I recently just bought a spindle of 20 from online during a sale several weeks ago and everything so far has been great except one thing. I've noticed that when I fast foward during playback at 1x, 2x, etc the picture gets very garbled and fragmented so that some frames are meshed with other frames making it hard to tell where you are while fast fowarding except by pressing play. I've burned the same with Ridata DVD+R DL and it has no problems with regular fast fowarding. This is weird because I bought both media at about the same time, I use the exact same software and burner and the Verbatim fast foward issue bothered me. Perhaps Verbatim is overrated? Has anybody else experienced this?

It could just as well be your player as the discs, unless you rule it out by trying a different brand of player with a different chipset in it.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

tried the same disc on a non-upconverting DVD player using component and there was no garbled-ness when fast-forwarding. Hmmmm. Wonder if it has to do with the upconverting but can't understand why it there is no problem with Ritek DVD+R DL.

Be sure to booktype them dvd-rom and keep burn speeds to 2.4x, 4x max, but I recommend 2.4x with DL media.

I used this guide for booktyping http://my.afterdawn.com/maxburn/blog_ent...ooktypesettings
but apparently my Nero 6.6 doesn't have that booktype option for 'burning rom' or 'nero express'. Since it was the last Nero 6 released before Nero 7 I'm wondering if it sets automatically to DVD-ROM booktyping.

Nero doesn't booktype every drive. Even the booktyping capable benqs,it'll do the 1620,but not my 1640 and 1650.

Another thing: Nero6 does have issues for DL backups. Usually issues with the layer break.Nero7 was suppose to take care of that issue,I don't have it yet.

I use DVD Decrypter in ISO read mode and ImgBurn to burn for my DVD-5 to DVD-5 and DVD-9 to DL backups. A 1:1 copy,no compression, supposedly a better DL burn program.

Dvd decrypter's ISO write mode is nearly identical to ImgBurn -same author lightningUK for both those programs. No ripping feature for ImgBurn. Both programs free! You may also be able set the booktyping in them. Just click the small book icon on lower/right corner/select the tab-if it matches your drive, set to dvd-rom for your +r DL media/OK.

Booktyping helps for stand alone compatability, but shouldn't do much to help your playback issue.

Vjbob: What's the brand name and Model # of your DVD-RW drive?

What's the firmware version? Neroinfotool will tell you.

How do they look when playing them normal?

How do they look, when you view them on your pc burner-the drive that burned them- using a program like Windvd or Powerdvd and fast forwarding them?

Maybe a firmware issue? Your burner's firmware may need updated to help the write strategy for those Verbatim DL discs. The playback on your pc will help verify that.

I only use Verbatim (95123) 2.4X - 6X 8.5GB Double Layer DVD+R DL White Inkjet Printable media and I always burn at 4X and get perfect results every time. I have burned a few at 6X but am not comfortable burning at that speed as yet. Having said that, when I do burn at 6X, I am able to burn a full dual layer DVD in about 18 minutes.

Yeah I was told the same thing in another thread and switched to burning video-files to ISO using ImgBurn 2.1.0 instead of Nero 6.6.1.4. Was wondering if there was a program that would create a ISO image from DVD-Video files and also wondering if AnyDVD seriously interferes with ImgBurn whether ripping or burning.

As for my burner I use Pioneer DVR-111D firmware revision 1.23. Bought it less than a month ago so I suppose it must have the latest firmware.

DVD playback looks normal as can be. It's just the fast forwarding using my Sony 1080i upconverter player garbles when fast-forwarding. This doesn't happen on my other Sony 480i component DVD player.

DVD playback on PC DVD-ROM using PowerDVD is normal and fast-fowarding at all speeds is normal.

However I noticed something upon insertion of a DL disc. AnyDVD 6.0.8.0 reports that "warning: .bup file location is wrong,. .bup processing disabled." I wonder if that is the root of my problem.

I wasn't able to do playback on my Pioneer DVD-ROM because I couldn't find my location of powerDVD on my PC and it didn't offer the option upon startup (I don't watch DVDs normally on PC).

Any help much appreciated.

Edit: I noticed that for ImgBurn that Pioneer isn't on the list yet I saw it recommended so many times that I bought it. I was considering a BenQ (but didn't need lightscribe) and Plextor (expensive and couldn't find any stock for internal or external). Should I use something else to burn besides Nero or ImgBurn with my Pioneer? I get the feeling that I'm getting most DL problems because I had to upgrade my Nero and Burner at the same time (The Nero bundled with my old Sony burner will not burn with anything but a Sony burner).

Have you got ImgBurn software and AnyDVD? ImgBurn is great for building the ISO and burning it also. Perfect for DL discs. Get ImgBurn here:

yeah I was wondering because I already have AnyDVD.

Browsed the linked pages and I guess I need to firmware upgrade from 1.23 to 1.29. I guess I do that at the Pioneer website.

VJbob,

Your pioneer drive can not booktype DVD5 dvd+r's to dvd-rom without a flash with hacked firmware (buffalo). I do believe however that it does booktype DL DVD+R media to dvd-rom automatically with official pioneer f/w. You can check the booktype of a burned DL disc with dvd identifier.

eric545,

I am glad you are having success burning DL media at 4x and 6x. I prefer to stay at 2.4x because the scans show a lot fewer PIE and PIF errors. The DL media is still so expensive that the extra time to burn doesn't bother me if it assures a good burn. The media and drives are constantly improving so 4x is probably ok in most situations now.

success. ImgBurn and both Ridata and Verbatim DVD+R DL work flawlessly at 2.4x and 4x respectively. No more fast forward issues. From now on I will stay away from Nero when doing DL. Thanks for the help.

The AnyDVD warning from a Nero burned DVD+R DL looks suspicious. I'm wondering if it serious enough to trash and burn again.

Vjbob I have had very little success with DL of any kind. They are a waste of money. I use SL and have never had any reduction in quality or skipping or digitizing. People always say, dont compress. Thats a load of crap. But do whatever.

There is really no reason to use DL media if you edit with dvdremake or VobBlanker and then encode with dvd-rb/cce or procoder2. The only time I use DL media is when I'm combining episodic discs and then I compress the folder down to fit onto a DL disc using dvd-rb/cce of course.

I think the reverse is true. I've seen even RB/CCE seriously bobble lots of stuff. It's especially noticeable on cartoons, where artifacting is especially noticeable. Compression, even by re-encoding, is generally acceptable if you are only going down 10-20%. Beyond that, it can be quite objectionable, depending on your viewing device and the material.

the reason i use DVD+R DL media

1. its a time issue , i don't have time to encode with dvd-rb/cce or procoder2.

2. a DVD-5 cost about 25 cents compared to a DVD-9 costing about 1.75 so its costing me 1.50 when (which isn't very often) to use a DVD-9 blank and i can backup the movie/concert dvd in about 30 to 40 mins. burning at 4x with CloneDVD 2 + anydvd

Just because you are having problems burning DL discs, don't condemn the DL process or discs. Many of us who do DLs occasionally are NOT having any trouble, especially for me with AnyDVD and ImgBurn (100% success rate). Couldn't be easier. Takes about 40 min 2.4X write on either Benqs (1650) or external LG. ImgBurn will rip and create the ISO and then burn it. Try it if you have AnyDVD. And Verbatim DLs are the only DLs I use.

you could use either. I personally don't do Dual Layer (or ISO burns) and happen to use Nero 6.6, only used imgburn once as a test

Creaky's correct. I do most of my Movies using either NeroRecode or Shrink and burn them with Nero. I just use ImgBurn to do EXACT copies on 9Dvds(DLs) or movies which are single layered that don't require (encoding)compression to fit a 4.7dvd. AnyDVD running in background in all methods.

I use DVDShrink to encode my dvds into ".ISO image file" onto the harddrive then use DVDDecrypter to .ISO "write" onto the DL Verbatim disc. Burn at about 2.4x (just to ensure i dont turn an expensive DL into a coaster!) and I have no problems. Playback is fine.

I have been using the Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4X-8X 10pks and just recently started using the Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4X-8X 20pks to backup my DVD collections. I am starting to notice some pixeling during playback with the discs from the 20pk. This did not occur with the discs from the 10pk (150+ discs).

I can burn up to 4X with my NEC 6650A burner, but I use 2.4X 98% of the time since I am only saving about 15 minutes upping the speed but may be taking a higher risk of poorer quality burns.

The main reason why I use DL discs is to avoid compressing the video which will result in a softer/blurred picture. I always check with DVD Shrink or Nero Recode to see if the main title can fit on a DVD-5. Sometime I have to trim the ending credits. If not, then I use a DL disc to backup the DVD.

I use PgcEdit, DVD Decrypter, Nero Recode, DVD Shrink (depending on situations) to create the ISO image and then use ImageBurn to burn the final ISO.
