I didn't get prompt for an update.
Even if there was an update on it it would have probably been 2.2U which would not have fixed your Wii settings brick.
Let me guess you updated your Wii with the PAL version of Mario Strikers and didn't update your Wii to the newest firmware?
Not to be mean but with all the talk on the Super Paper Mario bricks you would have thought people would learn.
But anyway at least your not in the position as PAL users are which they completely bricked their Wii when updating with the Paper Mario NTSC update without having their Wii updated with the latest firmware.
You are going to have to wait till Nintendo releases a higher firmware above 2.2U to try to fix your Settings brick.
Of course they will also need to put the higher firmware on a game disc since you can not enter your Wii settings where the update option is located.
So hopefully soon they will update the firmware of the Wii and place it on a Game Disc for you to try to unbrick the settings. Even then it might not work but I wouldn't see any reason why it wouldn't.

Try reburning the ISO. I had no problem updating with Mario Strikers. Maybe you have a bad burn.

I didn't even get prompt for an update on Mario Party 8.
Might be a media issue try different media. It took me a few to get my games to burn correctly. I tried Verbaitm and Tayio Yuden and some times they worked and sometimes they didn't. I then went to Maxell and they all work now perfect.
Use ImgBurn to burn the ISO.

All Wii's are different! My Wii is accepting TDK DVD+R's right now, and I haven't had any problems with them yet... You got to keep experimenting with Discs, until the Wii starts working will them really well! Also, when you burn the Game, try burning it at a lower speed!!!

I'm using wiikey and a usa wii. I didn't have any problems with mario party 8 at all. No update prompt and I already played an entire game with my kids. Great game! I love the mario parties.

I guess I should have mentioned that I have a WiiD installed! So ya, I use TDK DVD+R's with the WiiD chip installed! Also, I did a mod where the Gamecube Memory Card, and Wavebird are built into the Wii (so that they don't stick out)! Still trying to get the Wavebird to work though...

That was my set up before used both Nero and ImgBurn at 4x with valuline Tayio Yudens and I got some good burns but others would give me DRE allot.
I don't get any DRE anymore using the Maxell DVD's.

I know its best to use the DVD-R but what type of maxell 8x 16x does it make a differance.

I have 16x Maxell. It really depends on your Wii itself. If your Wii reads the Tayio Yuden then stick with them. I just had a few games have bad DRE and once I burnt them to maxell it fixed the problem. So now I am burning all my Games on the Maxell.

I don't think it's the .iso! I got the .iso and burned it to a TDK DVD+R, and it has been working fine for me!!!
Also, I burned the DVD with Nero 7 at 12x speed!!!
