Burning VCD Q's using 1 CD-RW?

Hi,
I want to know if im able to copy and make backup of my VCD series/movies using only one CD-RW? I want to make copies of them using CD-R media.
This is because i don't have another CD drive installed to burn using CD-CD mode. I would like to not spend any money on a CD-ROM drive.
I just builded my new system with a Lite-On LTR-52246S CD-RW, but im noob when it comes to VCD ripping, encoding/decoding etc. :(
Am i able to burn a VCD using one CD-RW burner and Nero? How do i go about doing this and is there some type of simple way to do what i want? Since i have one CD-RW and no other CD drives can i somehow burn an image of a VCD to my HD and then burn it into a CD-R? What should i do? I think Nero doesn't have copy CD image mode to HD. It only record CD images to CD-R. How about CloneCD? Any guides and instructions to do what i want?

Yes its very easy actually, if you just go to the CD-Copy wizard in Nero, with only 1 drive it will automatically extract an image of the cd then will eject it and ask for a blank to write to!

Hi, thx for the reply.
I like to use the Nero Express since it simplies things much easier. You said i could use the "Copy entire Disc" mode, but what do i need for these settings like my destination drive? For the Source Drive it has only Lite-On LTR-52246S [CD-R/RW] available. But for Destination Drive there's two options available one is Image Recorder [CD-R/RW] and Lite-On LTR-52246S [CD-R/RW]. In the manual it didn't mention about these or what i should put.
Also it wouldn't burn onto the VCD would it when pressing "burn"? I just want the VCD image extracted from the VCD to the HD and then use it to make another VCD CD-R copy. But it doesn't even ask for a location to save it. I haven't gone pass the "Burn" button yet so i dunno after that. And what is the recommended writing speed to choose for accomplishing what i need? I read that slower write is better since it is more stable and produce less errors or bad CD-Rs.
I used Nero Version - 5.5.10.9 bundled software that came with the burner. So is it fine with this version and no bugs correct? It didn't came with a serial key.

Your source and burner should be set as the same and then it will copy to the hard drive first then the cd!

ok but will it ask for a path to store my VCD image file after i press "burn"? Where does it go anyway?
Or will it ask for the CD-R right away after creating the image file?
I haven't gone passed the "Burn" button just want to make and don't want to make coaster CD-Rs if something does up due to my settings.

Alternative method is to use a free burning software called burnatone. Simply read the VCD image (RAW RW Subs) and save the file format as .cue (Cue Sheet) not cdrdao . When all finished open burnatonce and burn the cue at 8x.

Obviously you would do the above after you've created your VCD to 1 cd-r(w).

I wouldnt actually use Nero to copy a VCD at all. I use Alcohol for almost all of my copying, never had one problem from it! yet! :-)

Well burnatonce is free, Alcohol 120% costs money. burnatonce gets the job done (hehe)..

thx for the replies everyone.
Well i tested it on a CD-RW and i got it working using Dela's method and i couldn't believe it. But wouldn't this cause me not to save the original image file?
Shoey, i was planning on using your method if della didn't work. I just didn't want to go through a new program if there's a familiar one i can use. Although i did saved your instructions for that program for future reference. :)
Oh yeah if i plan on doing backup of my WinXP cd or other old OS discs will Della's method work the same way and make those operating system bootable with CD-ROM?
When reading the help on Nero Express -> Data -> Bootable data disc, this feature only makes bootable CDs with bootable files copied from the A: drive. This got me confused thinking it could create backup of OS.

Hi!
actually you can copy all CDs in that way, audio, data and VCD. Anyway Nero will fail to copy some protected CDs such as games etc. You can try CloneCD, it's not free but it will copy just everything. The boot-CD is an option for creating a boot-CD from files you already have (such as a boot disk of Win98). The WinXP is bootable, if you copy it by the same way you copied the VCD it will still be bootable. It's an 1:1 exact copy. Again, I suggest CloneCD or as Dela said Alchohol 120%.

I've read countless VCD guides and in all of them the author never mentions burning the encoded vcd (mpeg1) files to 1 cd-r(w). Now if it's a short clip or episode sure, but a full length movie, I really wonder.....

I do that a lot since my parents like to watch movies on the standalone/tv and i prefer watching on computer... I spend a bunch of time burning (S)VCDs onto RWs so that I dont actually 'waste' discs so to speak.
I cant think of a major problem with having (S)VCDs on RW discs aside from the fact that the majority of RW media is 650MB (although they do have 700MB discs) but in other cases, its the same as burning on CDRs.

Well my question is what program and encoder can encode a full length movie to VCD (mpeg1) file format at 700 megabytes? I'm not aware of any.......I know it can be done DivX (mpeg4) as I've backed up a few samples.

Hi again...
I ran into some trouble with making backups of my Windows 98 SE and Windows XP. I used the same VCD method for burning these bootables CDs like afonic descbribed.
(The method was Nero Express -> Copy Entire Disc -> Source + Destination Drive set to the same.)
It proceeded and burned fine. I though i can tell by putting in the CD even though it didn't pop out any menus i was able to browse the CD and all the files are intact.
However just today i wanted to reinstall my sister's old computer so i tried using the Win98 backup CD and it didn't work. I set the BIOS to boot to CDROM, but it can't detect the backup Win98 from the CD-ROM. The screen sometimes freezes or says is not bootable.
But the strange thing is I used my Windows 2000 Pro backup CD and I popped it in and it detected and was just fine. It proceeded to load the long setup.
So what gives though?? Did i do anything wrong making my backup process? I guess the Win XP cd is the same... i wasted 2 good Fuji CD-Rs. :(
Well the next time i see my friend and give it back to him i'll ask how he did it. I remember he told me he uses Nero as well. I know he has 2 drives so could it be that he is using the CD to CD method and it worked?

I've never encountered any boot errors of my backups of Win98 SE/WinMe/Win2k Pro/WinXP Corp.
I've used various media and various software programs as well m8. Try Nero cd copy to copy (on the fly).

I can't do copy CD to CD with only one CDRW burner and i use it to read cd-roms too.
That is why i created this thread asking if i could use 1 CD-RW burner to create VCD backup.
Well its my fault sorry about the bad topic description. I forgot to add in i was talking about a CD-RW burner. That's why i think some ppl got confused and thought i was takling about making backup of VCD on CD-RW medias...?
Anyway i'll try asking a friend on how he accomplish backing up his OS. Or maybe i'll try using another type of software? Maybe CloneCD? I think its free i'll go search around for something simple and easy to use i guess...
Shoey, what method do you use in Nero? CD-CD on the fly using 4x-8x or something? I guess Nero Express -> Data -> Bootable Data Disc wouldn't work quite well for me would it? I see it requires a floppy if i click "Next".
