Hey Guys,
I've been closely following the progress of what people I can find who are working on backing up Wii games, but there seems to be very little information on the web (that I can find).
My questions/suggestions are these:
Can we collect all of the resources/projects that everyone is following and put them in one place? It might be something "stickyable" if it ends up productive enough.
Also, has anyone messed around with playing Gamecube backup games? I know that on the gamecube, one could swap out the Mini-dvd tray with a full size and play standard DVDs. Being that the Wii plays standard dvds out of the box, I figured it might be capable of playing backed up gamecube games.
So, to summarize this post...
Where do you look for Wii Backup Project Updates?
What do y'all know about playing Gamecube backups on the Wii?

no gamecube backups sorry the reason the gamecube disk format would have to be wrriten in the backwards format that the gamecube reads not the forward format the the gamecube copys burn in this is why you have to have a mod chip
and the only thing i have seen so far is a bunch of garbage movies with things like download your own roms to the wii which i know is impossible becase you cannot write your own channels

ugggh. THE GAMECUBE DOESN'T SPIN DISKS BACKWARDS!!!! That is a myth!!
From wikipedia:
Quote: A common misconception about the GameCube optical drive is that it spins the discs in reverse (counter-clockwise) from normal disc drives (which spin clockwise). The peculiarity of this rumor is that one need only open the disc tray on an operating GameCube to see that the disc clearly spins clockwise as it slows to a halt.

I thinking he is talking about that it burns in reverse order...
Anyway, I am going to keep an eye out on this thread/forum. I would like to see someone figure out how to play gamecube backups on the Wii.

yes thank you the gamecube disks are written backwards on purpose and untill someone devolopes a program to write them that way there is no way to truly get backups to work

How come someone has not just made a program that burns the data in reverse order?

good question
it is a question that many people have asked because look at the xbox iso creator for the xbox 1 someone figured out how to tell the cd rom burner to burn in a specific order to boot xbox games and homebrew on the regular xbox but no one has develop it for the gamecube
sucks huh also because a lot of gamecube titles you have to rip using pso or other hacks you do not know which file after the stream is the original boot file
?? weird huh

I found this...
Lots of reading. Near as I can tell, it *kind of* works. I'd expect to see some more out of this in the coming months if more people took a gander.

okay, what i was thinking was that people need to try using the MAXDRIVE Procedure to boot GC backups and Homebrew. I personally can't do it because i can't get my hands on a Wii.

Just because it's on Wikipedia, doesn't make it true. It's an open-source site; meaning people like you and me created it. It's hardly infallible. There have been several revisions of the system, and they're not all the same.

Yes he knows that im sure, but it is still very reliable and that particular piece of information he quoted from is true.

Im definitely keeping an eye out for this too, I've read that PCs can't even read Wii discs at this point, so a simple DVD decryptor job is useless...as far as the Gamecube goes, I know there is a gamecube disc out that allows you to play backup/import games, but I have no clue how to backup gamecube games.

Ey guys what do you think about this? I was surfing and it seems that there is a hd loader by software and a modchip that at least loads gamecube backups. (I dont know if it also loads wii backups).
If someone trys the hd loader or order the modchip please share with us the experience.
Here is the DVD-R.htm" target="_blank">link

Bumping this to get some more information. I've seen some videos of people playing backups on Youtube like this one.
It could be a fake, but who knows? Anyone have some more information?

Reverse order or not, this would be trivial to correct for. Although, I do not even know for sure if it is really written backwards.

For GameCube: The issue seems to have something to do with the bar code encryption seed in Burst Cutting Area of the disc. I am not sure why, however, one is not able to simply do a byte for byte dump of encrypted data (whether it is useless or not).
I am checking into this. Somehow, I feel that I/O routines are not dumping indiscriminately and are attempting to interpret the data or data order. I haven't ever written RTL for ASICs on CD I/O hardware, unfortunately, so I am not sure. In Linux flavors you can do dumps without ever mounting a filesystem, so I will check into the problems I run into doing manual dumps.

Laxington, I am glad you have said what I am lightly trying to imply. I guess I should be more forward :P lol. I was trying to get others to 'come' to this conclusion.
Anyhow, it wouldn't matter either way, as I stated, so it is trivial. Byte orders are shifted everyday, even if you don't know about it (Big Endian/Little Endian to Network Byte Order for transmission over network, etc). These bit orderings are VERY trivial, and Endianness and overall data order is easy to correct for and it would not make backups harder or serve as any sort of security.
It is like reading a sentence backwards, do you think if it was intercepted, someone could read it lol :) I wish people thought about these things before rumors ran wild, oh well.
It is still interesting, and I am glad others (young and old) are active in discussions of engineering/comp science (even if they don't realize it).
