I did my Samsung successful, but I was thinking about doing someone's Hitachi today for him. Is it worth it? I heard it harder to do and has problems reading discs. Also would hotswaping my Samsung make it easier to put it in mode B? Thanks for any replies.

i broke the video display on my samsung, and bricked a hitachi, trying to use the hotswap method. don't use it. the crosswire sounds complex and difficult, but its VERY VERY easy. Just jam wires in the 0 and 9 slots, have them touch, turn on the xbox then at the moment you see the green light, untouch the wires... very simple. Its fairly easy now to hack the hitachi, use garyopa's 7in1 hitachi flasher, and you'll be all set.
As well there are tricks to get hitachi to reconize all the media the samsung reconizes.
When inserting the disk, wait 5 sec, and hit eject twice :P it will load the game.

OK so the Hotswap is bad. I was nervous about the cross wire trick although I heard it's not hard to do. I just glanced at the info, but it looks like I don't have to hex edit anything. Is that the case?

yeah, you don't need my (ronnie) help with the hexedit :P
Just download the 7in1 hitachi flash and type "flash.bat h" note "h" is my hitachi drive letter in windows. it will complete the hack for you, if you've done you're reading you'll know that errors occur in which you have to restart the bat, however this has an auto rety if an error occurs, and the only result after running this program is "100% done". Very very useful.

I already have the 6in1. Is that good enough? I can look for the 7in1 if not. It sounds like other than the mode B thing the Hitachi may be easier to flash.

take the power cable on the dvd drive of your xbox, lift up the plastic clip for the 0 wire, pull it out half way and slide a wire in with it back into place, same for the 9 wire. Touch the other ends by pinching them togehter, power on xbox, and release your pinch, casuing them to seperate -> mode B, very very easy.

Also does the Slax CD work? I don't think I have any wire at my place that I can use.

i coudln't get mine to work that way.. take apart any old toy with a wire in it. I used the game "operation" and ripped out the wire that is used to glow the red light when you touch the sides. any electrical wire will do.

I guess I could cut some speaker wire from my stero speakers in the house. Just so I make sure I have it clear, do I stick them in the 9 and 0 holes and touch them until the green power light comes on? And is it just the wires I put in there in the 9 and 0 holes? Sorry for so many Qs, but I don't want to mess this up especially since it's not my 360.

the zero hole is on the top right
o x x x x x <----- zero
o x x x x x
..^
the 9 hole is on the bottom left (not the empty hole)
once in modeB the green light in the middle of the ring will flash. Do not turn off your xbox until hack is done, turning off take it out of modeB

hey man.
I have been doing lots of reading.
Hitachi drives are good to go now as long as you can get it into modeb. Slax cd will work for some but 2 wire method will always work. Once you get it into modeb:
DO NOT USE LATEST BIRDY's PACKAGE!!!!!! This will brick your drive for sure!!!
USE GRAYOPA's v1.3 its stable and easy
GOOD LUCK

Sorry, I posted how it went on another thread. It was a success! I installed GARY OPA's 1.2 firmware on there and backups burned with a Lite-on on Verbatims and Office Depots (ritkek) all worked with the double eject method. It kind of sucked Gary put out a newer firmware with better media detection 2 days after I flashed it, but since it's not my 360 I'm leaving it as is.
