Ok for anyone who thinks it is not possible to play backups on an unaltered PSX I have news it is possible and I have become quite good at it so I thought I would make a guide on it as there are so many psx ISO's that do not play at full speed besides playing the games on PSX is a much better experience lets start off with the basics...
What you will need...
1)A PSX Console (unmodded) you wont need this guide if it is unless you are just wondering about how to burn your iso's to play on the console
2)Alcohol 120% (or Damon tools) will explain later
3)CloneCD
4)a paper clip (can substitute for something else) will go into that later as well
5)an actual psx game (any game should do) but must be an original copy in order to make this work
Ok lets start with the console...
If you open up the lid you will see a button towards the back right of the console this is your sensor to let the PSX know the CD Tray is either open or shut so the first step is to trick the PSX into thinking that it is closed... The way I have mine setup is by taking a paper clip and bending it into a shape that you can wedge under the corner of the tray while it is open and hold the button down but if you are creative enough you can come up with your own way such as a wad of paper and tape or whatever you have available I have been told a tiny piece of a cereal box cardboard can be wedged between the button and the walls of the button so what ever it takes to get it to work when you feel you have gotten a solid way to keep the button down test it out with your original to make sure it loads if not your button is not pressed down all the way...
Lets go on to making a backup as you know you must own the original to have a back up but we will just assume that you do for whatever reason your disk is damaged or unusable you can download an ISO so there are two ways to make a back up from here if your original works and you just want to preserve the disk you can use it to make a direct backup or backup from an ISO
1) If you are making a backup from disk you don't need Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools You can just use clone cd to directly back it up (note when you back up a game you cant just put it in and play so please read this whole post to understand what it is you need to do in order to play these games)
Personally I use Alcohol 120% which creates an ISO drive that you can read the ISO directly from...(for those with less experience an ISO is the entire contents of a CD an exact duplication of it) thus is why you need an ISO drive so to speak once you get Alcohol 120% installed and have a drive running you need to mount the ISO image... If you have EPSXE or whatever psx emulator you chose you can test the iso from the iso drive (virtual drive) if it works then you are ready to burn...
2) Burning your iso (you will need a cdburner obviusly and a blank CDR Go for quality on this so far i have used memorex's 52x and had no problems) once clone cd is installed click on the copy cd icon and select your virtual drive for the read options and select game disk (not protected pc game just game) then make sure you select 1x write speed i found that at 4x disks become unreadable the sony laser is weak hell its old technology right!!! anyway once you have all these options placed click on the button to burn it (sorry doing this from memory so if my visuals are off the info is still right) then it will burn your iso to disk when finished you can also test it on your emulator from your drive it should work but the tricky part comes next... NOTE (do not use any other media besides CDR as the PSX laser cannot handle CDRW or DVD media this is really important)
3) Actually booting this disk is a little tricky for those worried about their laser or their motor on the PSX there is really nothing to worry about you will get the hang of it after a few times doing this successfully see the drive is magneticly driven so dont be alarmed by removing the cd while it is still spinning... ok here is how it works....
a) Put in any original psx disk and turn on the power the PSX white screen will come up your disk will be spinning watch the disk and listen to the motor the disk will start to spin faster now you have to be quick when the disk starts to spin faster you need to remove the original and replace it with a backup if done right the PSX menu will change black with the PSX logo now your sounds should be properly loaded into memory and I believe this is where it loads video data at the black screen the disk will slow down so watch carefully now let it speed up again and finaly it will slow down again when it slows for the second time take the original and put it back in for a brief second if done right the screen will change to all black no logo or anything instantly and i mean real fast you need to put the backup back in and bang your game should load I have however had a few problems with a couple games that would not load so I have a backup of Gameshark I do the same trick with and once gameshark is in and loaded you can select cheats or not but you can use it to boot disks too but you need to keep the button pressed the entire time that you are doing this if the button is released it will search for an original disk again if you feel uncomfortable running your psx with the lid up after the game is running i would suggest that you find a way to keep the button down so that you can close the lid superglue tape or cardboard I was thinking of doing the same myself but have been kinda lazy and dont mind the lid being up but hey if you need any further help or get stuck after all I have said feel free to message me and I will see what i can do to help you get through it... It took me a while to get it right and now I can do it everytime unless of course im distracted but it works 100% and the PSX i use is not modded in anyway Hope this Guide is helpfull I will run support if needed EnJoy!!!!!

sorry it took so long lol i just wanted to play ff7 again on the psx but my disk is so scratched i couldnt get it to read on my computer so i got the iso and researched everything i could to make it run on the psx and well it was alot of digging and searching so i thought i would put together my end results hope anyone else may find it usefull...

