Hi, I bought this drive on newegg 2 weeks ago and i had 16x verbatim DVD+R disks that i tried burning onto and the drive took a very long time to burn. It took around 13 minutes. I had no other applications open at the time so i thought that there must be something wrong with the drive and i was going to get it replaced. I also updated the firmware so that should not be the problem. I have been really lazy in returning it but recently i bought some 16x TDK DVD-R so i decided to try burning on it today, thinking maybe the media was a problem. It took around 9 minutes to burn and the buffer rates were jumping around like mad. Ive heard that it can burn a whole disk around 5-6 minutes so i think either there is something wrong with my computer or my drive. I just did a Nero CD-DVD Speed test thing and the graph seems to jump all over the place. I am not very good with computers and burners so if anyone could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. Here is a link to the picture of the speedtest: http://www.geocities.com/kenshingtx2000/nerodvd.JPG

Hey, i just got my replacement drive today and it seems to be having the same problem as before. It will burn up to 38% fine and then when it hits 38%, the buffers start going crazy. Theyll drop down to a low % and go back up to 100% and then drop back down and so forth. I saved a log of it. This was burned on a TDK 16x DVD-R.

Ok,
Quote: Nero Version: 6.6.0.19
This version isn't for your drive. Save your serial number and then uninstall Nero. Now run this tool
Tool found here!
Now run both these update packages...
1)
Package 1!
2)
Package 2!
Also,
Quote: Disc Manufacturer: CMC MA - G. AM3
The disks you're using are v bad. Get some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden disks :-)
Quote: Burn process started at 16x (22,160 KB/s)
You're burning too fast. Burn @ 4-8x.
Quote: File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS': Ver=8.0.0.212 , size=2560 bytes, created 5/19/2006 1:16:24 PM
You have Roxio installed. This conflicts with Nero and you don't need it.
Run this tool to get rid of it :-)
Roxio Zapper
Once you've done all that, get back to me if you still have problems.

Thanks for the reply, ill try all those after i get back home today. But i was wondering what you said about burning too fast. Do i have to burn slower because the quality of the disks are bad and i could burn faster on Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim disks or will i never be able to burn fast? The reason i bought the drive was so i could burn faster.

Yes you shouldn't burn fast on those disks. However, you should not burn to those disks at all cos after about 6 months they will become unplayable due to poor manufacturing quality. Also, if you buy Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden (the best brands around) then you can burn @ 16x. It's more common practise to burn @8-12x though. People like to burn at 16x but you get slightly (and I mean slightly) lower quality burns. :-)

I'd scrap Roxio and get rid of it using this tool.
Then, yes, use Nero. You can get the trial free for 30 days. It is well worth having and a class burning app!

This has nothing to do with windows drivers, this is firmware. Windows driver can be updated seperately through windows itself...

No, firmware lets your drive recognise new disks. Drivers are what Windows uses to use your drive.
(That's very simplified ^^)

Hey, I noticed that i still have problems with my burner. I tried burning at 12x on multiple Verbatim DVD+Rs but the used read buffer and read buffer of the burner continue to drop slowly to 0% and then go back up slowly to 100%. It slows down the burn time and my burns tend to take 8-9 minutes long on 12x. Here is a log i saved from a recent burn, thank you for any help you can supply with me:
