When you hit stop in the middle of a recording, the display will start flashing "PLAY". You can then hit play again and it will resume play where you were. Hitting stop a second time will drop it out of that mode. I think you can shut the machine off when "PLAY" is flashing and it will still remember where you were. However, someone thought that flashing "PLAY" mode was interfering with TVGO download.
Beyond that, I'm not aware of a way to mark a spot in a recording. I usually hit the [STATUS] button on the remote twice to display the time in the show, jot it down, then later fast forward at 100X to where I left off.

I would like to remove the hard drive from my DRM-E85H, re-format and then reinstall... Can someone please tell me how to do this. I have removed the HD and instaled it in an external USB HD case... the computer can read the drive.
What process do I use to format... I am guessing not the normal windows format.
Thanks

why don`t you use the format option on disk management in the menus.. If you format it in a windows system you will still have to reformat the drive under panasonic disk management in the menu because during a panasonic format info is written to the drive so that the controller on the digital board knows what it`s dealing with. Its just as stupid as a windows system only moore so!!!

You can go to the exact spot of your recording by using the TimeSlip display. Once you hit this button on the remote, the upper right part of the screen will have a yellow box with "0 min" in it. Use the up/down arrow keys to enter the number of minutes you want to go forward or backwards, then hit enter. Then hit the TimeSlip button again to close that window.

When the TV Guide Onscreen says 'The Search for Data has Failed', does this mean it has stopped looking and you need to start over by clearing the setup and starting over. Also, could someone tell me how you get to the hidden screens for the TV Guide Onscreen that has all sorts of various data?

No-- it means that the DVR has not found the channel from which it gets the TV Guide. Give it 24 hours.
To get to those screens you were asking about, the best thing is to read The Great Panasonic Snafu-- Google it and follow his worthwhile suggestions.

Thanks, Cal. ;)
I've been tied up for a while with multiple distractions, but look back occasionally. Then again, when I have a problem, I come back to read my own posts--and anything new.
This is one of those times. After a month or two of distractions keeping me from unloading my drive, I started to save the 175-or-so files that were filling the hard disk on my E95. It had less than 20 hrs left--a sure signpost for trouble. I should have done a power down/reset before starting, but I got lazy--and paid dearly for it.
During an early dub, it powered down and started a U99 loop, opening the drive (I couldn't get it to close for a while--now I can't get it to open, even using the [Power]/[Stop]/[Ch Up] trick).
The [Up]/Down] power down didn't work, nor did either the Power Switch reset or the Factory reset [|<<]/[Timeslip]/[Open/Close].
Finally, in desperation, I just pulled the plug while it was testing. After waiting a couple of minutes and turning it on again, I was able to force a factory reset, but it now suffers the test*L1 loop.
So far, I have been unable to get it to power down during the loop using the [v][^] reset, but just got it to do so using the "Hold the Power Switch 5 Seconds" method. I am now going to diddle around for a while and try to get my recordings back. I have the last 4-8 shows of a dozen series on the HDD and I do *not* want to lose them.
I've seen a procedure on one of the threads on this list for swapping drives that didn't cause a reformat--by breaking and eventually re-connecting the "write" line on the drive cable--but I have not seen any real confirmation that this worked, so I'm saving it for a last-ditch effort.
Nor have I found anyone who has found software to read the drives off-unit (it would probably be a *nix program). I may have to write one myself.
Any input on any of those would be greatly appreciated.
Meanwhile, Back to the experimental lab....:{

Sure,
If you are not recording or dubbing, simply hit the green [Chapter] button on the remote. It will set a "Divide Chapter" mark at that position and tell you. Hit [Enter], or [Return], or just wait and it will go away. You can then jump back and forth using the Skip [|<<]/[>>|] buttons. It's a great way to mark the commercials for later deletion as you watch a recording. It also marks your place when you stop between recordings or dubbings--or just quit for the night.

Odd you should mention that. I've been using that chapter button a few times unintentionally, but Ill see if I can get to the mark point too.
thanks.

A few weeks ago, unaware that there was a recordable DVD in the drive, I did a reset, and since then my E85 refuses to download the TVGOS, and just roams the channels. I did a factory reset, but it did not help.
Have I lost the TVGOS forever? The machine works fine in all other respects.
I am in NYC, with Time Warner digital cable.
Thanks

I am trying to find a hidden sceen for the TV Guide Onscreen. This isn't a part of Service Mode. It's a screen you see on your television that has a bunch of arcane information for the most part but some of it has to do with the channel it is receiving guide information from. I don't think 'The Great Panasonic Snafu' page has any info on it. I'm pretty sure I found out about it on this forum, but I'm not yet hard up enough to wade through all these pages of information to find it. There are too many.

I am also having the same kind of problem as Faure. I was getting the Guide data, but since I was switching back and forth between recording from my digital cable box and then from basic cable without the box, I would go in and change the Guide onscreen settings and every time I did this it would stop getting data. I fixed it once, but I don't know how I did it and haven't gotten Guide info in weeks.

Here is the information. (I don't recall who posted it):
Quote: Go to your 'Guide' screen and across to the 'Messages' (in the top bar). When you are there, press ENTER. You will then see ID: <bunch o' numbers>. With this ID data displayed, using your remote key in: 7 5 3 1 5 9 8 5 2. (This may seem like a random string of numbers but if you observe the pattern on the keypad you'll find it's actually quite easy to remember.)
That brings up "page 1", which shows your Host ID, Host Channel, Next DL, and a whole array of other tidbits. It is there that I have been observing my "host ID" hunt around until it settles on PBS (channel 10 - or "A" in hex). Oh, yes - and your firmware info. is also lurking up at the top of this screen (I believe).
This is also where I now take my clue that it is time to do a 'soft reset' -- i.e., when my machine has 'lost its mind' and the Host ID reads OxO and the Next DL reads N/A, I do Bob's soft reset procedure BEFORE I lose stable operation.

