i heard that you can refresh the TOC & get it to work that way.
it is done by inserting swap magic, pressing eject, placing in an original ps2 game that has a lot of gigs (4.37gb), then use the slide tool & put in the backup.
they say that it should load, but it never worked for me. i'm trying to rebuild it now with isobuster & nero. if it works, i'll post instructions on how to do it.

yes, it worked! i learned this method from Viperino in blackcats. you'll need 3 programs. dvd decrypter, isobuster, and nero.
ok. here goes.
step 1
make a new folder on the desktop, and use dvd decrypter to make an iso image.....MODE>ISO>READ,.....put the image in the folder,if you are comfortable in finding the image on the hardrive, then dont make a folder on desktop.....its just easier this way.
step 2
make another folder on desktop, name it whatever the game is called.ie dead to rights 2
step 3
open up iso buster and browse for the iso image you just made,
open it.....you should see a long list of files on the right hand side(that is the breakdown of the iso image)....i.e lots of folders etc etc.
now we need both iso buster open and the empty second folder open on the pc screen,...so you should have in front of you,iso buster with a list of folders and the empty second folder
step 4
now from the list of folders in iso buster, drag and drop them one by one over to the new folder,in the same order they are listed,so start at the top and work your way down to the bottom, this may take some time,as iso buster will extract the files over.
NOW YOU CAN CLOSE ISOBUSTER,ITS NO LONGER NEEDED
now this new folder contains the rebuilt game you have just made with iso buster,.....check the size!!!!...it should be much smaller than the one you started with
step 5
now we have to burn it......
open up nero, and select NERO BURNING ROM
you will see a window pop up with the title new compilation...on the left hand side, there is a list of options, dvd rom,dvd copy etc.....we want the bottom one DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO).click it..then click NEW,(top right)
step 6
you will now see a new window with 4 columns,
now find the folder which stores the game.i.e dead to rights 2,and open it up.
you should see a list of folders again, like before
step 7
in nero, the first column on the left, titled "new"..this is where we want to place the game folders
so drag and drop them over, one by one, starting from the top working your way down...so now you will see a few folders in the first column, but also so a few in the second column, dont worry about that, its just the breakdown of the folders content
donr worry if they appear to be listed in a different order,to which you dropped them in,.they will burn in the order in which you put them, although i dont think it matters what order they are placed
step 8
now we have all the folders ready to burn...(the blue bar at the bottom should read as the same size as the second folder which contains the rebuilt game.i.e 1.5 GB,if it is in the red,it means you have not selected DVD in the opening page of nero)
in nero there is an emblem with a dvd/matchstick figure, click it.
it may give you the message,"error, you about to burn a multi session disc",if this happens,un-check the multi session box
step 9
make sure the settings for your usual burning preferences are set.i.e speed, turn off internet etc.......and off you go,burn the sucker

i used taiyo yuden dvd-r. they're the best for ps2, but you can only buy them online. the next best thing would be verbatim dvd-r. also, i burned it at 4x speed.
nero burns at either 8x or max by default. also, make sure you place the files in exact order too. i think it matters in what order you put them in.
for ps2 backups, use dvd-r, and use good media like i mentioned above. i hope my advice helps.

your welcome. but i strongly recommend taiyo yuden. theyre pretty cheap too. you can get 200 of them for about the same price you would pay at a store for 50.
regardless on the brand that you pick, try sticking with dvd-r. it's easier on the ps2 laser lens. dvd+r kinda strains the laser. buy a small pack of dvd-r's & you'll see what i mean.

OK Fellas, First things first!
1. You know you need all the information from the game to create your iso file. But in this case we are not. When u first insert your game u know how all your files are shown. You have to be very abservant. Look for a BOOT.phb or something file. Make sure it say BOOT. It is the only file of that kind out of all the files on the game. The key is to remove this file, it is blockin us from backing up the game. Make a new folder on your hardive. Name it NBA LIVE 08. Then drag the files from the game to the new folder you have created leaving out the BOOT file that we DO NOT WANT!
2. Open up Image Burn or DVD Decrypter. Select your (Build) option. In order to create your own iso file. Then select your destination for the iso file to be stored on your hard drive. When finished click begin!
3. After your file has been created you select (WRITE) in order to write our own new iso file without that crappy BOOT file to keep us from doing our thing!HA I use dvd-r Sony Accucore for my games they are the best!
4. When your dvd-r is finished burning! Your set bro. Thats it.
I BETCHA CANT DO IT LIKE ME YO! HAHAHA

if it's already an iso file, you'll need isobuster to extract all of the files. you should be able to see the BOOT.PAD file & remove it.
i wasn't sure if you're supposed to remove it or replace it.
i think i'll try it slimthuga's way cause maybe it'll load faster, since removing the BOOT.PAD file will take almost 2GB off the game size.

i'm not sure what you guys are doing wrong, cause it worked for me. i didn't remove anything from the game. the original size was 4.37gb, but after i burned it doing the steps that i posted, it was reduced to 4.33gb. a small reduction, but enough to get it to work.
i've heard that boot discs have problems loading games that are 4.37gb. there's an option in swap magic that lets you refresh the TOC size. you do this by loading swap magic, pressing eject, inserting an original ps2 game (DEVIL MAY CRY) that has a high TOC, then removing the original game w/o pressing eject, then insert the backup.
but i can never get that method to work for me. now as far as repatching the BOOT.PAD file, i heard that you can create a notepad doc & renaming it BOOT.PAD, then use the notepad doc instead of the original BOOT.PAD, but i'm not sure how big you're suppost to make the notepad doc.

i got nero 7, & i'm sorry, i only know how to dnload torrents, not upload them.
besides, i don't think we're allowed to talk about that in an open thread. you must pm questions like that. i believe that nero 6 has the udf/iso option.
when you get to the new compilation screen, it gives you afew options. DVD-ROM (ISO), DVD Copy, DVD Video,DVD-ROM (BOOT), DVD-ROM (UDF), & FINALLY, DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO). they're right above the nero express button, it's on the left. make sure you select without multisession when it asks you.

okay ty cumstain i used another program i had roxio cd/dvd creator
and magic iso
used dvd decrypter to rip iso to hdd from the original nba live 08 disc
used magic iso to extract nba live 08 iso files to new folder, (n yes cumstain u were right the iso file did shrink when i extracted files into new folder 4.33gb) then used roxio easy cd/dvd creator to burn the nba iso files to memorex 16x dvd-r
so now i know when games r ova 4.3gb or higher to rip iso then extract iso files to a new folder to make the video game iso smaller
my son is so happy ty again cumstain it works works works playin now

You must remove the BOOT file from NBA live 2008 for it to work with swap magic 3.6
Usually when u burn a game and us swap magic and it says invalid disk is because its not an iso file that u have burned.
You must always have an iso file. Most people think they can just drag the files from the game to their hard drive and burn that way but it wont work. Trust me! It will say invalid disk!
OK again . First u drag the files from the game to a new folder on your hardrive. Name it NBA live 2008.REMOVE THAT DUMB BOOT FILE from your NBA live folder that u have made after your information from the game has been sent to your NBA LIVE 2008 folder. Open Image Burn and Build a new iso image.Select your folder NBA LIVE 2008. You must select the (Build) option. Its under (Mode). After your image finishes building put in a dvd-r and under the mode option select (WRITE). I suggest u write at the lowest speed 1x. Then ur done. If u follow my instructions it will work. I hope i have helped answer your questions. Let me know if u have trouble.
