So there are numerous guides yet many require sonix's gow tool which is now nowhere to be found. I?ve been looking around to find a way to back up this game since it?s so big. I tried following one guide that required me to download expert but an error came saying it couldn?t find my sound and the game locks at the main screen. Since I?ve now lost a DVD over it I feel I will re request this seeing as how many posts I?m finding are from 2005. So how can I backup gow? I have DVD decrypt. I have apache though I don?t know how 2 use it. And I have cdvdgen. Also unsure how to use it. I used em all for custom guitar hero ii. But now i?m stuck it seems without this gow tool or toxic patch which also can?t be found. Can someone that has successfully backed up gow and played it all the way through please help me out? Maybe dummy it down for me since my knowledge of these things is still beginning? Thanks for reading...

im in the same boat my friend. ive tried it with sonix tool and it just skipps through all the viedo and at one point it will just freez up and im still in the early parts of the game. i tryed to rebuild with expert like i did gow 2 and i get an error about a new_part2.pak. i will keep trying using pssdown and sonix gow tool and let you know what happens

im usin two differant guides to do gow. the first is for gow and i can only get to part where you have to save the ladie from fallin from a vine (very earlt in the game) befor it starts skippin and finally freeze. you can get that guide here. hope fully you will be able to get a working one that way. the other guide is for gow 2 and for some reason its no longer here.... i see the links for it but when i click the link i get sent to the forms page.... strange but oh well. i have a copy of the guide on my home pc and ill post it when i get home.

ok here is the guide for gow 2. i tip my hat to the gents who did all this hard work for us to follow.
Guide for gow 2:
Alright, here is what we got folks. Big ups to gnie, umaxxl, psychospacefish, and everyone that helped on this beast. This is umaxxl's i am just fleshing it out for more people to understand.
END RESULT IS A 3.97 GIG ISO
WHAT YOU NEED
dvd decrypter
gnie's expert 2 and GoW 2 plugin
apache 2 or 3
pss downsampler
cd dvdgen 2.0
iml2iso
zerofile.dll
ACTIVESKIN.OCX
(i have all of these programs. i just have no idea as to where and how to upload them for all to share)
And here we go
1.save the iso onto you hdd with dvd decyrpter. save it in a folder that you will remember.
2.Stick the zerofile.dll in your windows-system32 folder,and then do this: go to start then run type cmd and then press enter. copy and paste this: "regsvr32.exe /s /c ZeroFile.dll" no quotes. It will be needed later. Patch the iso with the toxic patch. Simple as opening the patcher app, selecting the iso, and hitting ok.
3.Open up apache, open the iso, extract everything to a folder on your desktop named GoW (trust me, just do it). Make sure you extract both layers.
4.With that done, go to start-run-cmd. If your comp is like me, you will need to type "cd desktop" without the quotes to get to desktop. After that, type "cd GOW" to get to that folder. Now type "copy /b part1.pak + part2.pak new-part1.pak" no quotes. This will merge the two pak files. This will take a while, leave the comp alone when it is working.
5.Open up expert2, choose the GOW2 plugin. For big file, choose new-part1.pak, and GODOFWAR.TOC for the table file. MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE TRUMPENT SOUND OR THINGS WILL GO BAD. Hit extract lba, then when that is done hit extract files.
6.Now open up pssdown. Go through the folder that contains all the extracted .pak data, and select all the .pss files, there are 43. With them all highlighted, drag them into the pssdown box. We will do this three times with the same files. If you get an error place the ACTIVESKIN.OCX into your Windows\System32\ folder.
1.Set the downsample rate at 30%
2.Set the downsample rate at 60%
3.Set the downsample rate at 50%
This is going to take sometime, so take a shot, smoke a cig, do whatever you do best. This will make the .pss files around 800 megs.
7.This is where that zerofile .dll comes in. Now go back to the same folder, and select all .psw files. They are always by its respective pss file. Highlight all 39, right click, then hit the dummy file option.
8.Now open up xpert 2 w/ the GOW2 plugin, same big and table files, and hit rebuild files. You will have a new pak file names new-new-part1.pak. When that is done, hit rebuild lba. See this isnt that bad eh?
9.Go into the GoW folder, and delete the original part1 and part2.pak files, and new-part1.pak file. With those out of the way, rename new-new-part1.pak to PART1.PAK.
10.Open wordpad, press space once, then save as PART2.PAK If the file is being recognized as a txt file, put the file in a folder, go to tools-folder options-view and uncheck the hide extensions on known files box, now you can delete the .txt extension. After you do, retick the box.
11.Delete the GODOFWAR.TOC that you originally extracted with apache, and rename NEW-GODOFWAR.TOC to GODOFWAR.TOC
12.Open up cd dvdgen, choose dvd rom master disk, and put the files in the prog in the order that was shown when you had apache open.
Now hit the volume tab, enter SCUS 97481 for the disk name, playstation for the producer name, and america for the region. With that done, go to file-export iml, name to whatever the hell you want and save to the GoW folder.
13.Open IML2ISO, open the iml you just made, and hit the make iso button. Wait a few minutes, there is your iso! If you did what I said, it will be 3.97 gigs.
14.Burn
There you go folks, what we have for GOW2. Again, big thanks to umaxxel, gnie, and the folks at alucard :)
this guide will work. i have a game save for the final level and it loaded up. so if you havein probs with this one check your media.

