It could be a defect in the disk.

Are your copies of AnyDVD and CloneDVD up to date?

Try ripping the disk to your HDD with DVDFab Decrypter. Then follow this guide:

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/backup%20with%20DVDFABDecrypter,S...

Hello.

As you can see from this thread, there are many possible causes ranging from a bad piece or hardware, conflicting/corrupted software, out of date software/firmware, poor quality media, etc.

Here's some general things to get you started.

Do you have any Roxio software installed? If so, uninstall it and run the Roxio Zapper. Nero and Roxio drivers can conflict.

http://tools.roxio.com/support/tools/roxizap.exe

Run the Nero 6 Clean Tool to remove Nero. Be sure to write down your program serial number.

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/us/Nero_6_CleanTool.html

Then run the Driver Cleaner Tool and the Registry Checker. Pay attention to the instructions on the linked page.:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/us/Driver_CleanTool_and_RegistryChecker.html

Reinstall Nero version 6.6.0.18 located here:

Pack 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

Pack 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

If you have Nero 7, download the Nero 7 Clean Tool and Driver Clean Tool from the link below and run them:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero7_CleanTool.html

Reinstall Nero 7.0.8.2 from here:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/?845

You need to also check for firmware updates for your burner. You can either locate it yourself at the site below or at your burner's manufacturer's web site:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

If you've used Nero since the problem first developed, it would be a good idea to post the NeroHistory log back to this thread. You need only to post the section that deals with a failed burn due to finding no medium. Nero maintains the log for the last several burns attempted. Each section begins as follows:

====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======
Your name (delete before posting)

1A***************** (your program serial number, delete before posting)

Windows XP 5.1
IA32
WinAspi: -
ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 10/26/2004

Be sure to delete the program serial number and your name before posting the log.

The log is in one of these paths:
Nero 6: Program Files > Ahead > Nero > NeroHistory
Nero 7: Program Files > Nero > Nero7 > Core > NeroHistory

Hello.

Edit out your program serial number by clicking the paper/pensil icon in the upper right of your post.

File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS': Ver=7.5.0.50 , size=24960 bytes, created 9/7/2005 2:32:58 PM

This is a Roxio driver. Run Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panels and delete any Roxio programs. Then run the Roxio zapper. The link is in the post above to the zapper.

Recorder: <PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105> Version: 1.21

There's a newer firmware, version 1.33 for yor burner here:

Edit: correct link
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pio/pe/images/portal/cit_3424/2...

Click on the firmware to download to your computer. Double click the downloaded file to open it. It will extract the flasher stuff to a folder. Open the folder and follow the instructions in the readme or execute the flasher program.

I haven't seen Nero 5 in a long time. Nero 6 won't sccept a Nero 5 serial number. Try the above first and see if that solves your problem. Otherwise, run the Nero 5 Clean Tool and then install the trial version of Nero 6.6.0.18. It'll be the same download as before, just use it as a trial for 30 days.

It's quite possible the drive is bad as well. Is there another computer available it can be installed in for testing? If it doesn't work there, it's likely the drive. The drive is a bit long in the tooth. They're down in the $30US range these days. If you have an external enclosure you could mount it in there and take it to another computer and test it as well.

You might try backing up your data, reformatting your HDD, and reinstalling the OS. You could also pick an OS restore point back in the past when everything worked.

ok....
Up until this problem occurred I had used Nero 5.5.10.7 in which I had burned probably 400 dvds......
Last week, my dvd rw drive would not recognize the same discs in which I had previously been usinig. I tried other brands with no success.

I've tried the firmware update for my pioneer drive in which I get a "target not found error".
I've tried the Nero cleaner.
I've tried to download the Nero 6.6 from the link but when I try to install it I don't have a compatible serial number.
I've tried the Nero 7.whatever demo but it too will not recognize media.
After uninstalling all Nero programs, Ive tried Roxio easy media 7 with no success.
the only media my drive recog. is cd-r's.....
Ive run adaware, virus scan , defragged and disk cleanup....
Sometimes, when I put a DVD-R in , my computer crashes or bogs down severely......
again, all help is really appreciated!

Did you use the Nero Clean Tools before installing new versions of Nero?

There's likely a conflicting/corrupted driver somewhere.

At this point, here are the options.

The fact that the firmware flasher can't ID the drive indicates a serious problem. Either the drive is bad or there is something wrong with the device drivers. The options are limited it seems.

First try flashing a firmware other than the latest and see if the drive will accept that. If so, keep going to the next newest firmware, etc.

Try going back to a restore point in the OS when everything worked.

Take the drive out and install it in another computer and see if it works there.

Reinstall the OS to a reformatted drive after backing up what needs saving.