One big problem.. You need the original game, any old ps1 game won't do, the TOC needs to be identical.
The game needs to actually load, as in.. For tomb raider for instance the only point where the disk spins down slow enough for a swap to be attempted is on the menu screen. As the disk is still spinning you have to grab the spinning disk and quickly swap it before the ps1 gets wise to the fact the disk has gone.
There is risk of damage to the original disk, the burn, the ps1 spindle motor and your eyes. Monitoring the voltage on the focus coils shows a huge spike when the disk is removed.. way above the max 4v, and often up to 12v or so.. obviously this isn't good for the laser head assembly, but these things cost next to nothing these days so WTH..
This way of doing a disk swap has been known for years.. use at your own risk. There was another guide to exactly the same trick a few weeks ago..
PS1 games are getting difficult to find.. do you really want to risk a hard to replace original when ps1 action replay disks can be found for £0.50?

actually the disk is spun magneticly and as for spinning speed you arent waiting for it to stop if you are carefull and follow the directions to a t you will get it i play all my backups off the original tonyhawk proskater 2 and so far a title of games i have sucesfully played using this method include...
Spyro 1
Spyro 3
Medievil 1
Final Fantasy 7
Soul Blade
Grand Tourismo 2
Game Shark V.5
Legend Of Mana
Medal Of Honor
2 disks of Nintendo Games emulated with IBNES
(coming soon FF8,ff9,and Oddworld)
like it says first put the original in and watch the disk spin it will speed up not much faster but it is noticeable and when it does immediatly switch disks (this is on the White logo screen) when done right it will go to the black screen but dont stray your eyes from the disk too long and listen to your drive it will slow down briefly and speed back up then slow down one more time at your second slow down replace it with the original (screen will go black if done right) then when the screen turns black quickly switch back to the copy and there you have it this isnt going to ruin the laser or the disk unless you make it a habbit of putting the media part of the disk on the spindle while it is spining and i will say that yes sometimes the disk will get scratched doing this but it is mostly in the center of the disk not where the media is and by the center of the disk i mean right where the hole in the cd is yes the disk will still be spinning when swapping them and yes it works eventually when i get a better web cam i will post a video of it being done untill then if you have any other questions or comments i will be glad to answer them as i consider myself to be an expert on this method of swapping so hope the info helps and have fun...

OK, I followed your directions and it still does not want to work. I think it's the brand of CDs I am using. They are Verbatim 52x CD-R. The program I use to burn them is Alcohol 120% on play station datatype mode.

you cant use dvd material think that was up there need to be cdr only not cdrw or dvd of anykind as psx has a weak laser try burning onto a cdr should work then let me know if you need anymore help

ok did you burn at 1x speed and which game were you writing it may need to be patched if its a PAL and your playing on an NTSC system for instance you need to patch an iso copy of it first there is a PAL to NTSC patcher and there are various protected games that need protection bypass patches if you are having trouble i would suggest making a burnt iso of gameshark v.5 and running that first but timing is real important when the original disk spins just the second it starts to spin faster pull the disk and replace it (indiana jones and the temple of doom style) will spin fast slow briefly spin fast and slow briefly pull the disk replace it with the original and then screen goes black i would say almost immediately after you put the original on switch it again back to your copy and it should boot there if you get the black screen and it still doesnt load you havent switched fast enough the second time if it stays on the black screen with the logo you didnt switch it at the second pause correctly like i said timing is everything it took me quite a few frusrated attempts before i got it make sure you listen to your drive so you can hear the speed changes this can be hard to do if you got your volume up so i would suggest that you turn the volume off untill you get the disk to boot so pretty much the way it looks is as follows....
1)original disk speeds up white logo screen comes on disk spins normal or 1x then speeds to 2x
2)while origin is starting to make the 2x speed up... immediately remove the original and as fast as humanly possible replace it with the backup
3)backup will spin at 2x the screen will change to black logo the disk will slow (a brief stutter((this is when the laser changes positioning)) so listen close) it will speed to 2x again and then slow (the brief stutter again ((laser has changed positions again)) listen close )
4)as the back up slows for the second time (while making the brief stutter) change to the original which will change the background screen to all black with no logo
5)this is where you have to be fast cause just as soon as you put the original back on you need to take it back off and put the backup back on if you can manage that your disk will boot...
UNLESS you have done one of the following...
a)gotten a bad iso copy i recommend trying your copy on an emulator before burning it
b)you are using a PAL iso on an NTSC psx
c)you have burned the disk at a rate higher than 1x
d)you are using cd-rw or dvd media
e)the game has modchip protection and needs to be patched it is best to check ahead of time if you think it may be
And i would reccomend that after you burn your disk you try it on your emulator as well to make sure that it works there it is possible that you have an old laser that is at the end of its line and may have a hard time reading anything good luck if you are still having trouble give me an event of what all is going on at your end so i may be able to give you better tips keep prcticing and soon you will master this technique as i have

by the way i wouldnt recomend burning with Alcohol 120 try using clone cd if you need a copy i can send you mine just let me know dont want you wasting alot of disks so far i have only wasted 6 but that is a thing of the past since i have gotten it down pat well good luck let me know how it goes

