Ipod use with USB connection

Is there a way in which using the docked usb connection the ipod don?t loose control over the playing?.

Using itunes or rockbox when the docked usb connection is used, the control over the ipod is lost. I mean that the computer takes the control over playing the music. I have also done experiments with an oppo universal player using the usb input and the control over the playing is taken by the universal player.

I want to use the ipod usb connection buy still having the possibility to play the music using just ipod. I want to plug it into a dedicated external DAC (Benchmark DAC1).
