computer won't recognixe ipod anymore

a few weeks ago i turned my computer off with the ipod connected to it, and the "do not disconnect" screen was on the screen of the ipod. i accidentally hit the off button on the surge protector, so the computer didn't shut down properly, it was just turned off during a file transfer between my ipod and the computer. now my ipod isn't recognized by my computer anymore and itunes software doesn't open up like it usually does. the ipod screen displays the message, you may now disconnect the ipod, or something along those lines to that affect. i can not transfer songs to my ipod at all, and itunes software doesnt even recognize my ipod. is there a way to bypass itunes (since i hate that program anyways) and be able to get my ipod to work properly again? thanks for any help.