I CAN NOT believe that this worked in the first try, I will tell you exactly how it worked for me.
SCPH 9000 model PS1
legit copy of Gram Turismo 1 (GH)
backup copy of Vagrantstory from .img file
burned with Alcohol 120% @ 8x speed
I know that the speed was too high but it was the slowest speed on my HP CD writer 9100 series, it works though apparently.
I followed the instructions exactly, noting the changes of speed and so forth, having a not-so perfect PS1 might have helped because it makes a little more noise and you can better tell what the motor is doing.
the procedure went as followed:
-put legit copy in, turn on power
-at white sony screen with orange logo motor speeds up, put in backup copy immediately
-with backup copy inside black playstation logo screen comes up and during its presence on-screen the PS1 engine speeds up once and then stops for a second, then it speeds up again and stops for a second. during the SECOND stop-time I inserted the Legit PS1-CD until the screen turned completely black. then VERY FAST put my backup back in.
**note: Before actually putting the backup copy back into the PS1 for the second time, I already had the Vagrant story "now loading" screen on my TV.
thanks a lot for the how-to and sorry for the redundance of repeating the procedure, but people who cant do this probably need as many iterations of these instructions as it takes to make them understand. awesome trick! thanks again.

Still can't see what's "awesome" about a disk swap.. We have been doing this since 98/99 at least. This isn't the first thread or "guide" to doing it. There is one every few months.
This one happens to be a lot better written than most to the point where it can be followed and works. I will still continue to point out that you are gaining nothing at all by swapping disks like this, apart from increased risk to your valuable original.
The only reason I can see is if your original is so badly damaged that it won't play after loading, or crashes a certain way in.. Chances are a copy will do exactly the same.
Go ahead, as I said earlier this kit is cheap as chips and your backups should be playable on a modded ps2 also.

well on that level ps2's are hard to mod and require precise soldering since you have to solder to chips unless you spend nearly $100 on a solderless chip i do installs on these and this is by far the cheapest way to play your backup ISO on a real system that will give you the intended gaming experience of the original game it is my intention by this guide to help anyone who has had trouble understanding any previous guide written as many of them were written by foreigners who's english is less than desirable and a little shakey with detail sorry that my punctuation is a little less than existant but this is how i am used to typing i am getting slowly in the habbit of wording things a little more orderly as runons become a little bit hard to understand at times but i am in the process of learning to make an mmorpg server and getting help is a bit hard with foreigners trying to understand this style of writing as it is my own but i do hope that this guide serves a purpose to those who can understand i will continue running support for it though to anyone who really wants to make it work and to the guy running with grand turismo and vagrant story sorry to have forgotten your name so soon im in a mail client server and not in my Firefox at the moment so cant just look it up good job i am glad that this works for you as well take care everyone and happy gaming...

I have a question. What do you do when you are playing a game with more than one disk? Are you out of luck or do you do the same thing as when you load the disk at startup?

Hey i haven't come across this yet but i would guess it would be the same thing but i cant be quoted yet when i do run across this i will update but i figure you would boot first with the original till it starts to speed 2x then switch after second slow down briefly put original on and switch back would think it would be the same though i really was just hoping that i could swap disks and push a button but if you come to this before me let me know what you find i actually am out of cdr's at the moment and am not close enough to disk two on ff7 to attempt it and i haven't burned any 2nd disks yet but if i do by chance manage to get some more and make it to this point i will let you know what i find...

Thanks. There are some PS1 games I am happy to now be playing. Those games won't work fully on PSP or a PSX emulator. =] Thanks to your guide I can get to playing some classics.

thanks for the info. i had to watch a youtube swap disk movie to get the timing right. link
this method works for me using motoracer 1 to play NTSC chronocross & roadrash on a PAL psone:
wait 1 second after it spins up to 2x speed & swap.
when it slows down & the heads make a clicking noise, wait another 3 seconds then swap.
as soon as screen goes completely black, swap.

actually you could but you would have to patch it first before you burn it. if it is NTSC i think it should play if you have an NTSC unit if you have a PAL they have conversion patches just try googleing it...

Hmm, the method works fine and the game loads. its just that the loading times are rediculous! For instance, it takes 5 minutes for the main screen in Beatmania 6th mix to pop up and then like 10 minutes after I select a song it loads. Then after the songs over another 10 minutes goes by and the results screen shows up, etc. What the hell is going on?
Note: this is a burned game.
