After searching high and low trying to find an answer to my blank DVD-Rs not being recognised, I stumbled upon someone who suggested wiping the lens with cotton wool and alcohol, and lo and behold, it done the trick. I hope this works for some of you people out there.

I have a Dell notebook with SONY DVD+RW
DW-D56A DVD/CD
I had trouble burning DVDs years back and
stopped using them
I could get by with CDs
It even stopped reading the DVDs it had burnt
long back
In between, I had a harddisk crash and got
that changed.
The problem persisted
My computer showed dvd-rw drive e which
changes to cd when a dvd is put in and it
shows the dvd to be blank
DVD region not selected
I checked lower and upper filters. There was
no upper filter and the lower filter was
Pxhelp20
I downloaded the firmware rar file and changed
it from pd57 to pfs3
I also downloaded from this site, the zipped
files for "filters off" and "filters on" and
also the "filters check"
I switched off filters, the problem persisted.
I switched on filters, and they became The
Upper Filters are:
GEARAspiWDM
The Lower Filters are:
Pxhelp20
but then on rebooting, the dvd drive has
disappeared and device manager shows a yellow
mark against my SONY DVD+RW

Hi, I like others on this thread have just lost the use of my DVD Burner. It can no longer read blank DVDs but has no problem with blank CDs.
I too have lost the use of my DVD Burner, it no longer recognizes blank DVDs. My problems all started when I installed the K-Lite Codec Mega Pack. It fixed my AVI to MPG problem and made my PVR work better. When I rebooted my PC, the Media Center Receiver Service (ehRecvr.exe) started and then took over my PC for almost 3 hours. I finally ended the process to get my machine back. (Having never seen this service before, why would it suddenly start? I have since disabled this service). Then, when I tried to burn a DVD, the disc was no longer recognized by the system.
I have done all the things suggested on this thread (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/14/350168), except for reinstalling Windows, but nothing worked. I went out and bought different makes of DVD-R and DVD+R but they didn't work either. I went out and bought an external USB DVD Burner, thinking that maybe my internal DVD Burner has bit the dust, but the new burner had the same problems. I uninstalled all my burning software; I uninstalled the K-Lite Codec Pack; still nothing worked. I re-installed the K-Lite Codec Pack; I downloaded ImgBurn and to my surprise, I was able to burn one disc from a previously created .iso file but when ImgBurn tried to verify the disc, it could no longer find it. (BTW, the created disc works fine in my DVD Player.) I then decided to purchase Cyberlink's PowerDirector software, thinking that maybe I would have more luck. Not a chance, it didn't recognize the blank DVD either.
Being convinced that the K-Lite Codec Pack has done something to my system, I used the Codec Tweak Tool to see what all the Codecs looked like and what they were doing. Imagine my surprise when all the PowerDirector Codecs, some Microsoft Codecs and some of my PVR Codecs were labelled DO_NOT_USE.
The full text file is over 3000 lines, I'm including a few (I have transferred the data to columns in an Excel spreadsheet for ease of use and I can forward if required) but I am not an audio/video expert, it's all geek to me. Would someone please look over the data and let me know if any of the Codecs, DLLs etc. could have affected my DVD burner. I would really love to have my DVD Burner back!!!!

No luck . I downloaded the update but still can't burn . My drives both say " CD drive" and the burner won't recognise DVD discs.
Any other ideas ?

Install your drive in another system to make sure it actually works. If it does, reformat your system HDD and reinstall the OS.

Some one please, surely there must be a systematic way of troubleshooting in this other than simply reformatting?
Afterall, reformatting requires backups for which again one needs DVD writing!
Come on, surely there must be some experts and technophiles out there who know what is going on?

It's usually a good idea to develop a habit of doing regular backups. Also given how relatively cheap hard drives are these days, they are a better choice for backing up imho. I end up reformatting and reinstalling my OS at least 2 or 3 times per year. It doesn't take much to gibble up an OS. Microsoft's repair option usually doesn't solve the problem in my experience. There are so many things that could corrupt an OS, it is simply quicker to reinstall it. Again imho the easiest way is to use something like Norton Ghost to create an image of your system HDD to a backup HDD after reinstalling the OS. It is then a very quick process to reinstall the ghosted OS when needed.
The first step though is to install the drive in another system to make sure it works. If it still doesn't work installed in another system you won't waste your time trying to fix something that likely can't be fixed. If it does work in another system, you know yours is hosed and needs fixing. While there could be a hardware fault, the most likely is usually some type of software conflict. It is simply quicker in the long run to start fresh imo than to hodgepodge about looking for the conflict.