I prefer BenQ and NEC mainly because firmware updates are usually available. If you want to go external, there are two ways to do it. Buy an OEM external or buy an internal and put in into an external enclosure yourself. I prefer the latter approach myself. Both the BenQ 1655 and the NEC 3550 seem to be good drives. Lots of people like the Philips drives but as I'm in the U.S. I don't see many of those except for OEM installs in some systems. Many use the Lite-On drives but they've never been very good performers for me. I dislike the Panasonic/Matshita, the Samsung, and the off brands. I guess a lot depends on where you're located and what's available. In the U.S. I prefer to use Newegg.com as a vendor. Many brand name drives are actually manufactured by others so it's a good idea before purchasing a Sony or Maxell or Memorex, etc. to find out who the actual manufacturer is. As for external enclosures, I prefer Plumax and Bytecc. I've had good luck with both. If you have firewire, I'd get a combo external enclosure with both firewire and USB2 ports. Firewire performs a little better than USB2, but the difference is really not important.`

I just got a new BenQ 1655 external (encasing is the Galazy):

http://www.meritline.com/combo-benq-dw1655-and-galaxy-5-25-enclos...

I had some trouble with the case and sent it back because my computer wasn't recognizing it as a lightscribe burner. After much reading and googling and contacting Lightscribe.com I found out that the Nero OEM version 6.6.0.14 was raising havic on my computer and also found out that Nero rest a registry entry that the value should have been "0" but was "1" so they showed me how to change it back. Too bad I already sent in for replacement! LOL but when it comes back I'm sure it will work now..... here are the first two disks that I burned with the BenQ:

95 & 96 quality scores aren't bad for a new drive.... and with the QSuite 2.1 with SolidBurn..... it will learn the disks and make better writing strategies in the future! the more you use the better it gets! soooooo I can't wait to get the 1655 back!

Hi all,

Hope I'm not too late to get some help in this thread. I have a pretty similar problem, in that my DVD burner will work fine with CD's, DVD-R, and DVD+R, but cannot read or erase RW's, even ones created on it. :(

My set up:

An older Sony Vaio desktop with an older but lightly used sony DVD RW DW-U14A and a separate DVD Rom drive. I updated the firmware driver (I think it was 2.0e or something like that) from the Sony website but it didn't fix my problem.

I have Nero 6.6.0.1, as well as Alcohol 120% and the Drag and Drop program my Vaio came with. I don't recall ever having any Roxio software but ran the zapper just to be safe.

The media in question is Memorex 4x +RW. But before anyone gets too hung up on that, let me explain. The discs I'm using were burnt with my burner and are fine. I can put them in my DVD Rom drive and they are recognized. When I put them in the burner, however, it refuses to read them. Their properties say they have 0 bytes. None of my software can erase them. this problem has started within the last few months so I think it's software conflict, but I'm not positive. The drive still burns fully functional DVD-R and DVD+R which play fine in my DVD players or my PC. It's just like it stopped understanding the RW concept. It's very frustrating b/c I have several videos I'd rather watch on my TV but don't want to keep forever. Mostly TV shows the Mrs. wants to see once.

What other information can I provide and what would you suggest as my next steps? Thanks in advance.

Rob

Oh, by the way, I did confirm that the DMA setting is not turned off. I think the only thing in this thread I haven't tried is changing Nero. I wanted to see if there was enough difference between 6.6.0.1 and 6.6.0.1.8 to be worth the hassle since the build numbers are so close.

I have a 1620 and had the same problem of it not working/recognising discs... I had to manually set the drive to CD/DVD in the BIOS of the computer...rather than just set to auto detect. When firing up the computer usually you look for the command to enter the setup(usually pressing delete) go in there and change you drive to CD/DVD...that worked for mine. let me know if it works.

Thank you for the prompt response. I managed to access the bios (F2 on my system).

I see the DVD-RW drive. In terms of detection, I have 3 choices. Auto (which it was on), CDRom and "ARMD". I tried both the other choices and nothing changed unfortunately.

The only other options under the drive are "PIO Mode" which is on auto but can be set from zero to four, and DMA Mode. DMA Mode is currently on auto but includes choices SWDMA0 to SWDMA2, MWDMA0-MWDMA2, and UDMA0 to UMDA2. I didn't mess with either PIO or DMA mode, as it sounded like you were talking about the first setting.

Anything else I should try in the bios based on this? Thanks!

Hello.
Quote:

The drag and drop software is packet writing driver level software and can conflict with other drivers like Nero's.

Do you also have Nero's InCD installed. That often causes problems and is recommended for uninstalling as well. Use the Nero InCD Clean Tool:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/us/InCD_CleanTool.html

You should probably update Nero to version 6.6.0.18 from the two links below. Run the Nero 6 Clean Tool first. With Nero there were huge differences between 6.6.0.6 and 6.6.0.18, let alone between 6.6.0.1. We recommend upgrading from 6.6.0.14 and that's a lot closer than your build. Upgrading Nero may not solve your problem though.

Ok, I've removed Drag and Drop through the remove programs, removed Nero, run the clean tools, and reinstalled the versions linked above. So far no change -- still won't recognize my RW discs. I'm guessing something else is causing a conflict and that I'm going to have to wait until I can format my drive and rebuild it step by step to figure out what. That's going to have to wait though as I have to burn a bunch of TV shows for my mother-in-law. I could back them up more quickly, but without rewriteables, that's just such a waste. If I can ultimately figure out what caused it, I'll be sure to post back. If anyone else has suggestions for things to try in the meantime, I'd be more than glad to hear them. Thanks for the help so far. It was nice to at least have some new things to try, and I'll probably be better off in the long run with the better version of Nero.
