AVI to VCD sound break up

I have some small AVI files from my camera. They transfer and play perfect from my hard drive, or from my usb flash card. But when I try to copy them onto a cd disc, it seems as if the the file has transfered too slow and the sound is distorted and breaking up. If I convert them to mpeg they are fine. But I wanted to keep them as AVI on disc. I have windows XP and I use the WIndows XP wizard to burn to disc.
I have the same problem on all three computers that I have. I'm not great at understanding codecs and things.

Can anyone help with my problem
