so i bought linux fadora core 5 the whole pack from ebay and i install it and it comes up with ful;l intstall and minimum install i think. first i tried full install and waited2 hours and at the end it asks insert add on disc, i insert it and type 'y' and it starts cancelling.
so i try the whole thing again but with the minimum install it works i finish installing and type my user as 'root' and my password it comes up with [root@localhost~]# i type 'startx' and it says '-bash: startx: command not found'
You're in the wrong category, there is a dedicated section for PS3 linux, see the sticky at the top of this section.
startx isn't strictly needed for a window manager to run. You could try something along the lines of "/etc/rc.d/gdm start" to get gnome to start for instance, if it installed gnome.
god only knows... the forums are full of people having huge troubles with fed5 on ps3's. Most sensible sounding thing I found was to install yellowdog (supported) and then upgrade to something modern. I can't see why people with no idea about linux would want to install it on a console in the first place. Surely it makes more sense to experiment with a dumpster comp and learn the basics..
Oh fedora5 will be running kde by default from install, so startx should start it if it's actually installed, or throw a "no terminals found 0:0" error... reading back.. often it won't start a gui as root.. try a normal user account instead??? It should have made one during the install.
