansion bay to their network card. They could run it through the USB port, but it would take either native (Nintendo programmed) or third party usb hard drive drivers to support that. Not to mention they could be mean and develop their own Fat system (ex:fat,fat16,fat32,NTFS...file systems) so that we couldn't do anything until we figured that out. I'm assuming you want a hard drive to run GC/Wii/other games from the drive or homebrew Apps. In this case you need to find a way to tell Wii to run something on the hard drive (no auto insert here) via a program and usually a verification bypass (mod chip, swap disk trick, memory card exploit). Ofcourse, since the Wii is not out yet that is all hypothetical. Nintendo, not being quite as greedy as Sony, may not want to sacrifice time and practicality, in the name of security. May not make the Wii as protected, for example the DS vs PsP. Then again if they make it too easy, who would pay for games. I don't think flash memory (SD/USB/USBHD) memory won't suffice compared to IDE Hard Drives, as prices will drop and sizes will grow. The problem will be how to make the Wii hackable. I for one will definetely be looking forward to using the Wii's emulators. It will have to be 100% compatible with the older systems to run those games. Since emulating a different, older and primitive technology on a newer system has always caused headaches for programmers. The solution in my mind would be to have Noac (Nintendo on a chip) in the Wii rather than try to reproduce a game using Wii's equipment (where possible). Maybe I'll start a thread on that idea...as its slightly deeper than hard drive possibility.

Hi everone,
I was on IGN 5 minutes ago and on the mail section it had someone write in asking about an external hardrive, and it goes on about how nintendo has mentioned....acturly here you can read for yourself http://uk.wii.ign.com/mail/ if you click on the 6th sep and its tilled "Wii and USB". also nintendo have said they will proberly release there own sd cards as well as ones you can buy and the sd cards that vary from 2gb - 7gb and sd cards are getting pretty cheap now hear in england you can find highspeed ones for £19(i think thats about $38) on play.com so if the hard drive thing never happens (which will suck) you can always get a 7gb sd card which i have a feeling will be no more expensive the 2gb psp card.

i dont think hard drives will work, cos the virtual console games could then be easily distributed over the internet