here is a fully working gow guide i made myself using a old gow guide and a recently missing gow 2 guide.
You will need
1)dvd decrypter
2)cddvdgen
3)apache 2
4)SONIX GOD OF WAR TOOL
5)pss downsampler
6)iml2iso
7)zerofile.dll
8)ACTIVESKIN.OCX

2.open dvd decrypter and decrypt the .iso
to your hdd.
A complete .iso of 7.97gb is what you need to
extract both layers.
3.use apache 2 to extract both layers.
The files must be placed together and fully
extracted (not in .iso form).
Extract both layers of the iso into the same folder.
You are looking for 16 files 7.97 gb
(make sure you got the PART2.PAK file from layer 1 and
place in same folder as the other files)
4.Run the GOD OF WAR TOOL click browse, select the GODOFWAR.TOC file and click the extract button.
Sit back and wait....
Once all files have been extracted you may notice that the total size of files extracted is smaller than the two large files, this is because there are many dupes inside the large files.
5.Now open up pssdown. Go through the folder that contains all the extracted .pak data, and select all the .pss files, there are 67. With them all highlighted, drag them into the pssdown box. We will do this three times with the same files. If you get an error place the ACTIVESKIN.OCX into your Windows\System32\ folder.
1.Set the downsample rate at 30%
2.Set the downsample rate at 60%
3.Set the downsample rate at 50%
This is going to take sometime....

After a while the relink screen will popup, click the 'Auto-Relink Dupes' button and that will take care of the relinking. Once all files are relinked you can close the tool.
You will now have 2 new files in the folder:
GODOFWAR.TOC_NEW
PART1.PAK_NEW
Delete the original PART1.PAK, PART2.PAK and GODOFWAR.TOC files and remove the _NEW from the new files. Delete the 'Extracted' folder.
8.OPEN CDVDGEN.
SELECT ?CREATE NEW PROJECT? AND THEN SELECT ?DVD-ROM
MASTER DISC?. DRAG CDVDGEN TO THE LEFT SIDE OF YOUR
SCREEN.
NAVIGATE TO THE FOLDER THAT YOU CREATED ON YOUR HARD
DRIVE BACK IN STEP 2 AND OPEN IT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF YOUR SCREEN.
PLACE THE FILES INTO CDVDGEN THE SAME ORDER AS THEY WERE ON THE GAME DISK AS SEEN WHEN YOU HAD THE ISO OPEN IN APCHE.
LOOK FOR A SLUS OR SLES FILE AND WRITE DOWN THE FULL NAME AND THEN CLICK ON THE ?VOLUME? TAB IN CDVDGEN.
TYPE SLUS OR SLES (WHICHEVER YOUR FILE NAME IS) INTO THE 1ST BOX NEAR "DISC NAME"
TYPE ALL OF THE NUMBERS FROM YOUR FILE NAME, WITHOUT THE PERIOD, INTO THE 2ND BOX.
TYPE PLAYSTATION FOR THE PRODUCER NAME AND SELECT THE APPROPRIATE LICENSE AREA.
With that done, go to file-export iml, name it whatever you want and save in the same folder as the extracted iso files
9.Open IML2ISO, open the iml you just made, and hit the make iso button. Wait a few minutes, there is your iso!
10.Burn your .iso
I take no credit in this as it should all go to
SONIX.
Keep up the good work.
This guide was made from a gow guide and a gow 2 guide. the end result is a fully working gow game. i have a game save for the final battle and it loads up fine. if you are havin any issues with this guide you may need to check your media.