Try a power down and unplug for 30 seconds, using the instructions below. Try changing your ZIP code to that of your local PBS station or your cable provider.
After about 12 hours of letting the machine sit in normal power down, ready to record state, check the TVGO host channel listed in the 753159852 screen page one. (See previous post on how to access the screens.) Host channel should be something other than 0x0 and will probably be one of the local network stations. Also note the next download time. You will probably have to go through the confirm channel lineup before the next download time will show up (not sure).
I believe that VideoBob posted this:
Quote: ... There are many causes for problems and several solutions for various symptoms, but the ONE single procedure that is ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY for full completion of ANY reset is the removal of AC power from the unit for at least 30 seconds.
Until power is removed long enough to allow the power supply capacitors to bleed down, unstable circuit conditions may remain latched into the logic circuits. Removing AC power appears to fix this--until the next crash.
Also, any failure with DVDs or any mass-deletion of files should also be accompanied with AC removal. A soft reset (holding power switch down until Stand-by light goes out) before doing so will allow you to maintain your volatile settings (Personal information, listings, and schedule). Leaving the DVD empty except when you are using it minimizes crashes. Do *NOT* leave a DVD in when you are about to do any reset or other maintenance--that is asking for trouble.
The AC-removal appears to defrag the Drive TABLE OF CONTENTS, which appears to get all messed up when the drive gets full and/or when a lot of files are deleted. I know that after dubbing off a couple of dozen programs and then deleting them, if I power-cycle, all is well. If I don't, both my E85 and E95 crash within a day or two ("An error has occurred").

I am in Manhattan, NY. With a digital cable system zip codes seem irrelevant. I get everything through the cable, not off the air.
I have tried all the various resetting rituals described in the numerous messages here-- no luck.
I have no way of knowing whether Time Warner, my cable provider, is blocking the TVGOS information, in order to push their own PVR sales.
It would be great if I could find out that others in Manhattan are able to get the TVGOS, but I have failed in previous efforts to find that out.

You zip code is how TVGO figures out what channel lineup to use. Others have had luck resolving TVGO problems by changing their ZIP, as suggested. After a "power down and unplug" reset, watch your 753159852 screen 1. If the Host channel always stays at 0x0, there probably is no TVGO data to receive. That appears to have happened here. I checked with the local PBS station and they are sending the TVGO feed to Cox cable, but it apparently is not making it through to me.

I went through the "can't find listings anymore" scenario with Comcast in Maryland several months ago. It turned out that there was a backdoor mechanism provided by the Cable company when they went to an all digital signal -- TVGOS can only load from an analog signal.
What Comcast did was to add a duplicate of the local PBS station in analog on an unused channel. It wasn't documented or included in any listings. I had to get the instructions from TV Guide support (CE_Customer_Support@tvguide.com), but the answer was to wait until a scan was able to find a lineup, then add the analog PBS (channel 94) to my lineup manually.
That did the trick - but it has to be redone after any reset.
Of course this won't work if the cable company is not cooperative like Comcast was. They may be trying to steer customers to use their proprietary DVR service or something like that.

Just an update for those who read my post. I did receive the Firmware Update CD from Panasonic which was supposed to STOP my machine from going into self-check almost every time a DVD (x16) was inserted.
After installing the software, the first disc was fine but then the "self-checks", "unable to read disc" continued. Then finally after inserting yet another disc, my entire TV Guide and list of scheduled recordings disappeared.
At that point I called Panasonic and they told me that I could take it in to repair under my extended warranty. (I had bought this because the circuit board had gone out 4 months after I got he E85.)
Anyway, it is less than a week since I took it in but I am anxious to hear the diagnosis!

How long have you had your E85?
Did you experience the problem only with the 16x discs?
We've been using thousands of 8 and 16x discs (Fuji) in our 5 E-85's for the last 3 years with no trouble at all.

Oops, meant to say E95. I have had it a little over 2 years. Problem started about 6 months ago with the "self- check" happening off and on. It just got progressively worse. I am starting to think it all began when I used TDK 16X DVDs made in India. Now the 16X TDK DVds made in Taiwan give me the "cannot read disc" message. It is fine if I use TDK 8x DVDs.
The funny thing is that TDK seemed to be the most compatible brand of DVDs when I first got the E95. Used them with no problems for 1 1/2 years. Just waiting to hear from the repairman.

Skatter21,
Thanks for the tip. Cox cable here has both analog and digital service on the same cable. We have the analog service.
The PBS broadcast engineer thought that Cox might be taking their digital feed and converting it to analog for the analog customers, rather than using the PBS analog feed. So far Cox has now replied back to me.
soju,
I've just finished a spindle of about 100 TDK 16x DVD-R's. No problems. I have an E85. The label on the DVDs says Taiwan, nothing on the DVDs themselves to indicate where they were made.

Cal,
Thanks-- I suspect that Time Warner is preventing us from getting the TVGOS, to sell their own PVR service. The Host Channel is, indeed, always 0x0. I had changed the zip code to another in Northern Manhattan, but it did not help.
The only reason I think that, perhaps, something else might be going on, is that I lost the TVGOS just after I did a reset with a recordable disk in the drive. But all my subsequent resets should have brought me back to square one, I would have thought...
It is frustrating to have so much trouble with a machine that is, basically, a very nice device.

I have been watching the Onscreen Guide search for the host channel. The VBI Channel always seemed to be on channel 12 which is our PBS channel or 24 which is CSPAN 2. But now it says 0xC. Any idea what that means?

That's hexidecimal notation for the number 12.