can u please help me on the guide above by (comminup) could you tell me if you need to apply the toxic patch to the iso and if possible where to find it. also when i try to downsample the pss files it shows errors at the part 2 files. if anyone has put this on a dvd5 and uses swap magic 3.6 could you please tell me how. any help would be gratefully recieved. thanks.......zedmo212

HI COMMINUP. SORRY TO BE A PAIN IN THE A**E. COULD YOU PLEASE TELL ME HOW YOU DOWNSAMPLED THE PSS FILES ON GOD OF WAR 2. WHEN I USE PSSDOWN IT GIVES AN ERROR ON PART 2 OF THE PSS FILES AND SAYS SOMETHING LIKE (ILLEGAL AUDIO FILE). CAN U TELL ME OR ADVISE ME HOW TO FIND THE DUMMY FILES IN THIS GAME ONCE YOU HAVE USED THE EXPLOIT 2 TOOL FOR THE FIRST TIME. DO YOU NEED OTHER DUMMY FILES TO REPLACE PSS FILES. there are some .dll files that "should" come with pssdown when you dl it. im not shure what the names of them are but once i get home (cause im out of town) i will gladly see what all came with my jumbo pack of apps for gow 2 an let you know.

whatsup, i'm new to afterdwan and need some help with rebuilding god of war 2. I used apache 2 to extract the files from the iso, but i only have part1.pak, i do not see or can't find part2.pak. I continued with the guide however even though i dont have part2.pak, but the only problem i have now is with the downsampling step. I have the activeskin.ocx file in my system 32 folder, but as it gets to downsampling files that have the name part 2 something something in it(sorry i dont know the rest), i keep getting an error message from there on saying "illegal bit stream file, you are probably getting this message because your pss file is corrupt..." and this one also "input audio not found". I keep getting those error messages once it gets down to downsampling those part 2 files.
Someone please help!
Where is the part2.pak file?
Am i doing something wrong? why do i keep getting those error messages?

There always seems to be confusion with downgrading the GoW2 to fit onto a single dvd.
Maybe its just best to d/l the game.

Part2.pak is on the second layer in apache 2 goto tools>extract layer 1 iso. This will extract the second layer giving you part2.pak. You could also use apache 3 which will extract both layers at the same time no need to switch layers, much better in my opinion. If you need me to upload it let me know. I have many other GOW 1 & 2 progs and such.

Hi, guys, I have a problem with extracting second layer of GOW2. Neither apache 2 nor 3 won't extract part2.pak from second layer of GOW DVD9 iso. It starts, but then stops. What may be the problem?

Hi peeps i am finally trying to back up my god of war 2 game having followed the advice above i get up to extracting the PAK.file i have combined both paks but when i try to run the ExPERT2 prog with the god of war 2 patch it gets so far through then comes up with a error code 2201 something about unable to open godofwar.toc-lba.txt and if i use the old god of war option it just starts extracting but stops and says prog needs to close what is going on.
I did not use toxic patch as for some strange reason it kept crashing my laptop.
Please Please Please help thanxs in advance

ohh my. its been so long since ive been to this thread. im still unable to upload all the programs needed to make a working back up of gow and gow2. so if anybody has the time to instruct me as to how to get them uploaded it would be nice. also im using xepert to shrink all of my dvd5 games and they all load much faster and my ps2 runs much quiet
Biggie76 - you may need to reinstall expert there may have been a .dll or .ocx that needed to be installed other than that you shouldne get any errors
Abelus - try reinstalling apache or looking for another version
zedmo212 - u still need help buddy?
GREAT NEWS - just checked my pm's and i have info on how to upload the porgrams needed for gow and gow2 check back later for links for the dl's

im also havin trouble backing up god of war..theres so many threads about it but people still say it doesnt work properly..? im gettin confused..>.<
basically i have 3 files Godofwar.100 Godofwar.101 and Godofwar.MDS
now wot do i do with these files? and does anyone kno where to get the GOW sonix tool from? is that wot i need?
do i need to do the rebuilding or can i jus burn that with alco120%/nero?

Biggie76 - if you want just hang back till i get the programs uploaded and go from there. there may be somin wrong with the programs you have im not sure but maybe the ones that i used will work for you.
sasuke99 - just hang back till i get the programs uploaded. then follow each step in the tut. dont skip ahead or not do a step. this tut will make a working back-up of gow and gow2 if you follow each step correctly and in order.

Ok, I solved my problem. It was because the image was divided into 2 parts. After I recreated the image in one file, the second layer has been extracted successfuly.
